Apple had a record-breaking fiscal first quarter of 2012 (which for them is from the end of September to the end of December). The company generated $46.3 billion in revenue in the 1Q 2012 and a quarterly profit of $13.06 billion. Apple also sold 37.04 million iPhones (up more than 128% over the same quarter a year ago); 15.43 million iPads (+111% over the same time period last year); and 5.2 million Macs (+26%). In fact, the iPod was the only product to see a drop (-21%) even though Apple sold 15.4 million of them. To give you an idea of how good of a quarter it was for the company, analysts were predicting Apple’s quarterly revenue to be $38.8 billion, with iPhone shipments of nearly 30 million and iPad sales of around 14 million, according to AllThingsD. In a statement, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the 1Q figures are record-breaking sales numbers for iPhones, iPads and Macs. During the company’s conference call, Apple also announced that by the end of January, iOS developers will have made over $4 billion in total sales.
Through a distribution partnership with New Video, Digital Broadcasting Group has released the Kiefer Sutherland-starring action/drama web series The Confession on DVD, subscription VOD services and numerous digital platforms including Netflix, Amazon and iTunes. The series, which premiered in March 2011, centers on a hitman (played by Sutherland) looking for redemption from a priest (played by John Hurt). It featured 10 six- to eight-minute long episodes during its six-month run. This multiplatform release will include 38 minutes of additional content, including three new webisodes focused on character back stories, as well as six new behind-the-scenes segments.
Futuresource Consulting, a research and knowledge-based consulting firm, and Intellect, a U.K.-based trade association for the country’s tech industry, have announced the Future of Entertainment Summit, scheduled to take place this year on June 20 in London. The event will be geared toward bringing together industry leaders, policymakers and entrepreneurs to discuss opinions and strategy on the roles device manufacturers, content creators, tech companies, broadcasters and infrastructure owners play in the entertainment industry.
In a blog post, Facebook has announced that it will start converting all users’ profiles to the new Timeline feature “over the next few weeks.” Up until now, users had the choice of opting-in to the new interface. As has been the case for early adopters, when users get the Timeline feature, they will have seven days to preview the interface, as well as remove or hide any information they don’t want appearing on it.
Legendary boxer Sugar Ray Leonard’s new personal website, which launched yesterday, will feature footage of some of his most memorable fights, available in their full form. Leonard will also provide his personal commentary on the fights by breaking down the footage, the rights of which he owns. Other content to be offered on the site will include individual interviews Leonard conducted with several boxing greats, including Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield. The site is powered by EQAL media networks.
Social TV analytics start-up Bluefin Labs has raised $12 million in a Series B round of funding led by Time Warner Investments with additional funds from new investor SoftBank Capital and existing investors Redpoint Ventures and Lerer Ventures. The company’s flagship product, Bluefin Signals, analyzes and organizes social media conversations about what viewers are watching on television in the U.S. It enables clients to use Bluefin’s data about TV shows and commercials in order to inform TV media buying and selling. Bluefin’s client list includes CBS, FOX, Discovery Communications, MediaCom, MTV and more. The start-up says the new funds will be directed toward accelerating growth of Bluefin Labs’ sales and client services efforts, as well as continued investment in technology and research and development.
Venture capital investments in mobile increased from $4.5 billion in 2010 to $6.3 billion in 2011, finds the Venture Capital in Mobile report from research investment bank Ruberg & Co. In fact, the percentage of overall investments in technology that is directed toward mobile jumped from 30.4% in 2010 to 42.4% in 2011. “If there’s a billion dollar market or multi-hundred million dollar business, you can be sure that there are entrepreneurs who are trying to rethink the way that market or business works through mobile,” said Rajeev Chand, managing director and head of research, Ruberg & Co., San Francisco, to Mobile Marketer. Another significant increase was in the category of VC investment in mobile marketing and advertising, which jumped from $128 million in 2010 to $592 million in 2011. In the last 10 years, 2006 still remains as the best for VC investment in mobile as it witnessed $6.4 billion in funding.
With the Super Bowl less than two weeks away, Hulu has launched Hulu AdZone 2012. The AdZone offers viewers access to Super Bowl ads from years past (some going back as early as 1973), as well as the chance to preview some ads that will be running during this year’s game. The hub already contains over 250 advertisements, with that number to go up as Hulu posts new preview/leaked ads leading up to the game. On the night of the showdown between the Patriots and Giants, fans will have the opportunity to view ads as they air via an embeddable widget, vote for their favorites and share them across all social media channels. The AdZone will also include a live leaderboard that tracks voting results in real-time. The winner will be announced on the morning after the game (Monday, Feb. 6). Until then, Hulu’s editorial team is offering their picks for top ads (2008-2011), along with other memorable ones divided by several categories, such as Big Laughs, Babies and Animals, Over the Top Moments and Made by Fans.
The USA TODAY Sports Media Group has purchased Fantasy Sports Ventures (FSV), a web sports network and owner of The Big Lead sports site, for an undisclosed sum. Prior to the acquisition, USA TODAY’s parent company, Gannett, was a minority shareholder of FSV, and chose to complete the acquisition through the purchase of FSV’s assets. FSV attracts nearly 19 million unique visitors per month among its web properties; the addition of which Gannett says will propel its network to the top 5 in terms of sports sites on the web. Digital properties include TheBigLead.com, Baseball-Reference.com, KFFL.com, HoopsWorld.com and more. On the fantasy sports side, FSV and The Big Lead possess more than 25 fantasy games and products, boasting more than 500,000 active and paying subscribers.
Meredith Corporation has acquired AllRecipes.com for $175 million from The Reader’s Digest Association. “It more than doubles the scale of the Meredith Women’s Digital Network, and is expected to drive incremental revenue and profit growth,” said Meredith chairman and CEO Steve Lacy of the acquisition. The agreement aligns with Meredith’s criteria for new acquisitions, specifically the purchased property being a national media brand that provides access to new audiences and advertising opportunities. Expected to close later this quarter, Meredith says the deal enables it to offer advertisers access to more than 100 million American women; nearly doubles annual digital revenues for the Meredith Women’s Network; and introduces the Meredith brand to new audiences, as AllRecipes.com has 17 websites in 22 countries.
A Nielsen case study researching local offerings from Fisher Communications’ Seattle-based KOMO TV station and Portland-based KATU-TV found that local station websites may contribute added reach to both early and late news broadcasts. In fact, according to the study, KOMO earned an incremental reach, or unduplicated audience, of 2.9% from their website for people aged 18 or over, which amounts to 10% of the total combined reach generated by the website and the newscast for the station’s late night news during the week. The website plays an even bigger role within the 18-34 demographic, pulling in a 3.9% incremental reach, which is 23% of the total combined reach. KATU-TV’s numbers are similar: its website adds 2.8% incremental reach to the 28.1% reach of the late news. The study also took a look at gender demographics for KOMOs newscasts and website. While more females watch KOMO’s news telecasts (ranging from 64% to 71%), the website breakdown was more equal (male viewers: 53%, females: 47%).
Boxee has released the Boxee Live TV. The gadget, which is now available for $49.99, connects to a Boxee set-top box and delivers over-the-air television to the user’s TV. The tuner also offers social TV integration as users can manually share information with friends on Facebook, Twitter or Tumblr; or automatically via Boxee’s new app for Facebook Timeline. The tuner does not support DVR functionality; however, Boxee says it is examining if it could provide such a capability. The company has also rolled out a software update, the Boxee v1.5, which includes a new user interface, improved search, Rotten Tomatoes integration and more.
The Academy of Country Music (ACM) will hold a digital press conference on Thursday, Jan. 26, to announce the nominees for the 47th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards. It will be hosted on ACM’s Facebook and Twitter pages and will begin at 9:30 am ET. The nominations will be announced via custom videos (featuring surprise guests) posted on the aforementioned social media pages in real-time. Taking advantage of the digital and social platforms, ACM will also incorporate user-generated content into the digital presser. Fans can visit the ACM YouTube Channel and learn about how they can submit videos of them announcing the name of the artist(s) they would like to see receive an Entertainer of the Year nomination. When that category is announced during the presser on Thursday, their submission might be used to announce their pick for that award.
