Good Morning, it’s Wednesday, January 24, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
Recent reports indicate Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. has joined the Tribune bidding process, teaming with Tribune Co. shareholder, the Chandler family. The Chandler main interest is in the newspaper properties owned by Tribune, of which there are 11, including the Long Island paper Newsday, a competitor to Murdoch’s New York based The Post, and a publication Murdoch is reportedly most interested in gaining a stake. In this bid, Tribune Co. would sell off its 23 local broadcast station holdings. Tribune met over the weekend to review the three bids before it – the Chandler bid, private equity firm The Carlyle Group, and two LA-based billionaires Eli Broad and Ronald W. Burkle. Initially Tribune was most interested in selling as a single unit, tho each of the bids are more interested in specific parts.
Tonight’s Premiere:
ABC: George Lopez at 8p
The Greg Behrendt Show will not be renewed for a second season. The Sony Pictures Television series will finish out the season. According to TV Week, the show’s major launch group, Tribune, chose not to renew for Season #2, and instead opted for NBC Universal’s new daytimer with Jerry Springer bodyguard Steve Wilkos. This is the third syndicated freshman show that has officially been passed on for year two – the other two were The Megan Mullally Show and Geraldo at Large.
VERSUS will broadcast the first season of World Combat League (WCL), the first-ever martial arts team league founded by Chuck Norris last year. The first episode premieres Thursday at 11p, and, in total, VERSUS will air around 27 hours of WCL coverage in primetime in 2007.
MTV has greenlit season two of its series Rob and Big for air on both MTV and MTV2 starting this second quarter. The eight new episodes will follow the daily lives of professional DC Shoes skateboarder, Rob Dyrdek and his bodyguard and best friend, Christopher “Big Black” Boykin in and around their Hollywood Hills home.
Also at MTV, the network and Verizon Wireless announced a new event series titled MTV Live which will feature live artist performances. The monthly series will be recorded in front of a live audience at the Hard Rock Cafe NY in Times Square and will be presented across the MTV platforms, including MTV Mobile on V CAST. The first episode will premiere on February 6 at 1130p with a commercial-free performance by Fall Out Boy The series will be specifically customized for each screen with a live interactive text-to-screen element, video footage, and more.
Oxygen is first out of the gate by announcing a slew of new programming in development, and two returning series – Mo’Nique’s F.A.T. Chance for a third season; Fight Girls returns in June:
Reality Pilots include:
- Rodeo Girls – half-hour, docu-soap focusing on a group of rodeo girls who love to ride the bulls. From Mess Media and Go-Go Lucky Productions.
- TBD Magical Elves Project – half-hour, reality/comedy series about five blondes (both male and female) who take on failing businesses to make them more profitable. From Magical Elves Production.
- Viva Hollywood – half-hour series featuring Latino actors and actresses who dream of making it big in Hollywood. From World of Wonder and Latin World Entertainment.
- Adfight – one-hour competition series where ten teams of advertising agency professionals, students and amateurs learn how to market to women with the winner producing a real ad campaign for a Fortune 500 company. From Ben Silverman’s Reveille production company.
- Smoke & Mirrors – half-hour, docu-soap about female firefighters in the FDNY. Produced by Hybrid.
- Homefield Advantage – half-hour, docu-soap centers on Pilar Sanders, wife of NFL player Deion Sanders, as she raises five kids in small town Texas. From Sokolobl Entertainment.
- Prankster – one-hour competition series, showing amateur comics taking on various challenges to become the ultimate prankster. Produced by Endemol Entertainment.
- Ultimate Bodyguard – half-hour, docu-soap about Kim Maree Penn, female bodyguard for wealthy clients and dangerous situations. Produced by New Wave Entertainment.
Scripted Series include:
- Graphic City Limits – one-hour, drama about a woman who, without her knowledge, leads multiple lives. Produced by Rob Tapert of Xena-Warrior Princess fame.
- Angry Little Girls – half-hour, animated series centers on a group of bitter little girls, based on the novel by Lela Lee. Created by Lela Lee and Jennifer Love Hewitt.
- Identical – half-hour, dramedy series highlighting the lives of two different twin sisters. Produced by Tim Perrel.
- Exes – one-hour, drama chronicles the lives of two divorcees as they work to get along and keep their successful wedding planning business alive. Written and produced by Tommy Lynch.
New Online Initiatives:
- Oomph.net – an online social network for women to connect with each other with similar interests.
- SheDidWhat.tv – Oxygen’s first broadband network that launches this month featuring ad-supported programming content, web exclusives and an original web series titled Our Bodies, Myself.
Three new lifestyle video series are now available for free and on demand from AOL and Time Warner Global Media Group, in partnership with GMC. The programs include Cooking with Tyler Florence, Home Entertaining with Michele and Gia and Home Improvement with Eric Stromer, and all can be found on AOL’s Living Channel at http://living.aol.com. Each of the 78 original 3-5 minute video episodes will include additional portable elements, step-by-step photos, audio podcasts, printable instructions and send-to-phone features. Each series will also integrate a GMC vehicle in the action, and the company will have TV commercials shown as pre-roll during half of the shows’ streams in addition to GMC banner ads on the program’s homepages.
Judson Laipply, the motivational speaker who created the popular online video Evolution of Dance, has created a new media company called Let’s Dance Media Inc. One of the first projects for the new company is the launch of an interactive broadband TV network called LiveLoud.TV happening today, which will contain several lifestyle channels and community elements where users can build profiles, upload video and audio and participate in blogs and more.
Starz Entertainment and Starz Media, under a new multi-year content licensing and distribution agreement, will supply Starz Media movies and video titles for Vongo, the company’s broadband video download vehicle. Vongo will receive more than 250 titles for VOD rental and its future electronic sell-through (EST) feature. Some of the titles include thirteen movies from season one of Masters of Horror series, The Evil Dead, plus the animated Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll and more than 50 episodes of Astro Boy among other titles.
ABC has ordered up five – count them, five! – half-hour pilots:
- Sam I Am from Touchstone Television is about a woman who awakens from a coma with amnesia and has to re-learn her life. And what she learns is she wasn’t a very nice person.
- The Middle focuses on a blue collar mid-west family, as seen thru the eyes of the mother, from Warner Bros. TV
- The Call is a comedy from 20th Century Fox TV about a group of talented yet off-beat paramedics – this project will be shot in real time
- Carpoolers is, you guessed it, about a group of carpoolers who travel to work together on a daily basis. This project is from Touchstone.
- Family of the Year about a perfect family voted Family of the Year, who begins to come unglued when another family looks like they may be pitching the same title. Project is from 20th Century Fox TV.
Fox has ordered up another pilot – Deeply Irresponsible (wt) is a 30m format about a fairly rigid family who is thrown into bedlam when grandpa comes to live with them. Project is from 20th Century Fox TV.
Also at Fox, casting has begun on the pilot project The Life and Times of Tim – the animated comedy will star Cheri Oteri, Kurtwood Smith and Matt Johnson.
Scripps Networks Interactive has upped Ron Feinbaum to EVP/Business Development to spotlight new business and acquisition opportunities that fit the Scripps Networks brands including HGTV, Food Network, DIY Network, FINE LIVING TV Network and Great American Country.
Suzanne Dunn has joined Concrete Pictures as VP/Interactive Business Development in the company’s Santa Monica office. She will be charged with heading development opportunities for content distribution involving broadband, wireless and interactive TV platforms.
CBS Interactive has appointed Stephen E. Snyder as COO for the new division, reporting to Quincy Smith, President, CBS Interactive. Stephen will supervise all operations of the division’s web sites that include cbs.com, CBSNews.com, CBS SportsLine.com among others.
Eclipse Marketing Services, Inc. has made several new staffing appointments:
- Roberta Rivinius has been elevated to VP/National Accounts where she will continue to work with the company’s key clients to create customized solutions;
- Chad Apgar has been bumped to Director/National Accounts where he develops marketing programs for the company’s clients;
- and Lisa Gage has been hired as a Marketing Account Manager to organize all facets of her client’s projects.
BET Networks named Scott Mills as President of the newly created Digital Media Group. He will continue in his role as BET Networks’ CFO in addition to his new responsibilities managing digital brands and digital strategy development and implementation. These cover BET’s current digital assets including BET.com, BET on Blast, BET on Demand, BET Mobile and a digital VOD service.
Sony Pictures Television has announced three key promotions in its advertising sales division based in New York City:
- James Petretti is the new SVP/Sales and Marketing Research to manage research for the company’s syndication, tens, high-definition and digital ad sales businesses;
- Travis Howe has been made SVP/Digital Advertiser Sales to develop and manage the mechanics that supports the sale of digital inventory across all of the company’s brands;
- and Mark Donohue has been promoted to VP/Digital Advertiser Sales to create advertiser relationships with Sony digital properties.
ABC Family has named Laura Kuhn as VP/Sales Marketing and Promotions to spearhead all sales marketing activities for the network and its developing digital properties. In addition, Danielle Hughes has been hired as Director/Sales Development to manage the creation of sales marketing materials, trade, events and collateral for the network. Both are based at ABC Family’s New York office.

Monday – A18-49 Analysis: NBC racked up a win Monday night with 5.0/12 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. On this night, FOX was second at 4.8/11, and then CBS 4.6/11, ABC 3.2/8, UNIV 1.9/5, CW 1.1/3 and TELE 0.4/1. NBC had the best ratings during 8p with Deal or No Deal at 5.2/13, while FOX’s season premiere of Prison Break came in second at 4.2/10. At 9p, NBC topped the chart again with Heroes at 6.5/15. CBS resumed its 10p winning slot with CSI: Miami delivering a 6.0/15.
