Good Morning. It’s Wednesday, January 23, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing. So much for “pilot” season at NBC. Jeff Zucker announced yesterday the network would no longer order up pilots as a matter of course each year leading into the upfront season, thereby saving the network tens of millions of dollars, reports The NY Times. Typically each year, NBC and the other broadcast networks order up a series of pilots for shows in development, choose a handful of them as potential primetime series in the upcoming season, and show the pilots to advertisers during the upfront season. No more, says Zucker. Rather, the network would order perhaps one or two pilots each season. Zucker says the reason for this decision is pure economics in light of the current WGA strike and due to the current US economy. Tonight’s Premieres: ~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~
The WGA and AMPTP begin informal talks today to see if there is a basis for both parties to resume formal negotiations. Each side has agreed to halt public comments until these informal discussions have concluded. The influences of the strike continue to be felt with the cut backs of various projects in development. Earlier this week CBS announced it would be cutting back a slew of projects, mostly dramas, with scripts that had not yet been delivered to the network. And today comes news Fox and The CW will be doing the same, with speculation ABC won’t be far behind. The NFL Conference Championship games this past weekend resulted in an average of 49.7 million viewers. Specifically, the AFC Championship game on Sunday afternoon on CBS (Chargers at Patriots) drew in 44.8 million; and the primetime NFC Championship game on FOX (Giants at Packers) spiked up to 53.9 million viewers. This level is almost equal to the January 1995 championship weekend when an average of 49.9 million viewers watched the Chargers take on the Steelers and the Cowboys vs. the 49ers. Could this current football fever be an indication of a mongo Super Bowl tune-in next weekend? Sci Fi Channel has picked up the cable rights to the off-net CBS series Jericho, seasons 1 and 2, reports THR. The show kicks off on February 11 with a 4-hour marathon before settling into its regularly weekly time period – Mondays at 10p. Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS, Inc.) and NASCAR extended their contract for Turner Sports to continue operating NASCAR.com through 2014. Turner Sports provides oversight in all areas including content creation, e-commerce and race tickets sales direct from NASCAR sanctioned race track operators. Additionally, Turner Sports will offer news content, broadband coverage, wireless platforms, video downloads and ad sales. Turner Sports has been operating NASCAR.com since 2001. The Democratic Presidential Debate presented on CNN Monday night drew in a record-breaking crowd of 4.9 million – the most of any cable-carried debate in television history. The previous record was also set by CNN in conjunction with YouTube with the November 28 Republican party debates delivering 4.5 million viewers. The next debate scheduled will air on MSNBC tomorrow night beginning at 9p with all of the Republican candidates in tow – minus Fred Thompson who dropped out yesterday. In a new four-episode series airing over two nights, the Science Channel will explore the history of the internet with the founders of eBay, Amazon, Netscape, Google and others. Oxygen returns Tori & Dean … Still Inn Love (wt) for a third season slated to debut this summer. In this new season, Tori and Dean move back to Los Angeles after realizing owning a country bed and breakfast inn, while being new parents and juggling acting careers was too much. The eight, one-hour episodes are produced by World of Wonder Productions. Bravo renewed Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List for a fourth season and the one-hour episodes will be produced by Picture This Television. One of the killer apps here may be the ability to search for Comcast On Demand programming through the Tivo interface. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has unveiled the nominees for the 80th Academy Awards. Of the 12 animated movies that qualified for Oscar consideration, this year’s Best Animated Feature Film nominees are Sony Pictures Classics’ Persepolis, Disney’s Ratatouille and Sony Pictures Releasing’s Surf’s Up. In total for the kid-targeted movies Ratatouille received five nods, with three a piece for Transformers and Enchanted, followed by Golden Compass and Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End with two each, and Surf’s Up and Norbit with one. A big winner yesterday was Lucasfilm, which has a total of six nominations, three each for its Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound divisions. The Academy Awards will be handed out live on Sunday, February 24, 2008 on ABC, from 8p. The Oscars will be televised in 200+ countries worldwide.
