Good Morning, it’s Wednesday, January 17, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing, from the NATPE Convention in Las Vegas.

With the expansion of NBC‘s Today show to four hours, the network has cancelled its daytime soap Passions, giving stations an easy way to accommodate Today’s fourth hour.  Passions will likely continue thru August, and the newly expanded Today show is scheduled to begin in September. There is some speculation NBC will continue with it’s soap, perhaps on a different platform.

Tonight’s Premieres:
Fox:  American Idol at 8p
MTV:  Maui Fever at 1030p
Comedy Central:  Naked Trucker & T-Bones Show at 1030p

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Close of business today is the deadline for potential buyers to submit their proposal to acquire Tribune Co.  There is much guess work as to who the potential buyers will be, and whether or not an attractive proposal to buy the entire company would be submitted at all.  In fact, some analysts have suggested today’s deadline could come and go without any announcement by Tribune. The full company includes a multitude of local broadcast stations, three cable networks and a radio network, more than a dozen newspapers, a few online businesses and the Chicago Cubs. Shares of Tribune stock fell 8 cents yesterday, closing at $30.52, marking a decline in the share value of approx one-third since 2003.

Attention Amazing Race Fans!  Mark your calendars and grab your helmuts – The Amazing Race: ALL-STARS returns to CBS on Sunday, February 18 at 8p.

Gospel Music Channel is launching a new 10-episode series called Best of the Doves, highlighting the most memorable moments from the past 37 years of the gospel music industry’s Dove Awards.  The show is set to premiere on January 27, airing Saturdays at 8p, repeating at 11p.

FSN and MyNetworkTV have reached a TV/new media programming alliance with the International Fight League (IFL), a team-based professional Mixed Martial Arts league. The IFL, made up of 12 teams, launches its first full 11-date season this Friday in Oakland, California.  FSN has multi-year rights to air 22 one-hour late night event programs produced by the IFL, starting in 2nd qtr this year. The agreement also extends to IFL-related digital media rights.  As for MyNetworkTV, it will broadcast 22 two-hour IFL-produced programs, mixing event action, highlights and league news, and set to begin in mid-2007.

Nielsen Media Research will begin providing it’s client base with commercial-minute ratings later on this year. The first release on January 29 will be an updated version of Nielsen’s NPOWER software, and data that goes back to the start of the January measurement period.  Then, on April 24, the company will release its All Minute Data File, which allows clients to download Nielsen’s core data.  And finally, on May 31st (after all the cable and broadcast upfront presentations), Nielsen will begin offering a new Average Commercial Minute electronic data file, providing an average rating for the commercial minutes in each TV show. That “evaluation data” file will include all broadcast, cable and syndicated programming for May-August 2007, and will be available to Nielsen clients free of charge.

NATPE Syndication Update:

  • As expected, NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution officially launched its new 60m syndicated strip series starring Steve Wilkos, who will offer advice and dole out his own version of justice.  No title yet, but there are a handful of clearances, most notably from Tribune’s WPIX/New York, KTLA/LA, WGN/Chicago and WPHL/Philadelphia.  Sinclair stations in Tampa, Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Raleigh have also picked up the show.
  • CBS Television Distribution‘s Rachael Ray has been renewed through the 2009-2010 season.  The show debuted last September and thus far this season is averaging a 2.1 HH rating. The show is currently renewed through 2010 in about one-third of the country, with stations from CBS, Gannett Broadcasting, Post-Newsweek, Scripps Howard, McGraw-Hill and Evening Telegram signing on for two more years.
  • Litton Entertainment’s syndicated weekly series Home Team with host Troy McClain, is a firm go for season three. The announcement was made by executive in charge of production Stephanie J. Durham.

~ BROADBAND AND DIGITAL ~

QuickPlay Media announced its new QuickPlayer for BlackBerry application, designed to allow users to receive streaming audiocasts to their BlackBerry devices. The subscription based service, which goes for $7.95/month, will provide access to business and finance updates, as well as premium news, entertainment, health and sports information, via channels. Content providers include ABC News, AccuWeather.com Clear Channel, The Wall Street Journal, and by the way Cynopsis in a couple of weeks, among others.  For more information on QuickPlay Media, or to download the application GetQuickPlayer.com, check out  http://www.quickplay.com.

~ PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT ~

North Carolina based Third Floor Productions has signed a deal with the Miguel Abreu Gallery in New York to develop a reality show that follows the work and lifestyle of art dealers and gallery owners in the high-pressure art world of New York City.  Miguel Abreu will be one of the art dealers and also serve as a consultant.

TLC has ordered up three new pilots:

  • Kleinfeld’s Bridal (wt) takes viewers into the inner workings of Kleinfeld’s, the world’s premier bridal salon. The show will follow Kleinfeld staff as they work to make each bride happy – rarely an easy task. The project is from Half Yard Productions.
  • I’ve Got Nothing to Wear from New Harbor Entertainment, endeavors to work women on their current wardrobes, rather than buying all new.  Each episode recycles, reuses and rejuvenates a wardrobe into something new with the help of a host, stylist and seamstresses.
  • You’re Driving Me Crazy from Tiger Aspect takes hopelessly bad drivers and attempts to rehabilitate them. The team includes an instructor and psychologist will help with the art and stress of driving, and an examiner who determines whether the drivers will make the grade.

Fox has handed out two pilot orders:

  • Playing Chicken from Werner-Gold-Miller and Warner Bros. TV.  The odd-couple style comedy is about two brothers forced to live with each other after one becomes wheelchair bound.
  • When Women Rule The World is a reality show from Rocket Science Laboratories, says Variety.  This show sounds like a little Temptation Island, a little Survivor, with a dash of The Bachelor.  Here’s how it works – 12 women are running this “world” and creating the society in which women rule. Enter 12 macho guys who have to do what the women tell them, including building the accommodations and finding water.  It’s a game of survival, and the last man standing, wins.  Fox plans to bring this puppy out in the spring.

Casting Call:  Auditions for MTV’s Making the Band 4 will kick off on January 17th in LA, and boy-band candidates are invited to audition. Those who can’t make it to the auditions can post their video online at www.makingtheband.MTV.com, which will also give viewers a chance to vote on their favorite candidates.  The series is scheduled to premiere in 2nd qtr 2007.
