Good Morning.  It’s Wednesday, January 16, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.   

Oprah Winfrey and Discovery Communications revealed plans to create a new multi-platform media venture, OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network. Slated to launch next year in more than 70 million homes on what is currently the Discovery Health Channel, the project includes The network’s mission is to develop many platforms for women, men and their families to enable them “to celebrate life, to inspire and entertain, empowering viewers around the world to live their best lives.” Oprah will be Chairman of The Oprah Winfrey Network, LLC, contributing her talent as well as having complete editorial control and responsible for OWN’s programming, branding and creative vision. In this cashless deal, The Oprah Winfrey Network, LLC will be an independent company owned 50/50 by Discovery and Harpo. In turn, Discovery will manage distribution, origination and operations, while both organizations will supply advertising sales services to the joint venture. An executive search for a CEO to supervise the daily operations of OWN will begin immediately.

Travel Channel debuts a new travel show with a food emphasis tonight as The Feasty Boys Eat America begins at 8p. The show follows Jon Mayer and Jim Stump as they search cross country for down-home, hearty food, unique to each locale, that meets their requirements, the Four B’s  beer, bacon, butter and “better not forget the cheese.” The series continues through February 13 and is produced by Creative Differences.

Broadcast Evening News Ratings Wrap-Up: The first full week of 2008 opened with NBC’s Nightly News in the lead, although the gap between NBC and ABC narrowed from the previous week. The final results for the week of January 7, 2008 are:
NBC: 9.67 million total viewers and 2.5/9 A25-54
ABC: 9.28 million total viewers and 2.4/8 A25-54
CBS: 6.86 million total viewers and 1.8/6 A25-54

VH1 had a double dose of second season premieres this past Sunday night: Rock of Love with Bret Michaels (9p) attracted 3.7 million total viewers, and among A18-49 viewers hit a 2.6 rating with 2.9 million viewers. Scott Baio is 46 … And Pregnant drew in 1.6 million total viewers and among A18-49 viewers posted a 1.2 rating with 1.3 million viewers.

NBC is revving up for a new pilot based on the international series Top Gear from BBC Worldwide America. This car series franchise features celebrity guests, road tests, car profiles and time trials of super-cars from around the world. Top Gear originally premiered in the U.K. in 1977 and currently reaches more than 150 million households worldwide. The U.K. version began in the U.S. on BBC America last year.

Gameplay HD, one of the VOOM HD Networks with programming focused on video gaming, is partnering with Electronic Arts to develop a new six-part series about the 2007 EA SPORTS Madden Challenge presented by Best Buy. Premiering February 2 at 1p to coincide with Super Bowl weekend, the series will feature the annual football gaming tournament.

The Lair is returning to here! following a second season order for the original series. Production, set to kick off in mid-February, will consist of 9 additional episodes to air on here! in Fall 2008.

Casting Call: FOX’s reality competition series So You Think You Can Dance will premiere its fourth edition this summer and will begin a national search for dancers this week. The auditions open in Dallas this Thursday, 8a at McFarlin Memorial Auditorium at Southern Methodist University. Other cities include Charleston on January 31; Salt Lake City on February 4; Washington, D.C. on February 21; Los Angeles on March 6; and Milwaukee on March 20. Registration begins at 8a in each city. Applicants who are traveling to cities for the auditions should plan on staying at least two days following their auditions for callbacks. Casting Call: Bravo’s two reality series, Top Design and Shear Genius return for second seasons in 2008. Open calls for both shows begin this month and more information can be found at . Top Design auditions kick off January 25-26 in San Francisco; followed by January 28-29 in Las Vegas; February 5 in Dallas; February 8 in New York; and February 9 in Los Angeles. Shear Genius auditions begin January 20 in Dallas; January 21 in Miami; January 27 in Los Angeles and New York City; January 28 in Chicago; and February 4 in San Francisco.


CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Steve Jobs wowed the faithful at Macworld when he unveiled the ultra thin MacBook Air. But 20th Century Fox CEO Jim Gianopulos also upped his street cred among the digital crowd when he joined Jobs on stage to discuss a new DVD copy service now available for Fox titles on iTunes. The deal will allow customers to copy newly purchased DVDs to their iTunes library. Jobs also introduced the iTunes Movie Rental service  offering movies from Touchstone, Miramax, LionsGate, Fox, Warner Brothers, Walt Disney, Paramount, Universal and Sony for one time viewing on Apple computers and devices. The rental window will open up 30 days after the DVD release, with prices set at $3.99 for new releases, $2.99 for older titles and a $1 surcharge added for movies in HD. Jobs’ annual address caused such a fervor in the Bay area that users overloaded the popular microblogging service Twitter , which was reportedly down for several hours.  Full edition: CYN DIGITAL. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  This week marks beta test launch for PBS Kids Play!, PBS’ new early education broadband, ad-free subscription based service aimed at preschoolers K3-6.  PBS Kids Play will be offered as a subscription service toward the end of 1Q 2008.  The site is designed to provide individual home learning through newly-developed virtual games and activities all based national educational standards (e.g. math, science, language, creativity, healthy, etc).  Characters from PBS Kids programs guide kids through each game and activity, which feature various skill levels as well as objectives and instructions for parents, and progress charts.  PBS Kids Play, which will be available for $9.95/month or $79/year.  Full edition: CYN KIDS.

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Devine Entertainment Corporation inked a broadcast deal with Hungary’s Duna TV public broadcaster through Devine’s global distributor, France-based Carrere Group.  The sale covers 19 children’s films and franchise titles, including Beethoven Lives Upstairs, The Composers Specials, The Inventors’ Specials, and The Artists’ Specials.  Full edition: CYN INTERNATIONAL.

Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. advanced three top-level executives to be President of their respective units, with expanded duties and each reporting directly to Phil Kent, Turner Broadcasting Chairman/CEO. All three previously reported to Mark Lazarus who is departing the company and his position as President/Turner Entertainment Group.

  • Steve Koonin is President/Turner Entertainment Networks in charge of TBS, TNT, Turner Classic Movies and truTV, with oversight of programming, marketing, scheduling, strategy, operations, advertising sales and marketing on behalf of these networks. Steve will also manage Peachtree TV.
  • David Levy as President/Turner Broadcasting Sales, Inc. will head sales strategy and operations for all the Turner domestic entertainment, animation and news networks and businesses. He will continue overseeing ad sales for sports and entertainment digital properties and will remain President/Turner Sports.
  • Stuart Snyder is now President/COO of Turner Animation, Young Adults & Kids Media, supervising programming, marketing, scheduling, strategy, operations, advertising sales and marketing and consumer products for Cartoon Network, Boomerang, Adult Swim and their digital extensions. He will also manage GameTap, Super Deluxe and the unit’s animation production facilities in Atlanta and Los Angeles.

AMC tapped former NSM at the TV Guide Network, Bob Bel Bruno as VP/Advertising Sales to lead ad sales for the New York region and to develop and implement marketing goals to enhance the brand across all platforms and audiences. Bob will report to Bill Rosolie, EVP/National Ad Sales, AMC. 

Warner Bros. Pictures names Sue Kroll to the newly created position of President, Worldwide Marketing.  Both Warner Bros. domestic and international theatrical marketing divisions will report to one office, overseen by Sue.  Her appointment follows last week’s departure of the studio’s head of domestic movie marketing, Dawn Taubin, as well as the appointment of Kevin McCormick to President, Production.  McCormick takes over for Jeff Robinov, who was recently upped to President, Warner Bros. Motion Pictures Group.

Major changes afoot at 20th Century Fox TV beginning with Jennifer Nicholas Salke upped to oversee all drama and comedy development at the studio.  Heading up each of those individual depts will be Patrick Moran for drama; and Jonathan Davis moves from Fox Bcsting over tot he studio overseeing comedy, replacing Quan Phung whose deal is not being renewed.

Vince Cellini returns to the GOLF CHANNEL as one of the network’s studio personalities. He will resume his previous role as a main anchor for Golf Central, the network’s nightly news program, in addition to hosting the series The Grey Goose 19th Hole.
