CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

01/11/06

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 11, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

You haven’t gotten rid of Michael Eisner just yet – he’ll be hosting his own talk show on CNBC, appropriately titled Conversations with Michael Eisner. The show will air just six times a year, in primetime, with Eisner chatting with leaders in business, politics, entertainment, etc. No news yet on the first airdate.

Season Premieres:
UPN:  South Beach beginning at 8p
WB:   Beauty & the Geek – Casting Special kicks off the new series

* MORE GOOD STUFF *How do you get all of these numbers into one story:  17, 416, 182, 233, 75%? NBC’s Olympics. Here’s the skinny – the Winter Games begin next month and last for 17 days.  NBC, USA, MSNBC and CNBC, Telemundo, and two hi-def channels, NBC HD and Universal HD, will collectively carry 416 hours of Olympic programming. 182 hours will be seen on NBC; with the remaining 233 hours on cable. As for the 75%?  The amount of live coverage.  Full information and schedule can be found at   http://www.nbcolympics.com.

E! announced at the Television Critics Association yesterday in Pasadena that it will soon launch a broadband channel called The Vine @ E! Online, streaming exclusive video and original content on the internet.  Per Hollywood Reporter, The Vine @ E! Online’s inaugural performance will be live from the Red Carpet at the Golden Globe Awards, and featuring Ryan Seacrest as your host. The channel will have six sub-headings:  Red Carpet, What’s Hot, E! News & Gossip, E!TV Bonus, Movies and Wild Zone.  Original content to the broadband channel will also be available on your mobile, as well as to  Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio subscribers.

Also at the TCA presentations in Pasadena was BET who announced three new series:

  • Season of the Tiger, a reality show focusing on five students in the Mighty Tiger March Band drumline Grambling State University in Louisiana.
  • Meet the Faith, a Sunday morning talk show between religious leaders.
  • Lil’ Kim: Countdown to Lockdown.  This reality show focuses on the two weeks before Lil’ Kim was incarcerated on a perjury charge last September.  She is currently serving her one year and one day sentence.

Food Network was up at TCA and announced three new series and a new limited series:

  • Ham on the Street:  set to debut tonight at 1030p, this show features George Duran, both a chef and a comic, who asks people on the street various food-related questions.
  • Healthy Appetite with Ellie Krieger:  Quick and healthy recipes from nutritionist/author Ellie Krieger – this show is set to debut in April.
  • Mario Shoots for the Stars (a working title) is all about Mario Batali and how he is able to balance work on his Food Network series, overseeing his restaurants, books, personal appearances, and oh yeah, his life.  This show kicks off on February 18 at 9p.
  • Chefography is a limited five part series profiling the Food Network’s favorite chefs, and will premiere on March 13 at 8p

ESPN2 is prepping its late night offering – Quite Frankly with Stephen A. Smith will move to 11p starting January 30, from its original 630p time period.  And sliding in at 630p on that same day will be a 30m evening version of ESPN2’s morning show Mike & Mike.  The question will be can a 630p show work with an 11p audience; and can a morning show work with an prime access audience.

Well before its theatrical release, FX and jumped up and bought the cable TV rights to the Warner Bros. film Superman Returns.  The film premieres in June 2006.  According to Variety, the fee will be for 12% of the domestic box office, with a cap.  What that $$ cap will be will be decided by whether or not Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution has sold the film rights to a second cable network, and the length of the term agreement. However it works out, Superman Returns will be seen first on FX in 2009.  WBDCD also sold the rights to the Harrison Ford film Firewall to FX; that film is set to release next month. Both films will first be seen in its paycable window on HBO.

Cox Communications, Inc., has unveiled its plan to launch a family programming package.  Cox plans to rollout its Family Package to in four markets, San Diego, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, and Northern Virginia before the end of 1Q 2006.  The package will include about 40 networks and local affiliates, including CSPAN, Superstation WGN, TV Guide Channel, Disney Channel, Discovery Kids, Headline News, National Geographic Channel, HGTV, DIY Network, Nickelodeon, Fit TV, Sprout, Discovery Science, Boomerang and GSN.  Local systems will be able to hone the package according to the needs of its subscribers, to include The Weather Channel or Weatherscan Local, CSPAN 2 or 3, and additional religious and Spanish-language channels. The average cost of the Family Package will be about $32 per month.

* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *CBS has ordered up a pilot of an untitled comedy project from writer/exec prod Paul Reiser about a young guy who takes over the management of his family’s car dealership in Queens NY.  Paramount Network Television will produce.

NBC has a new project in development based on the theatrical film Friday Night Lights.  The film was co-written and directed by Peter Berg, who will also write/direct the pilot.  Producing the project are Imagine Television and NBC Universal TV.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *ABC Radio Networks today announced that Carlette Peters has joined the New York Sales office assuming the role of Account Executive, and reports to Chip Gedney, Senior Director/ New York Sales for ABC Radio Networks. In her new position, Carlette is responsible for the sales efforts for ABC Radio Networks properties in the New York region.

Eric Wold has joined Octagon as Director/Octagon Speakers to expand the agency’s speaking business. In this newly created position, Eric will procure speaking engagements for Octagon’s sports and entertainment clients as well as create special events and themed speaking series. He will be based at Octagon’s headquarters in McLean, Virginia.

The AIM Tell-A-Vision announced the hiring of Michael Castelló, VP/Advertising Sales, to oversee its rapidly expanding advertising sales. He will report directly to AIM TV CEO, Robert G. Rose. Michael most recently served as VP/MediaAmerica en Español, a division of Jones Media Networks.

Fox Searchlight Pictures has upped Stephen Gilula and Nancy Utley to COO from their previous posts as President/Distribution and President/Marketing respectively.  Together Utley and Gilula along with Peter Rice, President/Fox Searchlight Pictures, will manage the company including production, acquisitions, marketing and distribution.
