Cynopsis

1/10/07

Good Morning, it’s Wednesday, January 10, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Just days before NATPE, Twentieth Television and FremantleMedia North America announced a new 30m game show for syndication, debuting this Fall.  Temptation is based on the older game show Sale of the Century, with three contestants answering questions on pop cultural and current events, all in hopes of winning the most cash.  During the course of the game, contestants are tempted to use some of their winnings to purchase high-end prizes for relatively modest prices.  Interestingly, for the first time in US game show history, the prizes on the show will also be available to purchase by viewers over the phone or via the show’s website.  Clearances for Temptation include the ten Fox-owned MyNetworkTV affiliates in New York, LA, CHicago, Dallas, Washington DC, Houston, Minneapolis, Phoenix, Orlando, and Baltimore, representing 24% of the US.

Tonight’s Premieres:
CBS:  Armed and Famous at 8p
Oxygen:  Tease at 9p and Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency at 10p
TV Land:  TV Land Myths and Legends at 10p

Tonight’s Finale:
Fox Reality: Corkscrewed: The Wrath of Grapes at 9p

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

President Bush is scheduled to address the nation this evening at 9pm and speak for approximately 30 minutes.  Check the listings at the bottom of this edition – each of the networks is handling the night a little differently.

A&E‘s newest reality series Sons of Hollywood is schedule to launch with back-to-back episodes on Sunday April 1st at 10p.  A&E has ordered up 12 episodes which follow Randy Spelling, son of the late Aaron Spelling; Sean Stewart, son of Rod Stewart; and young talent manager David Weintraub.  As they say, all that glitters isn’t gold, and the lives of these three isn’t all necessarily as it appears. Sons Of Hollywood is a production of iCandyTV.

Gay, Straight or Taken? debuted on Lifetime Monday night at 8p delivered 1.3 million total viewers for the first half hour, and 1.6 million for the second half hour.  The show averaged a 1.2 HH rating.

VH1‘s 9pm debut of I Love New York from 51 Minds Ent on Monday night delivered a 2.6 A18-49 rating, making it highest rated series premiere ever on VH1, and the 6th highest rated telecast in the channel’s history.

Fox Reality will surpass the 35 million subscriber mark in its second year. Fox Reality has new distribution agreements with Comcast Cable and Time Warner Cable, and is also carried on satellite services including DIRECTV and its programming is available on a variety of platforms including TV, broadband and mobile devices.

~ BROADBAND AND DIGITAL ~

The new Apple TV and/or the iPhone weren’t the only announcements made by Apple yesterday (tho you gotta admit, that phone is sweet!).  Paramount Pictures will be making available on iTunes it’s classic movie library, including Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Chinatown, and newer library releases such as What Women Want and School of Rock, all downloadable at $9.99 per title. Paramount is only the 2nd studio to team with Apple to sell movies on iTunes – the other being Disney. Disney titles sell for more: $12.99 if you pre-order a new release,  $14.99 for a new release and $9.99 thereafter.

At the Consumer Electronics Show, CBS and Sling Media announced their beta test of a technology designed to help audiences share content clips. Called Clip+Sling, the technology is designed to allow the user to clip and share content from live or recorded TV within a process in the SlingPlayer application.  The clips can then be shared with others, and not just other Slingbox users.  The trial is scheduled to begin in second qtr 2007,and more details will be provided when the product is near launch.

~ PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT ~

MTV and Bunim-Murray Productions are heading into the 19th season of The Real World by heading down under.   Production will begin in Sydney, Australia this quarter with the premiere of the new 24-episode season scheduled for 4Q2007.

A&E has ordered up a three new projects:

  • Hollywood DMV is an animated project set at the motor vehicle department’s office and focuses not only on the employees in the midst of office politics, but also the customers waiting online, often played by stand-up comics doing their stand-up routines.  This project is from Popular Arts Ent.
  • Alien Encounters from Original Prods is described as “the first show to tackle the controversial field of unexplained phenomena by investigating paranormal activity with its own objective and highly credible task force.”
  • Patti Novak: America’s Toughest Matchmaker (wt) from Sharp Entertainment and Smash Advertising is about a matchmaker who puts two people together in each episode.  Cameras follow thru the initial meeting, the first date and the sometimes hard to take follow-up interview.

Per Variety, IFC has ordered a pilot of ZO2, a scripted/improv project about a real heavy metal band that while struggling to make it to the big time, is playing little kid birthday parties by day as The Z Brothers, and their music by night, as ZO2. The project is from MarkMark Prods.

Additionally, IFC has also ordered three scripts:

  • Pornopolis is a scripted drama from World of Wonder, about a normal average family living in LA, where mom and dad are in the adult entertainment business.
  • Elevated is a workplace comedy set in an office where their primary business is anti-terrorism.  This project is from writer Jason Reich.
  • And a dramedy called Bad Habits from writer Gary Lennon, and it focuses on a group of people who all have serious addictions – drugs, booze, sex, you get the idea.

Five pilot orders
from NBC:

  • The IT Crowd is a workplace comedy set in an IT Help Dept, based on the UK series created by Graham Lineman.  The project is from NBC Universal and FremantleMedia
  • The Watch, a drama from Pariah, is about a neighborhood watch group who takes themselves way to seriously and things go very wrong.
  • Kath & Kim is a comedy about the dysfunctional relationship between a mother and her adult daughter, from Reveille and NBC Universal.
  • I’m With Stupid is based on the BBC comedy about a guy who becomes good friends with a handicapped man, and moves into his group home for the disabled.  This project comes from Reveille, BBC, Conundrum Ent and NBC Universal
  • And finally a cast-contingent pilot order for Journeyman about a man who travels back in time to help people in trouble. The drama project is from 20th Century Fox TV.
