Good morning. It’s Wednesday, February 9, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Skywriter Media & Entertainment Group and Teletoon Canada are partnering to develop the new K6-11-targeted animated comedy series, Camp Lakebottom. Created by Betsy McGowen and Eric Jacobson, the animated comedy follows the summer adventures of campers and their creep show counselors at the awesomely horrible Camp Lakebottom, where everyone seems to still have a great time. Developed by Skywriter’s Meghan Davies and Teletoon’s Athena Georgaklis, Camp Lakebottom is written by Shelly Hoffman and Rob Pincombe (Kid vs Kat), designed by Jam Filled’s Phil Lafrance and Jamie Leclaire (Jimmy Two Shoes, Crash Canyon) and executive produced by Skywriter Television’s Kevin Gillis (Atomic Betty, Jimmy Two Shoes). The series is being developed for multiple platforms, so that users can log onto an online camp, where they can play games and create a unique avatar.

Little Airplane Productions is offering limited enrollment in a unique workshop led by accomplished preschool TV veterans on creating a hit preschool series. Lectures include Pitching, Writing, Research, Producing, Design, Music, Directing, Legal, Licensing, and more plus a notable panel of children’s television network executives.
Mr. Men heads to the big screen as Fox Animation joins with producers Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum movies, Fantastic Voyage 3D, Big Fat Liar) and David Heyman (Harry Potter movies), per THR. Based on author Roger Hargreaves’ popular Mr. Men books, the animated movie will be produced by Heyman through his Heyday Films and Levy by way of his Fox-based 21 Laps Entertainment banner. The Mr. Men characters have been adapted several times as an animated series, the most recent Renegade Animation’s The Mr. Men Show. Of course, Mr. Men is also a popular licensed property.
The Radio Disney Junior-branded preschool music block gets its debut on Monday, February 14 (12n-1p) on Radio Disney, which comes simultaneous to the launch of Disney Junior on Disney Channel and Disney.com. Radio Disney Junior, currently called Playhouse Disney on Radio Disney, will feature music aimed at preschoolers and “audio theater” featuring Disney Junior characters. The weekday radio programming block will be hosted by DJ Hallie. Over the course of the first month of Radio Disney Junior, DJ Hallie will be joined by characters from Disney Junior series including Jake and the Never Land Pirates, the Imagination Movers, and Choo Choo Soul, among others.
CBeebies Channel (UK) acquires a third season of Ludorum‘s preschool animated series Chuggington, including 26×10 new episodes (for a total of 104×10). Additionally, CBeebies has ordered more episodes of the Chuggington mini-series, Badge Quest (13×4, for a total of 52×4). The new season of Chuggington, which will feature more cinematic quality animation and increased special effects and introducing eight new engines, is currently salted to bow in early 2012.
The Hub honors Presidents Day, Monday, February 21, with marathons of two of the network’s series. Viewers can watch three hours of the animated G.I. Joe Renegades (3p-6p), followed by six back-to-back, hour-long episodes of its live-action game show Family Game Night! (6p-12a).
Breakthrough Entertainment has begun production on Crash Canyon Adventure, a new online social game based on the animated TV series Crash Canyon, for Teletoon Canada. Targeted to tweens and adults, Crash Canyon Adventure is set to roll out in September 2011 in French and English and will debut on Teletoon at Night/La Nuit websites. Breakthrough Entertainment partners with Big Blue Bubble, an Ontario-based game creator, for development. Breakthrough Entertainment’s digital media division secured funding support for Crash Canyon Adventure from the Bell Broadcast and New Media Fund, the Ontario Media Development Corporation (Interactive Digital Media Fund) and the Shaw Rocket Fund’s Digital Media Stream.
Nelvana Enterprises announces new episodes of several animated series, with new licensing efforts and opportunities for each property:
- Max & Ruby – 26×30 new episodes (comprised of 3×7 segments) are currently in production for this preschool series. Licensees onboard in the US, where the series can be seen on Nickelodeon, include Sara Max, VTech, Bakery Crafts and Penguin, and Ty Beanies in both the US and Canada, where the series airs on Treehouse. Max & Rub DVDs continue to be released by Nickelodeon Home Entertainment (US) and Phase 4 (Canada). Koba Entertainment is touring a Max & Ruby stage show in Canada and the US this year. Max & Ruby is produced in association with Silver Lining Productions, a Chorion company.
- Beyblade: Metal Masters – Nelvana and d-rights release 51×30 new episodes of the anime series. Hasbro is the master toy partner worldwide, with 26 licensees signed up by Nelvana to date. Hudson Entertainment, the video game partner for the property, has released Nintendo DS and Wii titles in the Americas. Vivendi, the North American Home Entertainment partner, has released two titles with the next release set for spring 2011. The virtual battle site (
- Bakugan: Mechtanium Surge – season four (26×30) of the anime series will debut in Canada and the US this month. Bakugan toy line from Spin Master features the addition of action figures and battle vehicles. Licensees in Canada include Paris Geneve (apparel), Calego (bags), Black & White (footwear), Hallmark (party goods), Colgate (toothbrushes, toothpaste) and 3M (bandages). Opportunities in Canada include consumer packaged goods promotions and others. Home Entertainment partners include Vivendi Entertainment in Canada and Warner Home Video in the US. Mattel and Stardoll ( www.stardoll.com ), the teen/tween girl targeted online fashion game, enter into a multi-year licensing deal. The partnership plans to bring Stardoll into the physical world with the first product line salted for fall 2011. Stardoll launched in 2006 and reports having 92+ million registered users worldwide, reaching 15+ unique users per month. Stardoll is part of the Stardoll Network, which is home to teen, tween, and young women-targeted websites that also includes Piczo ( www.piczo.com ), a self-expression and blogging site, and PaperDollHeaven.com ( www.paperdollheaven.com ), a game-play environment for younger girls. Based in Sweden, the company is backed by venture capital firms Sequoia Capital and Index Ventures.
HIT Entertainment finalizes two new licensing deals with KidKraft and Kids Only for Thomas & Friends-themed kid’s room decor and furniture lines, which will be available in the US and Canada from spring 2011. KidKraft is developing a line of Thomas & Friends wood furniture, including a toy box, toddler bed, table and chair set, and a step ‘n store. Kids Only Inc, will produce a variety of metal and plastic room decor and patio furniture products.
CPLG, the exclusive global licensing agent for the World Famous Harlem Globetrotters ( www.harlemglobetrotters.com), completes a licensing deal with Freeze, a division of Central Mills, to create Harlem Globetrotters apparel. Set to launch this June 2011, the Harlem Globetrotters apparel line from Freeze will include t-shirts, knit tops and hoodies for men, boys and juniors, athletic shorts, track suits and tank tops for men and boys. CPLG is the licensing arm of Cookie Jar Entertainment.
Zodiak Rights inks new licensing deals for Simon’s Cat. Newly appointed licensees are: Castle Melamine as giftware licensee will produce a range of Simon’s Cat branded products including coasters, mouse mats, tablemats, puzzle postcards, and badges; ECP Designs serving as the homeware license will launch products such as Simon’s Cat egg cups, tea towels, aprons and oven gloves. Both companies are set to launch their products at Spring Fair with ECP Designs rolling out more Simon’s Cat product in time for Pulse. Rubicon Group Holding appoints Shin Ueno to the newly created position of Global Marketing & Brand Management Director. Ueno, who will at the company’s US offices in LA, will seek out new intellectual properties and develop new partnerships around the world, as well as manage communication efforts. Ueno will report to Rubicon Group CEO, Randa Ayoubi, and Executive Director/North America and Europe, David Corbett. A 20-year marketing and licensing industry veteran, Ueno most recently served as VP/Brand Management, 4Kids Entertainment. He previously toiled for Jada Toys, Playhut, and Hasbro, Jakks Pacific, and Bandai America.

Nickelodeon‘s Crush Week on-air event began with a special night of programming hosted by Justin Bieber and featuring new episodes of Victorious, Big Time Rush and True Jackson VP, on Saturday, February 5, 8-9:30p, which drew 9 million Total Viewer and besting all broadcast and basic cable networks in kid and tween demos for the time period. Individually the new episode of Victorious (8p) was tops with on all TV among the kid and tween demos, Big Time Rush (8:30p) took the time period on all TV with kid demos, and the new episode True Jackson, VP (9p) earned its highest telecast with kids since 2009.
