Cynopsis: Kids!
02/08/12
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, February 8, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.
This week marks the launch of Nick Jr. Israel preschool channel, under a joint venture between Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) and its longtime local partner Ananey Communications. The 24-hour locally managed Hebrew language Nick Jr. service will launch on cable operator, HOT and will be seen in 900,000 Israeli households. Nick Jr. Israel is designed to stimulate, educate, encourage interaction and excite preschoolers through a mix of local and international programming. The new channel will feature original Nick Jr. programming including Dora the Explorer, Blue’s Clues, Go! Diego, Go!, Bubble Guppies, The WonderPets! and Team Umizoomi. Nickelodeon Israel, also local language channel, launched in summer 2003 and now reaches 1.5 million households, according to Nick.
Italy-based Atlantyca Entertainment is partnering with Spain-based Imira Entertainment, Malaysia’s Inspidea to develop and produce the new animated series Bat Pat, The Creepy Sitcom (52×11), they announced at Kidscreen Summit in NYC this week. Based on the popular Bat Pat book series, Bat Pat, The Creepy Sitcom follows the spooky and comical adventures of Bat Pat, a flying, talking scaredy bat, and his friends Martin, Leo and Rebecca Silver, a group of supernatural investigators of a small town called Fogville. The intrepid team will look into everything that goes bump in the night, or the library or anywhere else.
Dentsu Entertainment USA and Namco Bandai enter into a multi-territory partnership for the master toy license for the Japanese animated TV series LBX (Little Battlers eXperience), which is currently in its second season on TV Tokyo (Japan). The deal will see Bandai America developing an new LBX toy line, based on the robots featured in the series, including figures, role play, vehicles and action model kits, for distribution in the Americas currently slated for fall 2013. Under a separate agreement, Namco Bandai has also inked a master toy license deal with TV Tokyo for European territories, which will also be available from fall 2013. Set in the year 2050 when kids have miniature customizable LBX robots that battle, the series revolves around a boy that has control over a specific model (a super-charged version left to him by a mysterious woman) and his friends, each with their own unique robots, find themselves and their robots involved in a battle to save the world.
D3Publisher (D3P), a publisher and developer of interactive entertainment software, and DreamWorks Animation enter into a worldwide publishing agreement that includes three new animated feature films. The deal grants D3P the license rights to develop and publish video games based on the upcoming DreamWorks Animation movies Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted and Rise of the Guardians and The Croods. Madagascar 3: The Video Game will release in June 2012 to coincide with the movie’s release on June 8, 2012 in North America. Holiday 2012 will see DreamWorks Animation’s release of Rise of the Guardians and the video game, followed by the release of The Croods movie and game in spring 2013. While D3P continues to serve the kid/family video game market, you’ll recall that earlier this month another publisher, THQ, has stepped out of this video game genre.
Cookie Jar Entertainment grants the US home entertainment rights to the new preschool series Ella the Elephant to Warner Home Video (WHV), a division of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. After Disney Junior’s in initial broadcast of the Ella the Elephant episodes, which launches in 2013, Warner Home Video has rights to release it in all home entertainment formats. Kidscreen Summit 2012 is underway here in NYC, where the weather continues to be oddly warm this winter. The mood was positive and exciting this morning as lines formed for badge pickup. It was great to see so many familiar faces today and, of course, meet newcomers of which there seemed to be many. Please come up and say hi. Many people today were chatting about keynote speaker author/ethnographer Simon Sinek’s presentation, Getting to the Golden Circle, focusing on the brain and information, decision making, and smart leaders and their beliefs and choices, and making emotional connections, all of which begin with the essential question Why. Sinek also reminded the crowd of our daunting responsibility to kid viewers, explaining that basically (and this is paraphrased), “if all we are trying to do here is sell things to make money, you will ruin an entire generation.”
