~ 2013 UPFRONTS ~

Oxygen Media hosted its Upfront presentation last night in New York, the first network to unveil its plans for the coming season.  The network, still sporting its “Live Out Loud” branding and boasting it is the youngest skewing women’s network, announced it will expand its schedule of original planning from two to three nights each week. Oxygen Media President Jason Klarman admitted at the party that they’d love to increase their original offerings to five nights a week. “But for now we’re just putting one foot in front of the other,” he said.

The upfront also served as a party for the competition series “The Face” and its partnership with ULTA Beauty and starring supermodels Naomi Campbell, Karolina Kurkova, Coco Rocha and photographer Nigel Barker. It’s this show, said Klarman, that’s most emblematic of Oxygen. “The contestants are authentic and larger than life, just like Naomi. These are women who are going for it, which reflects our audience perfectly.”

The big news for Klarman and many others at NBCUniversal, of course, came yesterday when it was announced that Bonnie Hammer (who was in attendance at the party) was promoted to lead the entire cable entertainment group at NBCU. “I think it makes complete sense to have all the cable properties in the same group,” he said. “It will help power our growth because there will be so many opportunities within the portfolio to leverage content.”

In more Oxygen news: the net has made an exclusive first-look development deal with talk show host Wendy Williams, who offers her talent and creative ideas to the network.  Williams and her production company, Wendy Williams Productions will identify, develop and produce original programming.  She will further serve as an executive producer on Oxygen’s new project in development, Secret Celebrity (wt) in addition to appearing as a guest judge on an episode of The Face, the network’s upcoming model competition series debuting February 12 at 9p.  More details on Oxygen’s new development projects:

  • Secret Celebrity (wt) puts today’s hottest celebrities right out in public anonymously with the use of prosthetic makeup to find out what unsuspecting fans, friends and family really think of them.  Produced by T Group Productions with Jenny Daly, Mike Duffy, Wendy Williams and Gunnar Wetterberg involved as EPs.
  • This Week The Award Goes To… (wt) is a new half-hour pilot for a comedic talk show offering viewers a front row ticket to this over-the-top pop culture show hosted by a yet-to-be named comedian.  Visited by a revolving door of characters and correspondents, the most deserving newsmakers will be celebrated with an award from “Most Eccentric Breakdown” or “Craziest Viral Video” statuettes spotlighting unbelievable, ridiculous and amazing moments in the world of television, online and celebrity gossip.  Produced by JimCo with Jim Biederman, Marla Ratner, Gabe Liedman and Kara Welker as EPs.

Oxygen’s returning series to its lineup includes tattoo competition series Best Ink with new host Pete Wentz; I’m Having Their Baby, the network’s  top-rated show of 2012; along with new competition series The Face and its partnership with ULTA Beauty and starring supermodels Naomi Campbell, Karolina Kurkova, Coco Rocha and photographer Nigel Barker

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

A cadre of notable celebrities will lend their voices to IFC’s upcoming original animated series, Out There premiering February 22 at 1030p with two back-to-back episodes.  The guests include Selma Blair, Jemaine Clement, Nick Offerman, Ellen Page, Stephen Root, Jason Schwartzman, Sarah Silverman and Christian Slater.  The series is created by Ryan Quincy, the two-time Emmy Award winning animation director and producer of South Park.  20th Century Fox Television produces Out There for IFC.

~ RETURNING SERIES ~

A second chilling season of Investigation Discovery’s Dark Minds opens February 27 at 10p.  In each episode, crime author M. William Phelps and criminal profiler John Kelly revisit unsolved homicides believed to be the work of serial killers.  The show then takes a turn, consulting with a murderer currently serving multiple life sentences who goes by the name of “Raven.” The unique source of Raven and his opinions provide unorthodox yet invaluable information for Phelps and Kelly so they can offer law enforcement officials critical leads.  The eight-episode one-hour unscripted series is produced by Beyond Productions for Investigation Discovery.
