Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, February 6, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Mattel invites Creative Artists Agency (CAA) over to play, as the two ink a deal to develop entertainment-based marketing programs and content across multiple platforms (movies, TV, digital, video games etc) based on Mattel’s brands, including Barbie, Hot Wheels, Fisher-Price, Max Steel, UNO and Polly Pocket, among others.  Mattel, which has had great success with its Barbie DVD releases, distributed by Universal Studios Home Entertainment, recently completed a deal with Joel Silver and Warner Bros. to develop a live-action re-envisioned adaptation of its property, He-Man Masters of the Universe.  CAA also has a pact with Hasbro, which yielded success last year with the live-action Transformers movie, and then there is the upcoming live-action G.I. Joe feature (2009) and Transformers 2 (2009).

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Fox is reportedly in talks with Amy Adams to star with Ben Stiller in Night at the Museum 2: Escape From the Smithsonian, per Variety.  Returning to direct the sequel is Shawn Levy, his production company 21 Laps will produce with 1492 Pictures.  Production is slated to begin in Vancouver this spring, with a release date currently set for May 22, 2009.

MORE KIDS STUFF

NOGGIN has picked up the US broadcast rights to the short-form preschool animated series Peppa Pig (52×5) from rights holder Entertainment One.  Peppa Pig initially premiered in the UK on Channel 5 (June 2004), followed by Nick Jr. (UK).  There are currently two seasons of Peppa Pig (100+ episodes), with a third season slated for production in 2008.

DIC Entertainment picks up 26×30 new episodes of Horseland.  Simultaneously the Horseland retail program is set to launch this year in Europe with 20+ licensees in multiple categories signed on.  Additionally, DIC completes a series of new European and Middle East home entertainment deals for Horseland with: CITEL (France, 3Q 2008); Scanbox (Scandinavia, May 2008); Panini (German speaking Europe, March/April 2008); Bridge Entertainment (Dutch speaking Benelux, now); as well as Mirax (Hungary, Romania, the Czech and Slovak Republics, TBD); and Viva Entertainment (Middle East, TBD).  Horseland has been acquired by 20+ countries in the EMEA.

Aiming to teach kids about the fundamentals of finance and budgeting, Minyanville Publishing and Multimedia, a financial media company, and partner Kaboose, a family-targeted online portal, officially launch MinyanLand ( www.minyanland.com), a free virtual community.  The ad-supported site uses characters, games, quizzes, bank accounts, chores, shopping (using virtual money earned by working and investing) and the like, to educate kids about earning, saving, spending and giving.  Parents can participate via weekly virtual allowance.  Minyanville creates the educational content on the site in partnership with the National Council of Economic Education.

Turner Entertainment Holdings Asia Pacific will utilize the social media services of Outblaze to build an interactive community around Cartoon Network’s brands in Asia. Planned properties include blogs, games, instant messaging and a full suite of video creation, editing and sharing capabilities.

MARKETING/LICENSING

BKN New Media, a unit of BKN, has granted Gulliver the master toy license for its property, Zorro  Generation Z.  Under the deal, Gulliver has the rights to produce a range of products, including action figures (all sizes and materials), toy vehicles and accessories, toy weapons and accessories among others.  Gulliver also has the exclusive distribution rights in Brazil, and manufacturing rights globally that allow for BKN to appoint distributors around the world.

Pacific Entertainment Corp., creator/distributor of the Baby Genius music-based toys, names Motta Internacional as the exclusive distributor of Baby Genius products in duty free and domestic retail outlets in Central and South America.  This deal also takes Motta into the new product categories of edutainment DVDs, CDs and learning/developmental toys.

Scholastic Media and Kim Parker Kids have sealed a gift-wrap and stationery deal with All Wrapped Up.  Under the deal, All Wrapped Up will produce a line of stationery, wrapping paper and cards featuring Parker’s designs, which are based on her kid’s book, Counting in the Garden.  The products will be available this year.
