Good morning. It’s Wednesday, February 3, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Early yesterday morning the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for the 82nd Academy Awards. Happily kid/family-targeted animated movies and short films were a big part of the morning! Of the 20 animated movies that qualified for consideration in the Best Animated Feature category, five were selected. One of those movies is the Pixar/Disney feature Up, which received five nods including one in the Best Picture category, becoming only the second animated feature film to be nominated in that category. The first was Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (1991). Other animated movies earning multiple nods include Buena Vista/Disney’s The Princess and the Frog with three nominations and Fox’s Fantastic Mr. Fox with two. Meanwhile, Aardman Animation wins its fifth Oscar nomination for Wallace and Gromit, for Wallace & Gromit in A Matter of Loaf and Death in the Short Film (Animated) category. The Academy Awards will be handed out on Sunday, March 7, 2010 live on ABC (8p) from the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highlight Center, and can be seen live in 200+ countries worldwide. MORE KIDS STUFF
Sprout celebrates Valentine’s Day with the three-hour programming event, Valentine’s Day with Sprout’s Dino-Mite Valentine’s Sing-A-Long, on Sunday, February 14, 12noon-3p. The special holiday block will feature Barney and Dorothy singing songs about love/friendship, holiday-centric crafts, and friendship-themed episodes from both dinosaur preschool series, as well as Valentine’s Day messages from viewers. Sprout will debut the Dorothy the Dinosaur series on Sprout On Demand on March 12. Additionally, Dorothy the Dinosaur returns to the US this summer with The Wiggles on a new musical adventure.
Nickelodeon UK acquires the TV rights to Beyblade: Metal Fusion (51 episodes) from Nelvana Enterprises. The new Beyblade series will launch on NickToons (UK) in September 2010, where it will join other titles in the boy-targeted action block. Beyblade: Metal Fusion is co-produced by Nelvana and d-rights, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation.
Disney XD will debut the second season of the live-action series Aaron Stone debuts with back-to-back episodes on Wednesday, February 24 at 8p and 8:30p. The new episodes feature several new characters, each with their own powers, including Damaged (son of Helix), Mr. Galapagos, Steeltrap, Shackles and Silver. Additionally, DisneyXD.com is launching two new Aaron Stone games, Last Stand (available now) and a second game on February 23. Following the premiere of the new season on TV, full episodes of Aaron Stone will be available via DisneyXD.com, Disney XD VOD, Disney XD Mobile VOD, iTunes and Xbox.
Nick Jr. UK gives its Dora the Explorer and Go, Diego, Go! preschool-aimed sites a digital makeover at www.nickjr.co.uk . Redesigned to be more streamlined and engaging for preschoolers and parents, the new sites are a collaboration between Nickelodeon UK and Complete Control, a kid’s interactive production company. Other properties getting an update this month include Angelina Ballerina and Peppa Pig.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Sesame Workshop launches its Elmo’s Monster Maker app ($3.99) for the iPhone/iPod Touch. The new Elmo app lets kids (OK adults too) create their own monster, email it to friends and even interact with their creation within a live video. Elmo’s Monster Maker app was developed by IDEO, which also created Grover’s Number Special app.
This week marks Scholastic‘s release of the next book in The 39 Clues series, Book 7: The Viper’s Nest by Peter Lerangis. Also debuting this week is The 39 Clues Card Pack 3: The Rise of the Madrigals, a new set of collectible game cards that relate to book 7 and 8, as well as the audio version of The Viper’s Nest, which features bonus material. All in all between the new book and card pack, six new Clues will be revealed. Scholastic Media recently launched The 39 Clues Madrigal Maze app for iPhone/iPod touch, and has teamed with Post Cereals to feature book series in a The 39 Clues Race to Win sweepstakes.
Canada’s Fresh TV names Joy Tashjian Marketing Group (JTMG) as the exclusive licensing agent for its teen-targeted animated comedy series Stoked (26×30). Developed and produced by Fresh TV, Stoked airs weekdays on Cartoon Network (US) and Teletoon (Canada).
Greenzys, a new kid-targeted eco-friendly brand will launch exclusively at FAO Schwarz in NYC and then online at FAO.com on April 5, 2010, just ahead of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22. Created by product designer Lisa Keyser, the Greenzys brand is designed to promote green living and teach eco-friendly practices to kids through of a book by author Danielle Mentzer and illustrator Cris de Lara from DK Publishing, plush character toys by Kids Preferred, a preschool animated series (in development), other animated content, theme song, and Greenzys .com. Debuting next month, the Greenzys theme song is performed by Samia Najimy Finnerty (13), daughter of Kathy Najimy and Dan Finnerty (Dan Band), and accompanied by an animated video. Keyser co-founded Greenzys with mark Lieber, also a founder of Rethink Entertainment and Media. A portion of each Greenzys purchase will benefit the Environmental Media Association.
RATINGS
January was a big month for Nickelodeon and its preschool-targeted Nick Jr. channel:
- Nickelodeon hits a high this January 2010 as the most-watched month among Total Viewers (2.4 million) an increase of +7% vs. last year, in the network’s 30-year history, according to Nielsen Media Research.
- Nick Jr. achieved its most-watched month ever in January with K2-5 (310,000) up by +20%, and Total Viewers (586,000) an increase of +21%.
January was good to Disney XD, which becomes the networks most-watched month ever (including at Toon Disney) in Total Day with K6-11 (104,000) up by +21%, Tweens 9-14 (79,000) increasing +30%, as well as with Total Viewers (273,000) up by +4%.
