Good Morning, it’s Wednesday, February 28, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
NBC has reupped its drama series Las Vegas for a fifth season through 2007-2008. After four years with the show, James Caan will not be returning next season, and neither will Nikki Cox. The casino-based drama has averaged a 2.8/8 among A18-49 during the Friday 9-10p time period. The series is produced by NBC Universal Television Studio and DreamWorks Television.
Tonight’s Premiere:
CW: America’s Next Top Model at 8p
The 79th Annual Academy Awards (830-1159p) averaged 40.2 million total viewers and delivered a 14.1/33 with A18-49, according to final numbers from Nielsen Media Research. This year’s telecast had more total viewers (40.2 million vs. 38.9 million) and higher A18-49 numbers (14.1/33 vs. 13.9/33) than last year. In addition, this year’s Oscars had the highest A18-34 ratings in five years with a 13.0/34. Suppose Ellen had anything to do with that?
Broadcast Evening News Update: ABC kept its momentum last week and finished in first place the second time in three weeks. ABC’s World News with Charles Gibson captured 9.38 million total viewers and a 2.5/9 with A25-54 during the week of February 19. NBC’s Nightly News with Brian Williams was second last week with 9.07 million total viewers and a 2.2/8 A25-54 and CBS’ Evening News with Katie Couric rounded out the threesome with 6.91 million total viewers and a 1.8/7 among A25-54.
Fine Living TV Network will offer its viewers a new category of programming called “time and money” with a new series and specials premiering each month on topics that address ways to save time and money to live a better life. The network’s newest series What’s Your Time Worth? is one example of new programming that falls in this genre.
The nationally syndicated reality series Home Team has been renewed for a third season in the New York and Chicago markets and has been cleared in Los Angeles and upgraded in the Raleigh-Durham market. The weekly hour show, with host Troy McClain, gives the gift of a first home to a deserving family. In New York the show airs on WABC; in Chicago on independent WCIU (WMME digital); on WTVD in Raleigh-Durham beginning this fall; and on KDOC in Los Angeles starting March 10.
The Board of Directors of the CBS Corporation voted to increase the quarterly dividend by 10% from $.20 to $.22 cents per share. The dividend is payable on April 1, 2007 to all stockholders of record as of March 7, 2007. Since becoming a stand-alone company last year, CBS has increased its quarterly dividend by almost 60%. The Board also approved a $1.5 billion share repurchase program which will begin this quarter.
Nothing official from NBC on this one yet, but numerous reports reveal the network is in final negotiations with Victoria Posh Beckham to create a 30m reality show that will chronicle the Beckhams’ move to California. David Beckham, as you are no doubt aware, signed to play for the LA Galaxy soccer team. The project will be produced by 19 Entertainment and is looking at a potential summer launch.
Fox has ordered up a pilot of Skyler’s Revolution, starring comedian Skyler Stone. The show is similar to Candid Camera meets Punk’d, and is from Warner Horizon TV and Wonderland Sound and Vision.
Casting:
- Henry Simmons joins the cast of CBS’ Shark as a regular after his character, Isaac Wright, appeared in a recurring role since the second episode.
- Joining the cast of ABC’s Untitled drama project from Warner Bros. TV, starring Alyssa Milano as an Atlanta lawyer who returns home to Savannah as a single mother, is James Brolin who will play Milano’s father.
- Lucy Liu has been added to the cast of ABC‘s drama pilot Cashmere Mafia from Darren Star Prods and Sony Pictures TV. The pilot also stars Miranda Otto and Frances O’Connor.
Casting Call: Norsemen TV Productions, producers of TLC’s Bringing Home Baby, are looking for soon-to-be-parents who will deliver between March 1 and July 15, 2007. Parents can be married or non-traditional, single, young or old, giving birth, adopting or using a surrogate, but they must live in the Los Angeles area. If interested, contact Pete Brophy at [email protected] (818-753-3128) or Sam Kivi [email protected] (818-753-3129).
Casting Call: The CW’s next reality show Crowned: The Mother of All Pageants from Fox Television Studios is looking nationwide for mother-daughter teams to compete in the eight-episode beauty pageant competition reality series. Previous pageant experience is not necessary but participants must be 18 years or older. Open casting calls will happen in four cities: Orlando – March 3; Raleigh – March 3; Dallas – March 10; and Phoenix/Tempe – March 10. The winning mother-daughter duo will win a cash prize of $100,000 and identical tiaras. For more information and audition requirements and how to submit audition videos, go to The CW Lounge at www.CWTV.com.
MSNBC.com launched FirstPerson, a collaborative outlet users can post news-related stories, videos and photos to. In the way CNN.com’s CNN Exchange tries to harness the power of citizen journalists, FirstPerson is meant to round out developing stories MSNBC.com journalists are tackling. Since soft-launching the feature earlier this month, MSNBC.com says more than 6,000 user-generated entries were added to the site’s NBC Nightly News “Trading Places” feature, a series of ongoing reports about adult children caring for aging parents.
NBC will stream all produced episodes of mid-season series Andy Barker P.I. and the pilot of Raines on NBC.com before they air on television. NBC.com will also put up bonus episodes of Black Donnellys and Andy Barker P.I. as web exclusives. Episodes of Medium and Identity will be added to the site in March, followed by full seasons of the heavily serialized Heroes and Friday Night Lights, beginning with the pilots of each. This will bring NBC.com’s total docket of primetime shows to 13.
NBC Universal‘s newest 24-hour cable network Chiller will launch a companion website Chillertv.com on March 1, the day the channel begins beaming down on DirecTV. The site, produced in partnership with Lionsgate Home Entertainment’s After Dark Horrorfest and Interactive Initiative, is all about scary TV shows and movies. Features will include a custom-built video portal where viewers can sample exclusive video and other additional content from the films featured on Chiller.
IPTV provider Veoh Networks launched the Senator John McCain Channel and is helping the presidential hopeful reach voters virally by syndicating video uploaded to veoh.com to other video sites such as YouTube, Google Video, MySpace and Facebook. The Veoh player allows followers to subscribe to the channel and have all new footage shot from the campaign automatically downloaded to their desktops.
Upon the completion of the pending sale of Univision Communications Inc. to the investor group Broadcasting Media Partners Inc. in March, Joe Uva will be appointed CEO of the network. Joe, who is currently President/CEO of OMD Worldwide, will be based in New York and will assume his new duties the first of April.
Gregory Madsen has been hired by Gospel Music Channel to be the Director/Affiliate Sales, Southeast Region. Gregory is charged with establishing distribution in the Southeastern states that include Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.
City Lights Media Group has made Mark Ragone its EVP/Business Affairs, to lead the business affairs for all of the company’s divisions. He will work closely with Danny Fisher, CEO, on the purchase, production and distribution of content and business development functions.
The Nielsen Company has promoted Cheryl Pearson-McNeil to SVP/Communications, ACNielsen U.S. Cheryl will take on this new position effective March 5 and she will manage communications efforts for ACNielsen and The Nielsen Company’s Advisory Services businesses throughout the U.S.
Marc Barson has been named Deputy General Counsel for Starz Media to provide oversight for the daily legal and business affairs issues on behalf of the company. Marc will also retain his title of VP/Business Affairs, Production for Starz Entertainment. Based at the company’s Burbank offices, Marc will report to Steve Beabout, General Counsel, Starz Media.
