Cynopsis: Sports
02.27.13

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, February 27, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

A potential battle of behemoths is expected to be avoided with the AP reporting that the Oscars are likely to move away from the 2014 Winter Games, which will occupy most of February next year. The motion picture academy and ABC dodged the Winter Games in both 2006 and 2010 by pushing the show to March. The Screen Actors Guild and Producers Guild of America have already announced that they’re moving up their 2014 ceremonies to Martin Luther King weekend on Jan. 18 and 19 respectively to avoid the one-two punch of the Winter Olympics as well as the Super Bowl on Feb. 2.

On the Air

The news keeps getting better for FOX Sports and NASCAR. Fast national ratings for Sunday’s Daytona 500 drew a 9.9/22 rating/share and averaged 16.7 million viewers according to Nielsen. That ranks as the highest-rated and most-watched Daytona 500 since 2008 (10.2/20, 17.8 million viewers) and marks a 24% ratings gain over last year (8.0/14), and a 22% rise in average viewership (13.7 million). Overall, an estimated 31.6 million Americans watched at least part of Sunday’s Great American Race.

The Dodgers are looking to televise games in three languages next season, when the team’s new contract with Time Warner kicks in, according to the LA Times. With telecasts in English, Spanish and Korean, that would make the club the first MLB team with regular telecasts in three languages.

NFL Network will air The Rich Eisen Combine Special tonight at 9:30p, which will feature Ravens’ Super Bowl XLVII Champion Ed Reed on the Oscars red carpet and interviewing the likes of George Clooney. The one hour special will also include interviews from the NFL Scouting Combine with Denver Broncos executive Vice President John Elway, St. Louis Rams head coach Jeff Fisher and Indianapolis Colts head coach Chuck Pagano.

The March 1 edition of ESPN’s Friday Night Fights presented by Corona Extra will feature an IBF Title fight between Featherweight titlist Billy “The Kid” Dib (35-1, 1 NC, 21 KOs) squaring off against undefeated challenger Evgeny “The Mexican Russian” Gradovich (15-0, 8 KOs) in the 12-round main event. Coverage starts at 9p on ESPN2. The card is co-promoted by DiBella Entertainment and SMS Promotions, owned by multiplatinum recording artist and entrepreneur 50 Cent.

Following the accident in the final lap of Saturday’s Nationwide Series that injured fans, Nielsen reports that SPEED Center earned its highest rating ever in show history with a 0.95 and 1,107,000 viewers for its coverage of the aftermath for SPEED. The show made its first post-accident cut-in at approximately 4:45p during a replay of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series final practice.

ESPN2 and ESPN3 are offering the BNP Paribas Showdown 2013 from Madison Square Garden in New York on Monday featuring a US Open rematch between Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka followed by Rafael Nadal taking on Juan Martin Del Potro. ESPN3 will begin coverage at 7p with ESPN2 joining at 9p. Chris Fowler will call the matches with Cliff Drysdale, Mary Joe Fernandez and Patrick McEnroe.

Time Warner Cable SportsNet revealed the channel’s LA Galaxy programming plans for the new season. Coverage will include pre- and post-game Access SportsNet: Galaxy, the documentary series Backstage: Galaxy, classic Timeless Galaxy games and more.

ESPN Deportes Radio Nueva York 1050AM and M&E Productions locked in a deal to broadcast New York Red Bulls matches beginning with the new season. Broadcasts of the matches include 30-minute pre and post shows with commentary, analysis and interviews with the most renowned players before and after each event.

After making headlines for her performance at UFC last weekend, fighter Ronda Rousey is reportedly set to participate in The Hunger Games. Dave Meltzer reports that the fighter has been offered a role in one of the sequels, likely starting with the third movie.

Save the date for the Cynopsis: Sports Media Awards. This year’s honors will be held on April 17 at Yale Club in Manhattan. Join us as we honor the best of 2012!

The Brewers are continuing their longtime relationship with Miller beer, locking in a renewal that keeps Miller Lite as the team’s exclusive beer sponsor for the near future. Deal points include TV and radio spots on Brewers broadcasts, in-stadium signage, and exclusive consumer promotions.

AJ Foyt Racing and ABC Supply Co. Inc. have extended their long-running relationship via a new contract that runs through the 2015 season. The extension will mark the 11th straight season the company has supported A.J. Foyt’s IndyCar racing team.

The British Basketball Association is opening offices in lower Manhattan in a move to create a presence in the United States. The league will look to showcase British players alongside international basketball talent with the goal of launching full league operations in November 2014 in Europe. As such, the league is now hunting for investors and franchise partners to participate in the growth of the sport through equity ownership.
