CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

02/23/05

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, February 23, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Fox won the night according to fast affiliate ratings on Monday evening with a 7.7/18 A18-49 according to Nielsen Media Research data.  CBS was #2 overall with a 5.2/12, followed by NBC 4.6/11, ABC 3.8/9, WB 1.9/4, UPN 1.4/3.   American Idol at 8pm drew an enormous 9.8/23 – the closest competitor being Fear Factor on NBC with a 3.6/9.  At 9p CBS and Fox with “24” tied, each delivering a 5.6/12 for the hour. For CBS, the last half hour was the first half hour of a special 90m edition of CSI: Miami which averaged a 6.6/15 for the full 90m broadcast.  Medium of NBC was #2 at 10p with a 5.4/13.  Cuts, UPN newest sitcom, airs at 830p and on Monday night held 100% of its lead-in, delivering a 1.2/3 for the time period.

Reminder – WB’s Everwood has gone on hiatus after last Monday night’s ep, and Summerland steps in with new eps starting Feb 28.  Everwood returns to the schedule on April 18.

Casting / Development / Production:

  • After ABC decided not to go forward with its pilot project In the Game, Jennifer Love Hewitt bounces back and is cast in the untitled CBS drama pilot based on the work of psychic James Van Praagh, from Touchstone TV. The casting of Hewitt in the lead role lifts the cast-contingency off the project.  Hewitt plays a psychic.
  • Elsewhere at CBS, the net has cast former Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek in its comedy pilot Three (Paramount Network TV) about a newlywed couple (Van Der Beek is the husband), and their friend who just went through a divorce.
  • ABC has added two more to its cast of What About Brian? (Touchstone TV/Bad Robot) – Barry Watson and Rosanna Arquette.  Watson will play the title character Brian, a 30-something guy and the only one left single in his circle of friends.  Arquette will play his older sister. Other cast members to date include Rick Gomez, Raoul Bova, Amanda Detmar.
  • Also at ABC, for its pilot project Introducing Lennie Rose (Touchstone TV), Aya Sumika has been cast as one of the friends in this ensemble show about a group of 20-somethings living in NYC.
  • WB is moving forward with a new project called Mobile Home Disasters (Renegade 83/Nu-Opp) with host Bill Engvall, per Variety.  Think Extreme Makeover: Home Edition for mobile homes.  Billed as a show with blue collar sensibilities, the design team and host arrive at a mobile home in need of fixing up, and in keeping with the homeowner’s ideas of what is cool and what would make their home the best place on earth, the design team sets upon making those ideas come true.
  • NBC has added to its comedy project pilot My Name is Earl (20th) with the casting of Ethan Suplee, Nadine Velaquez and Eddie Steeples.  My Name is Earl is about a guy who wins big at lotto, and vows to turn his life around and make amends to all he has mistreated.
  • Also at NBC, JP Manoux has been cast in the comedy pilot Dante (20th) about an arrogant NFL Superstar who is confidentially scared to death he’ll lose his job at any moment.  Manoux will play the owner of the NFL club, the L.A. Quakes.
  • UPN has cast Denise Richards in its dramedy pilot Wildlife (Paramount Network TV/Axelrod Edwards Co.), an ensemble comedy/drama about a group of friends living in a hot Hollywood neighborhood. The pilot will be directed by David Straiton.
  • FX has ordered a second season of its up-close-and-personal series NASCAR Drivers: 360, with the new season set to kick off on May 13 after FX’s coverage of the NASCAR Busch Series Racing.

20th Television has cleared A Current Affair in 50% of the country, including the three most recent clearances – KPIX/San Francisco; KVVU/Las Vegas and WRAZ/Raleigh.  The 30m strip series debuts on the Fox O&O stations this spring, and these three new stations may begin airing it as early as this summer.

Dr. Phil (distributed by King World) will be switching stations in Los Angeles a year early than previously anticipated.  Dr. Phil currently airs on KNBC at 4pm and has been picked up by KCBS beginning in 2006.  According to the Hollywood Reporter, KNBC has confirmed it has picked up The Suze Orman Show (distributed by 20th Television) and plans to air it at 4pm beginning this fall.  That frees up Dr. Phil to launch on KCBS in September 2005.  Dr. Phil’s time period on KCBS has not been announced as yet.

Announcing the terms of their separation agreement, News Corp. and Cablevision have laid out their plans for splitting up the family assets – Regional Programming Partners.  Regional Programming Partners includes the New York Knicks, the New York Rangers (not much more than a pile of pucks at the moment), Madison Square Garden, Radio City Entertainment, regional sports channels in four states and Fox Sports Net.  Up to now, News Corp has owned 40% of Regional Programming Partners, with Cablevision owning the remaining 60%.  Under the agreement, News Corp. will have full ownership of Fox Sports Net, the regional Fox Sports Net channels in Florida and Ohio, and National Advertising Partners, an ad sales arm to FSN. Cablevision walks away with Madison Square Garden and MSG Network, the two sports teams, Radio City, and the regional Fox Sports Net channels in NY and Chicago.  The one asset the two will continue to co-own is Fox Sport Net Bay Area regional net, which the two split 60% Cablevision/40% News Corp.

ImaginAsian TV has appointed Charles Hendrickson to the position of Chief Financial Officer.  The announcement was made by Michael Hong, CEO of ImaginAsian Entertainment, Inc.    Charles will oversee all of the company’s financial activities, and will be based in New York.

Univision Communications Inc. announced Alina Falcon has been upped to EVP/Operating Manager of the Univision Network, effective immediately. Alina will be responsible for all operations, including programming, promotions, talent relations, technical operations and news for the Univision Network.  Based in Miami, Alina will report to Ray Rodriguez, Pres/COO.

Sandy Alouete has been promoted to VP/Music & Talent Relations for VH1, reporting to Rick Krim, EVP/Music & Talent, VH1. Sandy will be the department’s primary liaison with VH1’s marketing, on-air promotions, program enterprises and news departments. She will also work closely with the newly created music marketing group.
