Good morning. It’s Wednesday, February 21, 2007 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
HBO has inked a deal with Mattel’s American Girl division to produce feature films, TV series, specials and documentaries, according to Variety. Under the deal HBO and New Line Cinema’s co-venture, Picturehouse, will release the first live-action American Girl feature film. As previously announced Goldsmith-Thomas Productions and Julia Roberts’ Red Om Films will produce an American Girl movie featuring the Kit Kittredge character. Walden Media, which had been involved with the financing for the American Girl movie is not involved with the project anymore.
Explorer, author and wilderness educator Josh Bernstein has inked an exclusive deal with Discovery Communications to join the Discovery Channel as of April 2007. Under the agreement Bernstein will create, host and executive produce specials and series focusing on a range of topics (e.g. the environment, archaeology) exclusively for Discovery Channel. You may remember Bernstein as the host of Digging for the Truth on The History Channel. For the last 20-years Bernstein has served as President & CEO of BOSS, the Boulder Outdoor Survival School. All in all he seems like a pretty cool guy and he was added to our family list of people to meet after my kids and I watched an episode of Digging. Mind you our list is long and far reaching.
MORE KIDS STUFF
NBA star LeBron James (forward-Cleveland Cavaliers) and MSN have teamed to launch LeBron.msn.com, an interactive website. Targeted to kids and teens, the website encourages them to work toward their goals and get them involved in their communities. The site features a pop-up book that lets visitors move through LeBron’s early life, showing the importance of schoolwork, his family and friends as well as his drive to play basketball and his current participation in his community. Like traditional pop-up books users can move tabs like locker doors, time-line wheel and others to opening new areas that include additional photos, information and ideas, quizzes, games, a forum, contests, and an area that highlights individual real kids and lots of encouragement and messaging from LeBron. The site will get new content of all sorts moving forward. LRMR Marketing is a partner in the site.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Genius Products, LLC, The Weinstein Company and Sesame Workshop have completed a long-term distribution and co-production deal. Under the terms of the deal, Genius will serve as the exclusive North American home entertainment distributor for Sesame Workshop’s library, which includes 100+ titles. Genius will hold home video and certain digital distribution rights for the length of the agreement. Together Genius Products, Inc. and The Weinstein Company Holdings LLC own Genius Products, LLC.
Half-Pint and Nellie Oleson hold on to your bonnets! Lionsgate will reissue Little House on the Prairie on DVD beginning this April 2007. Lionsgate obtained the exclusive US home entertainment distribution rights for the entire Little House TV series (208 episodes) as part of its new partnership with Imavision Distribution, Inc. Little House aired on NBC from 1974-1983. Under the agreement Lionsgate has been granted the exclusive US home entertainment distribution rights to Imavision’s US library of 30+ US TV titles, which also includes Jerry Springer Uncut, Game Show Moments Gone Bananas!, as well as a series of Spanish language telenovelas.
Produce for Better Health Foundation (PBH) will launch Fruits & Veggies – More Matters, its new healthy lifestyle initiative and brand identity, in March 2007 around the country. Supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the More Matters effort will feature a full marketing campaign and consumer website that will feature recipes, shopping and meal planning advice for parents on putting fruits and veggies into the family diet. There will also be an specifically for kid that will feature activities and games and ways to get kids interested in shopping and cooking healthy meals. Organizations partnering with the PBH and CDC to support the More Matters initiative include, the American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Association and American Heart Association. a nonprofit organization, PBH is best known for the 5 A Day for Better Health campaign it launched 15 years ago.
