Cynopsis: DIGITAL
02/01/12

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, February 1, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis editions online, click here.

Thanks to revenue generated from Hulu Plus, Hulu pays more fees per user, per content, than any of its other competitors, including Netflix, said Hulu CEO Jason Kilar at AllThingsD’s Dive into Media conference. In the interview, Kilar was asked how much the company would spend toward original programming in 2012. Hulu had previously announced that it would invest $500 million on content during this year. Kilar answered that most of the $500 million will be invested in existing content (paying licensing fees to TV networks and other partners). However, he also noted, “it’s important to have some exclusive content.” When asked if he will still be at the helm of Hulu a year from now after a bumpy 2011, which included a failed attempt to sell the company, Kilar deferred to his track record of only working for two organizations (Amazon and Hulu) since graduating. A video of his interview can be found here.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Crackle, Sony Pictures’ multi-platform video service, has officially launched for the Xbox Live as a free (ad-supported) full-length movie and TV app. It is available via the Xbox Live marketplace in the U.S., U.K., Canada and Australia. In addition, its compatibility with Microsoft’s Kinect offering enables voice- and motion-activated navigation on the app. As is the case with other content offerings on Microsoft’s gaming console, an Xbox Live Gold membership is required for free access to the app. Crackle’s digital library consists of over 200 movie titles (Talladega Nights, Groundhog Day, The International) and over 1,500 TV episodes from a wide array of shows (Seinfeld, Bewitched, NewsRadio).

Thought Equity Motion, a provider of cloud-based video management services, has extended its exclusive digital licensing contract with the NCAA. Per the agreement, in addition to owning licensing rights to NCAA Championship videos, Thought Equity now also has the rights to license photographs and radio calls from the NCAA’s 89 championships across 23 sports and all three division levels. “Our platform’s ‘smart content’ metadata makes digital media easily searchable and our research and project services deliver a strategic content and technology offering for NCAA partners around the 2012 championships,” said Kevin Schaff, CEO and founder of Thought Equity.

In other news out of AllThingsD’s D: Dive into Media conference, Martha Stewart said her company, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, is making its way toward becoming a digital media company. “We are relentless in serving our customers where they need us,” said Stewart. To that end, Stewart discussed how Martha Stewart Living and Everyday Food have already gone digital, with Martha Stewart Weddings and Whole Living set to add digital editions this coming spring.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) has raised $1.5 billion for its Fund III, all capital intended for future venture investments. “Fund III is all about extending our capabilities to more disruptors and pioneers. We’re remaking the modern venture capital firm,” said a16z co-founder and general partner, Ben Horowitz. To-date, the VC firm has raised a total of $2.7 billion since it was founded in June of 2009. Its portfolio of start-ups in which it has already invested includes Airbnb, Facebook, Pinterest and Zynga.

Synacor, a provider of TV Everywhere services, as well as other web services for cable and telecom companies, says it expects to raise $94 million for an initial public offering, priced between $10 and $12 a share. This is actually an increase from the $75 million the company originally anticipated it would raise when it filed its S-1 in November of 2011. Synacor’s two biggest clients are Charter Communications and CenturyLink; both companies have been responsible for over 60% of Synacor’s yearly revenues from 2008 to 2010, according to its IPO filing. The filing also revealed Synacor’s purchase of Carbyn, a builder of a cloud-based HTML5 operating system, which Synacor will use to give its customers access to an array of web services from any browser on any device. Underwriters on the IPO include BofA Merrill Lynch, Citigroup and Stifel Nicolaus Weisel.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

eXelate has announced a partnership with Nielsen Catalina Solutions, a provider of advertising performance data to consumer packages goods (CPG) marketers, in order to help CPG marketers reach consumers with more relevant digital advertising based on in-store purchasing behavior. The partnership will expand Nielsen Catalina Solutions’ digital reach by tapping eXelate’s data cloud to power audience optimization and ROI measurement capabilities to a select list of online media partners. eXelate’s data cloud delivers marketing insights on more than 300 million global unique users. The company drives 60 billion privacy-compliant data transactions for 200 media companies every month. This deal is an extension of a previous partnership between the two companies, in which Nielsen brought its anonymous offline segmentation data into eXelate’s data platform.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

Per a new eMarketer forecast, Twitter’s ad revenue will grow 83% in 2012, reaching nearly $260 million globally by the end of the year. Even though it expects the social network’s ad revenue growth to taper off over the next three years, eMarketer still predicts Twitter’s ad revenues to reach $540 million by 2014. 90% of Twitter’s revenues currently come from U.S. sources. That number is expected to fall to 83% by 2014. Comparatively speaking, LinkedIn pulls in a greater share of ad dollars from outside the U.S. In 2012, the social network for professionals will generate $226 million in ad revenues, up 46.1% over 2011, with 32% of revenues coming from other countries. Via the same forecast model, LinkedIn’s ad revenues are expected to grow to $405.6 million by 2014, 40% of which will come from abroad.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Apple’s latest update for Final Cut Pro X includes multi-camera editing and enhanced chroma-key (green screen) support. The multi-cam editing feature, which was available in prior incarnations of FCP as far back as 2005, was removed in the most recent overhaul of the editing software. In the new version, it supports up to 64 different camera angles, as well as video and still photos at any resolution, frame rate and format supported by the software, according to CNET. The improvement to the chroma-key feature is designed to make the process of replacing the green or blue screen with your preferred background image faster. The update is available to FCP X users in the Mac App Store, and will be offered as standard in the free trial version of the software in September.

mtvU has launched a $10,000 “Against Our Will Challenge” as part of the 24-hour college network’s “Against Our Will Campaign” that seeks to empower students in fighting and ending modern-day slavery. Coordinated in conjunction with LexisNexis, the “Challenge” is a call for students to imagine and propose digital tools and products that can raise awareness of, and encourage action to help stop, modern-day slavery. The winning student (or a team of up to 5) will receive $10,000, and the chance to work with mtvU and LexisNexis in developing their proposal. For examples of what mtvU means by digital tools, which can be among other things, a game, a social media widget or a text service, visit the competition’s official page. This venture comes on the heels of mtvU’s “Slavery Footprint Campus Challenge,” which encouraged college students to use Slavery Footprint’s mobile app to check-in to stores and restaurants as a way to tell brands and business owners that they want slave-free products. Won by Georgia Southern University, the campaign generated almost 15,000 actions.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Gabe Vehovsky will lead the newly formed Digital Strategy & Emerging Businesses team at Discovery Communications in the role of Executive Vice President for that unit. The team will be charged with identifying, fostering and developing new digital businesses that will “delight audiences and increase viewer engagement across platforms,” and in which Discovery can invest. The unit will work in conjunction with the other leadership at Discovery. Vehovsky was most recently EVP of digital media strategy and client solutions at Discovery.

Horn Group has promoted Ben Billingsley to Partner. At his new seat, he will be responsible for leading and managing all aspects of the firm’s New York office. With the digital communications agency since 2006, Billingsley has been instrumental in Horn Group’s digital media practice and has worked on campaigns with the likes of NBC, Gannett and the New York Times. He has also helped in the launch of numerous tech companies, including Auditude, Right Media, Associated Content, Adify and Answers.com. Billingsley will report directly to Horn Group founder and CEO, Sabrina Horn.

BUZZMEDIA has hired Michael Ziegler to be the digital media company’s new Senior Vice President of Sales. He will oversee the company’s Eastern and Midwestern sales teams, while also contributing to the development and implementation of BUZZMEDIA’s sales and marketing initiatives. In announcing the hire, Doug Rohrer, the company’s CRO, said BUZZMEDIA expects to double its growth for the fourth consecutive year. It currently attracts more than 100 million monthly unique visitors across its network of over 35 online media brands.

Business audience marketing company Bizo has appointed Frannie Danzinger to Director of Marketplace Development. In her new role, she will lead the company’s strategic account development and media strategies. Danzinger joins Bizo at a time of significant growth; the company announced it ended 2011 with an annual run rate of over $18 million, which is a fourth quarter increase of 133% year-over-year, and Bizo’s sixth consecutive month of growth. Over 400 brands use the Bizo platform to target audiences online, including AMEX, Microsoft and FedEx. Bizo has also made additions to its list of publishing partners to include Forbes, PC World, Thomson Reuters and many more.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

The Timeline Movie Maker from Definition 6 allows people to view some of their important Facebook Timeline content via a chronological, one-minute video. The Movie Maker does pretty much all of the work, it evaluates the content you have shared with friends on the social network, identifies which content has been the most engaging and relevant and then builds the video. It will initially be available in four languages (English, French, Spanish and German), and will offer up to five different soundtracks from which users can choose for their personalized movie. It’s a one-click curation process; however, you will also have the option to edit you movie after the service generates the “first cut.” If you have enabled Timeline on Facebook, check it out, it’s pretty cool.
