Good morning. It’s Wednesday, February 1, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
As you know, UPN and WB will be no more in September. Despite knowing the clock is ticking, the WB has announced a handful of new programs and changes to the schedule:
- Bedford Diaries kicks off on March 22 at 9p
- Pepper Dennis joins the schedule on April 4 at 9p, after Gilmore Girls, with reruns of Pepper scheduled for Sundays at 9 as of April 9
- Supernatural will move to Thursdays as of March 16 at 9p
- Everwood returns on Monday, March 20 with a 2-hour episode, and then falls into its original 9p time period the following week (Related is sidelined for the time being, but is expected to return)
*MORE GOOD STUFF*ABC World News Tonight anchor Bob Woodruff and cameraman Doug Vogt are back on US soil. Both arrived yesterday and both continue to show improvement. Meanwhile, rather than leaving Elizabeth Vargas to anchor on her own, ABC will sub Woodruff with Charles Gibson and Diane Sawyer. Each will alternate with Vargas, according to The New York Times. The Times also says there are other journalists who will sub, but didn’t mention names. ABC will likely put out that information later on today.
A&E‘s Monday night original movie Flight 93 delivered a record high number of viewers – 5.9 million total viewers, and 2.7 million Adults 18-49 tuned in to watch the story based on United Flight 93 that went down on September 11, but not without a fight from its passengers.
Perhaps you were one of the few who watched NBC‘s Friday night series The Book of Daniel, and wish it hadn’t been pulled from the schedule. Well, good news for you! The NBC website is offering three unseen episodes, via streaming video, and totally free. The first one is available now thru Friday, with a new episode available this Friday at 8p, and again next Friday.
TLC will premiere its new 20-episode series Little People, Big World on March 4 at 8p. The show follows the Roloff family – a family of both little and average size people. Mom and Dad are little people, with children both little and average sized. Over the course of six months, cameras capture their everyday successes and struggles, presenting an intimate view of life as a little person. TLC will air two half-hour episodes back to back on Saturday nights.
Coming up this “semester” on mtvU are a handful of new series, several returning and a slew of music based specials and series:
- mtvU Student Development Deals gives “development deals” to stand-out students who have submitted material for any of the mtvU student-based series or competition.
- Breaking the Video puts the cameras into college students’ hands as they produce and direct music videos for hot emerging acts. Each video – along with a special behind-the-scenes “making of”, will premiere exclusively on mtvU and mtvU Über. The first episode features college favorite O.A.R. , produced by students at Columbia University. Episode two features students from Brooklyn College creating a video for breakout artist Damone. The series is exec produced by acclaimed video director Justin Francis of “The Saline Project”, who also serves as mentor.
- Other series returning this semester: Does This Look Infected, Fresh Produce, Quad Squads, and The Opening.
From the music end, a bunch of stuff:
- mtvU Freshman Five where a group of five college students bi-annually chose the five emerging music artists, each of whom will then be featured in a weekly series called The Freshman.
- 2006 Best Music on Campus Contest, the search for America’s most outstanding college artists.
- Returning: Campus Invasion ’06 Tour, Spring Break 2006 (March 5-19), and Take Action Tour 2006.
Check out www.mtvu.com for more info.
Note to self: This sounds pretty cool – think about Tivo-ing: 90m film documenting the making of a Bob Dylan album. Called Gotta Serve Somebody: The Gospels of Bob Dylan, airs on the Gospel Music Channel on February 5 at 830p.

* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *Fox has given the pilot order to American Crime from Bruckheimer TV and Warner Bros. TV. This project is about a group of LA-based lawyers who handle the high-profile cases, according to Variety.
Casting Notes:
- ABC has cast Anthony Stewart Head in the lead of Him & Us, the comedy pilot inspired in part on the life of Elton John.
- CBS‘ untitled legal drama project about a group of associates in a D.C. lawfirm who battle various ethical and moral issues along with legal issues, has cast Joshua Jackson as one of the associates. His character’s first big case is working with a death row inmate, per Hollywood Reporter.
- Filling in on Law & Order: SVU for Mariska Hargitay while she is on maternity leave, will be Connie Nielsen. Detective Bensen will be away on “special assignment”, and temporarily filling in for six episodes will be Nielsen.
