Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, February 17, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Building a movie from the ground up, Erector Set heads to the movies as Helix Films, an indie production company, connects with Meccano Toy Company to develop a 3D fantasy/adventure feature film based on the popular Erector Set construction toy brand.  Helix is already at working on a family-centric original script and aims to create a film franchise based on the toy that could also include a TV series and video games.  The financial terms of the deal were not announced.

Breakthrough Films & Television, Martomagic and PPI Worldwide Group partnering to develop a TV series for the collectible toy, Gogo’s Crazy Bones.  Each Gogo’s Crazy Bones (there are hundreds in various colors) has its own personality, strength, and score, and they are available in three packs, five packs and collector tins.  Gogo’s Crazy Bones is a Bulldog Licensing Ltd property owned by Spain’s Martomagic and PPI Worldwide Group. Joy Tashjian Marketing Group is the North American licensing agent for the brand.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon names Kevin James as the host of Nickelodeon’s 23rd Annual Kids’ Choice Awards and reveals nominees, which will air live from UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion on Saturday, March 27, 8-9:30p.  Leading the way in the movie category this year is The Twilight Saga: New Moon with five nominations, followed by Monsters vs. Aliens and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen with three nods each.  Elsewhere Miley Cyrus earns four nominations, while the brother teams, Jonas and Sprouse, each collectively got three nods apiece.  Making their first appearance as Kids’ Choice nominees are President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama in the new category, wait for it, Cutest Couple.  But, the Obama’s have some mighty competition in this category going up against Twilight couples Kristen Stewart/Rob Pattinson, Kristen Stewart/Taylor Lautner and Avatar’s Zoe Saldana/Sam Worthington.  Some of the other Kids’ Choice Awards categories and nominees include:

Scholastic teams with Tales2Go, a new kid-centric subscription audio book application for iPhones/iPod Touch, to include Scholastic Audio titles available via the Tales2Go service.  Scholastic Audio books that will be available on Tales2Go include Clifford The Big Red Dog and Goosebumps titles.  Tales2Go plans to roll out Blackberry, Palm Pre and Android versions of the app in the coming months.

Little Airplane Productions will premiere its new preschool animated property, Small Potatoes, with the short film Imagination (Give it a Try) at the 12th annual BAMkids Film Festival in Brooklyn later this month.  Small Potatoes is a music-based revolves around four animated spuds (Home Fry, Olaf, Ruby and Nate) that sing and dance in celebration of imagination and music appreciation.  Each of the Small Potatoes short films features a different original song in a different musical style.  The screenings will be followed by a Q&A session with Little Airplane founder/president Josh Selig.  BAMkids Film Festival is presented in association with the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival.  Additionally, Little Airplane has teamed with Scrollmotion to make Small Potatoes film available as an eight page musical story to iPhone ebook.

The New York International Children’s Film Festival (NYICFF) is set to kick off its 13th season February 26-March 21, 2010 at six NYC locations ( www.gkids.tv/intheaters.com ).  Targeted to kids/teens 3-18, NYICFF will present 100 new films from around the world, as well as director Q&As, NYICFF’s short films programs, workshops, a benefit event, a French animation retrospective, audience voting and an awards ceremony.  NYICFF’s national theatrical distribution arm, GKids, distributes a selection of films as well as the Best of the Fest nationwide.  For more information about the NYICFF, and a chance for kids/teens/adults to view, review and vote, go to www.gkids.tv .

Puffin, a kid imprint of Penguin Books, acquires two fantasy novels in the new book series Wereworld by British author/illustrator Curtis Jobling (creator Frankenstein’s Cat, designer Bob the Builder) in a five-figure deal, the terms of which were not disclosed.  The first two Wereworld titles are set for publication in 2011 and 2012 respectively.  Targeted to K10+, the Wereworld story follows the adventures of Drew (15), a shepherd’s son, as he discovers he’s the last in the line of Werewolves, and the reluctant ruler of the land of Lyssia, where Werelords reign.

Tori Spelling first kid’s book, Presenting  … Tallulah, will be published by Aladdin, which is an imprint of Simon & Schuster, on September 21, 2010.  Loosely based on Spelling’s childhood experiences Presenting … Tallulah revolves around a young girl who is trying to figure out who she is and move away from all the people telling her what she can’t or shouldn’t do.  The book features illustrations by Vanessa Brantley Newton. While this is Spelling’s first book for kids, she has previously penned two adult books (Mommywood, sTORI), with the third, tentatively titled uncharted terriTORI, will be published in June 2010.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Scholastic Media finalizes new licensing deals for its Scholastic and Little Scholastic brands with Kids Station Toys and Tara Toy Corporation to develop new toy products for infants, toddlers and school-aged kids.  The deal will see Kids Station Toys create toy lines for both the Scholastic and Little Scholastic brands in three categories, electronic learning aids, role-play toys and science and exploration products, for infants-8-year-olds. The line will include cameras, electronic dictionaries, science kits and binoculars.  Adding to its Scholastic brand line-up, Tara Toy Corporation will create a full line of craft and activity kits including paper bag puppets, tissue paper art and milk carton projects ($5.99-$9.99).  Toys for both brands are slated to available at retail this year.

Walmart stores will launch the new toy line for DreamWorks Animation‘s 3D CG animated movie How To Train Your Dragon at its stores on March 1, just ahead of the movie’s release on March 26, 2010.  Created by Spin Master, the toy line features a collection of action figures and action dragons, Viking play sets, and role-play toys based on the movie.  The movie is based on author Cressida Cowell’s book How To Train Your Dragon.

MGA Entertainment will launch its Boy6+ targeted fantasy property The Legend of Nara this fall 2010.  MGA is showcasing the property at Toy Industry Association’s Toy Fair 2010 in NYC this week.  The Legend of Nara is a collection of collectible mythical insects that are motorized and feature removable chassis to mix and match and swap with friends.

American Greetings Properties (AGP) appoints Starbright SRL to serve as licensing agent in Italy for American Greetings’ properties Care Bears and Twisted Whiskers.  Starbright plans to develop a full licensing program throughout Italy.
