Good morning. It’s Wednesday, February 15, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.
Nickelodeon will premiere its new live-action comedy series, Fred: The Show on Monday, February 20, at 8p, with back-to-back 11-minute episodes. Created by and starring Lucas Cruikshank, Fred: The Show follows the character on his latest adventures at home and in school. Following the premiere, the show will air regularly on Nickelodeon, Fridays at 8p beginning February 24. Cruikshank also executive produces the new series. Brian Robbins and Sharla Sumpter Bridgett of Varsity Pictures and Gary Binkow and Evan Weiss of The Collective also serve as executive producers on the series.
Disney Consumer Products (DCP) unveils a collection of 130+ toys based on by four Disney Junior series this week at Toy Fair, which included special guest appearances by Sharon Osbourne and David Arquette, the voices of Mama Hook and Skully on the preschool series Jake and the Never Land Pirates. The new product are inspired by the series Jake and the Never Land Pirates, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Minnie’s Bow-Toons, and the new animated Doc McStuffins, which revolves around a six-year-old girl who heals toys and stuffed animals out of her backyard clinic. Designed to encourage imaginative play the new Disney Junior toy line features: colorful play sets, figures and feature plush from Fisher Price; role play sets, accessories, plush and dolls from Just Play; interactive board games from Wonder Forge; kid’s electronics from VTech; ride-ons from Kiddieland; and bikes and scooters from Huffy, among other products. Disney Junior, a popular preschool programming block on Disney Channel that will also launch as a 24-hour channel on Friday, March 23, 2012. The Disney Junior block will continue run on Disney Channel.
Nickelodeon is at Toy Fair this week, showcasing its new and biggest toy portfolio ever, which of course is based on its popular brands for preschoolers, kids, and tweens. Nickelodeon is unveiling products with its licensing partners for both new and established properties, including:
- Playmates Toys is showing a new line of toys inspired by Nickelodeon’s new CG-animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT). Playmates Toys, which has been TMNT toy partner over the last two decades, this year’s lineup includes basic, deluxe, and collectible action figures, as well as Ninja gear, playsets, and vehicles. Produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studio in Burbank, the series is set to premiere in fall 2012.
- Jakks Pacific and its Creative Designs International (CDI) and Disguise Halloween divisions will debut a new line of dolls, playsets, accessories, dress-up, role play items (dresses and fairy wings) and Halloween costumes based Winx Club, an animated fantasy adventure series about six best friends at the finest fairy school in all the realms. The product lines are slated to launch in fall 2012 to coincide with the premiere of the brand new CG episodes of Winx Club on Nickelodeon. Winx Club is a co-production with Rainbow and Nickelodeon.
- Nickelodeon and Fisher-Price introduce new toy lines for the popular preschool properties Team Umizoomi and Dora the Explorer. This is the first toy line for Team Umizoomi, which will incorporate characters and math elements. Team Umizoomi products from Fisher-Price include figures, basic and learning plush, bath toys, and vehicles. Fisher-Price will introduce its new Dora-inspired toys this year including a dollhouse, playsets, dolls, role play toys, among others.
- Fisher-Price’s Imaginext brand debuts a line of SpongeBob SquarePants toys, including playsets, vehicles, and figures where SpongeBob is featured in the Imaginext look. The LEGO Group will also feature SpongeBob in two new building sets from debuting at Toy Fair this week.
- Victorious master toy licensee Spin Master unveils new products for the live-action comedy series. The 2012 offerings will expand on Spin Master’s first Victorious toy launch in October 2011. The new line will feature fashion dolls, and role-play, including a new Tori Singing Doll featuring the hit song, Best Friend’s Brother. Feature dolls for additional Victorious characters, including Trina, Cat and Jade are also included.
Hasbro inks a deal with CBS Consumer Products to manufacture and globally market a collection of new products based on the Star Trek property next year. The toy line will launch in support of the new Star Trek movie sequel from Paramount, which is set to open May 17, 2013. The new Star Trek products include a line of KRE-O (www.hasbro.com/kre-o/en_us) building sets, a full line of role-play toys for kids, as well as select new figures.
Bulldog Licensing is named to handle the licensing program for cartoonist Jim Davis’ iconic property Garfield in the UK. Garfield’s strong presence in the UK market has spurred the development of a broad licensing program that includes partners such as Blues Clothing, Brand Alliance and Silverknit for apparel, Sert MST for pet products, Whitehouse for amusement plush and Smiffys for dress up, among others. The Garfield cartoon strip can be found daily in the UK newspaper the Daily Mail, and the animated series, The Garfield Show, airs on the UK digital channel Boomerang.
Lionsgate and CafePress partner to create an official online store for the movie The Hunger Games (http://shop.cafepress.com/hungergamesmovie). The site will launch on Tuesday, February 21 and will offer consumers both officially licensed film merchandise (apparel, accessories, and novelty items) and fan created designs (self-designed t-shirts, canvas bags, water bottles, etc.). Additionally, via a special promotion beginning now and running throughout the lifetime of the store, fans will also have a chance to create a free District ID Card through a new exclusive Hunger Games Facebook application (www.becomeacitizen.pn), which can also be accessed via the CafePress shop. Fans that register for an ID card through the app can claim a physical ID card that shows their district and job assignment, among other things. Existing “citizens of Panem” can also claim their free The Hunger Games ID card (shipping fees and exceptions may apply) through the app. The Hunger Games movie releases March 23, 2012.

Actress/comedian Wanda Sykes lends her voice to a mean witch in the first-ever hour-long special of Nickelodeon‘s CG-animated preschool series Bubble Guppies, premiering Sunday, February 19, at 8p. In the fairytale-themed special, Bubble Puppy’s Fin-tastic Fairytale Adventure, viewers will be introduced to a range of concepts including math, science, and literacy, the arts, and socio-emotional development. Bubble Guppies airs regularly weekdays at 11 and 11:30a on Nickelodeon.
First Lady Michelle Obama will make a special taped appearance at Cartoon Network‘s upcoming second annual Hall of Game Awards (www.hallofgame.com), which is hosted this year by basketball legend and TNT NBA analyst Shaquille O’Neal, premieres Monday, February 20 at 7p. Mrs. Obama. Mrs. Obama, who founded Let’s Move! two years ago to solve the problem of childhood obesity, will appear onscreen to speak about the importance of getting active and to congratulate Let’s Move L.A. Cartoon Network’s Hall of Game Awards is once again produced by IMG Media, the production arm of global sports, entertainment and media company, IMG, with TV and special events producers, Michael Dempsey and Steve Mayer also returning as executive producers.
DirecTV will celebrate Black History month with the premiere of More Than A Dream, a DirecTV Original Entertainment documentary about the US Civil Rights Movement and the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., airing throughout the month exclusively on Audience Network. Narrated by Martin Sheen, the documentary is also available to 8,000 schools nationwide as part of the DirecTV Goes To School (www.directvgoestoschool.com/mlk) program. In addition, through a partnership with Discovery Education, teachers and students across the country will have access to an online portal designed to enhance the education experience of More Than A Dream and encourage thoughtful dialog. Classrooms will have access to a variety of resources at www.discoveryeducation.com/mlk, which are aligned to national education standards, including a chaptered version of the documentary for classroom use with corresponding teacher guides.

Turner Broadcasting System Asia Pacific (TBSAP) appoints 19-year industry veteran Glenn Bartlett as Creative Director. Bartlett will head up the creative direction for the on-air and off-air creative direction for Turner’s networks in the region including Cartoon Network, POGO, Boomerang, as well adult aimed networks truTV and Turner Classic Movies, while supporting the development of key kids’ franchises such as Ben 10 and The Amazing World of Gumball. Based in Hong Kong, Bartlett reports to Lucien Harrington, VP/Branding and Communications. Prior to joining TBSAP, Bartlett was the Senior/Executive Creative Director at I&S BBDO/Proximity, in Tokyo and before that in Shanghai.
