Now Premiering –

This April, Hallmark Movie Channel launches in HD.

Now, for the first time, Hallmark Movie Channel’s schedule of movies — including
original movies, Hallmark Hall of Fame movies, and blockbuster feature films –
will be available in high definition.

Hallmark Movie Channel in HD. The legacy has never been so clear.

Good Morning.  It’s Wednesday, February 13, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

It’s official! Put down your picket signs, the writers’ strike is over.  Last evening members of the Writers Guilds East and West voted by a 92.5% margin to lift the restraining order that was invoked on November 5th. In a statement from Patric M. Verrone, President/WGA West reads in part:

“This was not a strike we wanted, but one we had to conduct in order to win jurisdiction and establish appropriate residuals for writing in new media and on the Internet. Those advances now give us a foothold in the digital age. Rather than being shut out of the future of content creation and delivery, writers will lead the way as TV migrates to the Internet and platforms for new media are developed.”

Post Strike plans:

  • Saturday Night Live will return to production just as soon as possible with the strike now over. First show back on the air is expected to be on February 23rd – no guest host announced as yet.
  • Lifetime Television will soon begin season two production of Army Wives with an early summer premiere scheduled, now that the strike is over.
  • CBS will not go back into production with Cane for this season, which doesn’t say anything outright about next season, but the implication isn’t good.  Same is true for The CW’s Life is Wild – no more shows for this season.
  • On the flip side, CBS has ordered Sharks and Rules of Engagement to go back into production, as well as New Adventures of Old Christine and Two and a Half Men (duh).
  • And the bad news for 24 fans … that show won’t return now until January 2009.

SPEED returns its original show PINKS for season 5 on February 20 at 9p. In this new season, the 50’s-style drag racing show will visit Missouri, Alabama and New York.

Broadcast Evening News Ratings Wrap-Up: The final results for the week of February 4, 2008:
NBC: 9.69 million total viewers and 2.4/9 A25-54
ABC: 9.04 million total viewers and 2.3/9 A25-54
CBS: 6.76 million total viewers and 1.7/6 A25-54
*Note: ABC’s World News was preempted on February 5 on the West Coast due to Super Tuesday coverage and therefore Tuesday’s ratings are excluded from ABC’s weekly average.

CMT opens season three of The Ultimate Coyote Ugly Search 3 on March 7 at 9p with eight episodes featuring ten women competing for the final spot in the Coyote Ugly traveling troupe and a $50,000 prize.

Last Sunday’s premiere of Six Degrees Could Change the World on National Geographic Channel over three airings (8p, 10p and 12a) drew a combined 3.5 million A25-54 viewers.

National Geographic Channel (NGC) gives viewers an insider’s look at the Port of Los Angeles and neighboring Port of Long Beach in a new weekly series, America’s Port. The eight-part series debuts April 6 at 10p then will move to its regular time slot of Mondays at 10p. Produced by Original Productions for NGC, producers of Ice Road Truckers and Deadliest Catch, America’s Port will follow the workers who operate these ports where hundreds of tons of consumer goods pass through every day.

ION Media Networks, Inc. signed a non-exclusive deal with Twentieth Television to air the classic TV series M*A*S*H on ION Television in primetime.

WPT Enterprises, Inc. has a new network partner as World Poker Tour (WPT) opens its sixth season on GSN March 24 at 9p. The new season includes 23 two-hour episodes beginning with the Mirage Poker Showdown and three new tour stops, more than twenty new players and a new host Layla Kayleigh. WPT will follow GSN’s High Stakes Poker series.

CBS Sports announced beginning next month College Sports Television (CSTV) will become the CBS College Sports Network. Sean McManus, President, CBS News and Sports and Tony Petitti, EVP/Executive Producer, CBS Sports will supervise the daily operations of the network. To enhance the new cable network, original programming will be developed and anchoring the schedule will be a twice nightly program College Sports Tonight, with news and information focused on college sports. Also, CSTV’s online properties will be incorporated into the new network creating a comprehensive collection of sports-themed websites.

Outdoor Channel launched on WideOpenWest (WOW! Internet, Cable and phone) making the network available to WOW! Digital Cable subscribers in the Chicago, Detroit, Columbus and Cleveland markets.

Joel Surnow, executive producer of Fox’s 24, is leaving the show.  Surnow’s contract with Twentieth Century Fox TV was due to expire in April, and both sides have chosen to call it a day. He had been with the show since the beginning.  Stepping in will be Howard Gordon who has been running the day-to-day on this show since the start of Season #6.

Fox has ordered a pilot of a new gamer based on the Japanese game show Hole in the Wall from Fuji TV which is likened to a human game of Tetris, reports Variety. The US version will be produced by FremantleMedia N.A.  The format has been sold in other countries and is reportedly successful in Australia, India and Russia, and clips can be seen on YouTube as well.

Justin Hartley of The CW’s Smallville, has signed a talent holding deal with the network.  His past work includes the title role in the pilot Aquaman, and was also involved with two other CW pilots – Spellbound and eight Days a Week, reports THR.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:   Writers, pick up your pens! Hollywood writers are satisfied they will at least get a seat at the table if studios begin  feasting on revenues from digital platforms. Members of both the East and West wings of the WGA (92.5% of the 3,775 who voted, to be exact) voted overwhelmingly to ratify the deal hammered out by the guild’s governing boards over the weekend, offering writers mostly flat fees in these early days online distribution. One thing seems certain  if big money does start to come pouring in from streamed shows and movies there will be another showdown three years from now. Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.
