Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, February 13, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

DIC Entertainment has launched its first 24/7 online video channel, KewlCartoons.com, which offers a range of new and classic titles from DIC’s library as well as imkewl chat and games. Program titles available via KewlCartoons.com include Dino Squad, Inspector Gadget, The Littles, Liberty’s Kids, and the live-action series Cake among others.  Plans for this year also include the launch of new property websites for DIC brands, such as Eloise, Beginner’s Bible, and Inspector Gadget.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Jetix Europe unveiled it has begun production on a new animated series, Kid vs. Kat (52×11), with Studio B Productions Inc.  Kid vs. Kat bows on Jetix Europe’s channels from early 2009.  The series revolves around Coop, a 10-yr-old boy, and the stray and malevolent cat (Kat) that his sister brings home, and who develops a crazed dislike for Coop.  Created by Rob Boutilier, Kid vs. Kat is produced by Studio B Productions, in association with Jetix Europe and YTV (Canada).  Jetix Europe holds TV distribution rights across Europe and the Middle East, including Pay TV and Free TV distribution, as well as home video & consumer product rights.  Disney-ABC International Television will handle TV distribution rights to the series for the Jetix Europe held territories.  Decode Enterprises will handle TV, home entertainment and merchandising and licensing rights for the rest of the world.

Shaftesbury Films and Family Channel (Canada) are partnering for the new teen-targeted comedy series, Overruled! (13×30).  Currently in production, Overruled! Is slated to premiere on Family Channel and Disney Channel (US) later this year.  The series follows a smart 15-yr-old boy, who becomes a lawyer in his high school’s Teen Court.  Created by Jeff Biederman, Jeff F. King and Jeffrey Alan Schechter, the series is produced by Shaftesbury Films in association with Family Channel, and with participation of the Canadian Television Fund.

Fresh TV Inc., a Canadian production company, inks a deal with Teletoon Canada Inc. and Nelvana to develop a 6Teen live-action feature film.  Additionally, Fresh TV has received a grant from the Canadian Television Fund for the project.  Slated to begin production in fall 2009, the screenplay is being penned by 6Teen series creators Tom McGillis and Jennifer Pertsch.  Nelvana originally produced 6Teen, with Fresh TV producing later episodes. Nelvana Enterprises distributes 6Teen worldwide and will also handle distribution of the feature.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Cartoon Network will premiere George Lucas’ new CGI animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars (30+ x30), following the property’s North American theatrical release (August 15), from Warner Bros. Pictures. Star Wars: The Clone Wars is produced by Lucasfilm Animation, which is based in California and also has a studio in Singapore.  International TV broadcast information is imminent.

TV-Loonland secures international broadcast sales for its multi-platform CGI property Pat & Stan including, Italy’s Mediaset (Italy) and Germany’s ARD/HR.  Pat & Stan will also air on Ki.Ka (Germany), Cartoon Network Spain, Disney India, Voom HD Networks/Animania (USA), DR TV (Denmark), TG4 (Ireland) and Minimax (Eastern Europe).  Targeted to K6-9, Pat & Stan is created by animator, Pierre Coffin, Pat & Stan (140×15, 210×30, and 1×22) is co-produced animator MacGuff and TF1, with a series of 39×7 episodes currently in production.  You might remember Pat & Stan as the YouTube stars who performed the song, The Lion Sleeps Tonight in 2006.

CCI Entertainment and Scholastic Media have inked pre-sales of the 3D animated series Turbo Dogs to qubo (US) and CBC (Canada).  Targeted to K4-7, Turbo Dogs follows the antics of a community of dogs that are crazy about racing.  The series is based on the book Racer Dogs by illustrator Bob Kolar.

thePlatform, a broadband video publisher, inks a deal wit Corus Entertainment to deliver broadband video via several of Corus’ portals.  Under the new deal, thePlatform will provide broadband video management support for Corus’ preschool aimed TreehouseTV and kid centric YTV, as well as its women’s targeted WNetwork.  thePlatform is also syndicating Corus’ original programming to other destination sites. Additionally, Corus will also deploy custom flash-based players across its portals using the Platform’s mps Present Player development Kit.

CYNOPSIS KIDS GOES TO KIDSCREEN SUMMIT …

Co-producers Sesame Workshop and Cartoon Pizza take Pinky Dinky Doo back into production on a new season (26 eps).  Sesame Workshop and Cartoon Pizza have teamed with Abrams/Gentile Entertainment, Inc. (AGE) and animation studio Keyframe to shift Pinky from her flash animation to 3D animation style.  Sesame Workshop will showcase the series and new season at KidScreen, discussing renewals and new partners.  The preschool series revolves around 7-yr-old Pinky, and focuses on literacy through storytelling.  Season two of Pinky Dinky Doo will debut on CBeebies (UK) and Discovery Kids Latin America.

Boomerang Latin America has acquired Animation Collective’s preschool animated series Ellen’s Acres (52×11).  Turner UK, ABC Australia, Al Jazeera and TV Ontario have also licensed Ellen’s Acres.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Johnson & Johnson is launching a new mom targeted marketing campaign focusing on the “power of a mom’s touch,” to promote Johnson’s Baby Lotion online, on TV and print.  To support the effort, Johnson’s debuts a series of online animated shorts, developed with Animation Collective and featuring the voice of actress Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order: SVU) beginning today at www.touchingbond.com .  The shorts are promoted online at www.babycenter.com , Discovery Health, TLC and Meredith publications’ websites, as well as via direct-to-consumer emails.  The Spanish-language version of the animated shorts will be available at www.touchingbond.com/espanol and promoted via www.babycenter.com/espanol and www.univision.com .

STONE SOUP

Big Bad Boo Studios, a new animation studio, hangs out its shingle in Vancouver. Founded by husband and wife team Aly Jetha and Shabnam Rezaei, they have brought on animation veteran Glen Kennedy to oversee operations for the new operations as Animation Director.  Big Bad Boo Studios is currently producing Norooz Productions’ animated kid-targeted series Mixed Nutz (13×30), which aims to teach kids t0 embracing their differences.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Classic Media appoints Nina Henderson as Marketing Director/Seasonal, Preschool and Family Brands in North America.  Henderson was formerly Sr. Marketing Manager/Sesame Street for Fisher-Price.  She will be based in NYC and report to Nicole Blake, SVP/Marketing.

Frederic Soulie is named Head of Interactive, DIC Entertainment.  Soulie will manage DIC’s websites.  He will report to Jeffrey Edell, President & COO.  Prior to this Soulie served as DIC’s Sr. Director/Corporate and Strategic Planning.
