Verizon Communications is preparing to offer its own online video streaming service that would serve as a competitor to Netflix, according to a report from Reuters. The company has been speaking with potential programming partners, and could look to unveil the service in 2012. However, Verizon would only offer the streaming service outside of FiOS markets, which would still make it available for close to 85 million U.S. households. In terms of the scope of the programming packages that would be available, sources indicate to Reuters that they would be limited, and could follow a similar path to the offerings from Starz Play and EPIX, which provide packages of movies. Verizon FiOS currently delivers about 30 networks on the web to subscribers via Verizon FiOS TV Online.
Cox Communications has finally launched Cox TV Connect, which is its iPad app that will offer live streaming cable channels to customers. Cox subscribers with Preferred, Premier or Ultimate Cox High Speed Internet service, Cox TV Essential service or higher and a DOCSIS modem can download and have access to the free app. The app currently features content from 35 channels. Similar to the live streaming offerings from DirecTV, Time Warner and Cablevision, access to the app is only available inside the household.
Nielsen has announced that it will assess ratings for the 26 live Verizon FiOS TV channels that subscribers will have access to on the revamped Xbox Live, reports Multichannel News. “TV content delivered through game consoles is eligible to contribute to ratings as long as the content is encoded and viewed on a metered set,” said Nielsen SVP Brian Fuhrer. “We are working closely with the content distributors and console manufacturers to make sure this continues to meet our requirements for detection.”
NBC News will now be available for free on-demand on the Roku streaming platform, as per a new agreement between MSNBC Digital Network and Roku Corporation. It will be available on all Roku streaming players and will offer access to all NBC News segments and programming content.
Later this month, Mediacom Communications will begin to add free, ad-supported Hulu content to Mediacomtoday.com, according to Multichannel News. The companies did not reveal the terms of the deal. Mediacom is the eighth-largest cable company in the U.S. and has 1.1 million subscribers.
Popular online social discovery site StumbleUpon has undergone a redesign. Along with a new logo, new colors and a new search engine entitled “Explore Box,” the site has inked deals with 250 partners for individual channels that users can follow. Partners include Yelp, Funny or Die, Vanity Fair and celebrities such as Jim Carrey, Mariano Rivera and Chelsea Handler. The redesign is mostly cosmetic; as the site hasn’t changed its algorithm that lets users discover new content based on previous likes and interests.
Multiplatform digital production company Somethin’ Else has been selected by BRIT Awards Ltd. to be the official online, social media and content producer for The BRIT Awards 2012. The new deal adds to the company’s prior work for the BRIT Awards with the inclusion of a new social media strategy, a redesigned homepage, the production of “backstage” online segments and radio syndication of the event. The awards will take place at The O2 in London on February 21, 2012.
Fiber-based bandwidth infrastructure provider Zayo Group has announced the completion of a $315 million round of funding on a five-year term loan. Strong demand led to an increase in the loan amount from the originally marketed price of $295 million. The funds will be largely directed towards completing the recent $345 million acquisition of 360networks.
Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has partnered up with mobile discovery app Shazam to promote the release of its upcoming film, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked. The Shazam logo will be embedded into all TV promos for the movie; when users watch an ad for the film, they can tag it via the Shazam app in order to unlock exclusive content and downloads, including an extended trailer, clips from the movie and links to purchase the first two films in the franchise. For a limited time, users will also be able to download the film’s single, “Vacation.”
Japanese advertising agency ADK has teamed up with eYeka in order to gain access to eYeka’s online community of over 200,000 creative consumers who help agencies and brands generate fresh marketing ideas and foster consumer engagement. Via this crowd-sourcing partnership, ADK will be able to reach out to creative consumers in 94 countries in hopes of developing advertising campaigns that have a higher probability of resonating with and engaging audiences. Brands who have tapped eYeka’s community include Coca-Cola, Unilever and Microsoft.
Twitter has released its Year in Review and has named ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars as the “#1 Hot Topic in Television.” The show was ranked second in Top Television Trends in 2010. The ranking is the result of a concerted social media effort from the show’s producers and on-air talent, who routinely engage fans on the social media site by live-tweeting new episodes. The popular teen show has also used Twitter to run contests, such as the #PrettyLittleShhh campaign where fans were encouraged to tweet pictures of themselves striking the “shhh” pose that is featured on the series’ key art. New episodes will premiere on January 2, 2012.
Rovi Corporation and Decipher, a U.K. media strategy and research firm, have released the first results of a two-phased study they are conducting on Smart TV usage and interactive advertising in the U.K. This U.K. Field Trial focuses on Samsung connected TVs and Blu-ray players, and has partnerships with Twentieth Century Fox and Channel 4. The study finds that 84% of respondents are connecting their Samsung Smart TVs and Blu-ray players and are regularly using the Samsung Smart Hub content portal, which connects users with content delivered from an IP address via apps. Other findings of note include:
- 49% of respondents claim usage of Smart Hub makes them “watch more TV.”
- The biggest reason cited for using Smart Hub is its ability to allow multi-tasking, as well as access to on-demand content on a single screen.
- 58% of respondents use fewer devices to go on the internet because they can now access apps on their TV.
SF Film Spots is a new interactive app that highlights famous movie locations in San Francisco. Users of the app can check out information on more than 230 films that have been shot in more than 840 locations around the city. The app provides info on the films, including cast, crew, ratings, genres and year released, as well as facts about the location. A GPS feature allows users to view film spots for a single film or all locations. It is available in iTunes for $2.99.
Organic, a digital marketing agency and division of Omnicom Group, has made a couple of promotions within its executive team. Andy McKinney, formerly executive director of engagement management, is now Vice President; he oversees clients including Nike and Intel and will report to Alle Aufderhaar, senior vice president and general manager of Organic San Francisco. Brad Mancuso has been elevated from group creative director to Executive Creative Director; his client work includes Organic’s business with Intel, Bank of America and Sony PlayStation. Mancuso will report to Organic COO Conor Brady.
