CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

12/07/05

Good morning.  It’s Wednesday, December 7, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tonight’s Finale:
UPN
: America’s Next Top Model at 8p

Tonight’s Premiere:
Bravo:  Project Runway at 10p* MORE GOOD STUFF *Starting on Friday, CMT will make some of its programming available for VOD with both Comcast and Charter cable systems.  Content will include spotlights on country stars and music specials, as well as some of CMT’s original series, including past seasons of Cowboy U and Popularity Contest. CMT will be added to Comcast ON DEMAND, which is currently available to the majority of the company’s customers.

The WB has ordered a second season of Beauty & the Geek, currently scheduled to return to the lineup on Thursday, January 12 at 9p with 8 episodes.  As in the first season, this go-around will feature eight socially inept book-smart guys, and 8 beautiful women who rely a little more on their looks than their grey matter.   In pairs they will each compete for the $250,000 prize by participating in a variety of challenges.  During the first season of six episodes last summer, the program averaged a 2.2/8 among A18-34 and a 2.5/9 among M18-34, while also delivering a strong teenage audience.

So you’re a huge fan of the NCAA March Madness college basketball tournament, but you’re forever feeling jipped when your alma mater is considered an “out of market” school for your area, and you never get to see those games?  Well, CBS is working on that problem for you.  This March, CBS will make the regional games available to you free on the internet, starting March 16. CBS will offer as many as 56 games on the internet thru the regional semi-finals round.  The streaming games will be available at NCAAsports.com

While yesterday at this hour it was just a rumor with nothing official coming from NBC, the folks at iTunes already had a handful of NBC, SciFi and USA programming ready to download at a buck-ninety-nine a piece.  Personally, I downloaded last week’s Law & Order episode that I missed on TV and watched it on the train into the city.  All wonderfully civilized.  Among the shows offered for commercial-free download are Law & Order, The Office, Surface, Monk, Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Battlestar Galactica, as well as what is being categorized as “Vintage NBC” programs including Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Knight Rider, Dragnet, and Adam 12.

Sci Fi Channel‘s premiere of its original miniseries The Triangle this past Monday evening drew in 4.3 million viewers from 9-11p.  That numbers makes Part 1 the highest rated program to air on the network since 2003 when it aired the opening night of Steven Spielberg Presents TAKEN which delivered 4.9 million viewers.  According to Sci Fi, The Triangle was the #1 non-sports program on cable Monday night, second only to USA’s WWE Monday Night Raw.  Part 2 aired last night and Part 3 is scheduled for this evening at 9p.

Verizon FiOS launched in Florida yesterday, in a small 21,000 person community within the city of Tampa called Temple Terrace, tho at this point only a quarter of that community thus far has service. The remainder will have to call for activation of the service. Verizon FiOS offers 180 channels, as well as an extensive VOD library, at a cost of $39.95 per month.  This is only the second Verizon FiOS market. By this time you know the first was the town of Keller in Texas back in September.

A quick reminder – in today’s edition of Cynopsis: Multicultural Edition, look for the MCE in Focus with the spotlight trained on ESPN Deportes.  If you’re not a current subscriber, you have a couple of options – subscribe (at www.cynopsis.com) or read the edition in the archive here .

* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *ABC has ordered up a comedy pilot called Mo’s House with comedienne Mo’Nique, from Touchstone Television.  According to Variety, the scene is set in a small town outside of Baltimore, and the story lines will follow Mo’Nique’s own sensibilities as she plays a working class mom and wife.

NBC has added to its pilot cast for Kidnapped, a drama about the New York City kidnapping of a 15 year old son of rich parents, and the subsequent investigation which unfolds over the course of the season.  Joining the cast will be Dana Delaney as the boy’s mother.  Kidnapped is from 25C Productions, with NBC Universal Television and Sony Pictures Television.

CBS has ordered six episodes of a new reality series called Moochers, from the development minds of Dr. Phil McGraw and his son Jay McGraw, under their shingle Stage 29.  This is a topic Dr. Phil has covered in his syndicated series, wherein he helps families move the moochers out of their homes. You know, the 20 or 30-something sons who aren’t working, or the relatives who come for a weekend or “just until they find a place” and stay for a year. No dates yet.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *Paramount Advertiser Services has appointed a trio of new vice presidents who all report to  Paul Montoya, SVP and General Sales Manager for the Division. Joan McArthur has been named VP/Research; Steven Montana has been promoted to VP/Sales & New Business Development; and Wesley Waterston has been promoted to VP/ Midwest Sales & New Business Development.  New York City-based  Joan McArthur will oversee the research department, charged with providing support to the PAS sales team. In his new position,  Steven Montana will be responsible for advertiser sales and new business development on the East Coast from his base in New York City. Wesley Waterston will oversee advertiser sales and new business development on the West Coast and in Chicago, where he is based.

Fred Graham, chief anchor and managing editor of Court TV, will be taking on a new role at the network effective January 1, heading up its new editorial board in Washington, D.C.  In his new role, Fred will oversee the editorial board  which will focus its efforts on key issues including the campaign for wider camera access in courtrooms, as well as tapping into local resources within the legal community to address other issues and initiatives vital to our society today.

Red Dog Entertainment has upped Jeanne Dresp to Executive Director/Production Management where she will oversee production on all original network series. She will also be involved with development activities at the company.

Breakthrough Entertainment Inc. has appointed Nat Abraham as Head of Canadian Acquisitions & Sales, a newly established division.  Nat will be responsible for the acquisition and placement of international programs into Canada. He will also work in tandem with Tanya Kelen, Head of Distribution, to secure worldwide sales on new properties.  * RATINGS *Top Ten Basic Cable Ad Supported Network Rankings among Total Viewers for the week of November 28-December 4, 2005:

presents This Day in History:
1787:  Underscoring the attractiveness of the new Federal Constitution to small states, delegates to the Delaware Constitutional Convention unanimously ratify the document, making Delaware the first state in the Union.  New Hampshire, another small state, was the ninth state to ratify, in 1788, at which point the Constitution was formally adopted.
