Good morning. It’s Wednesday, December 4, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

INDYCAR revealed its broadcast schedule for the 2014 season, which will include ABC’s 50th consecutive telecast of the Indianapolis 500 on May 25. Overall, ABC will carry five races while NBCSN delivers 13. NBCSN coverage launches with the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 12-13 with all 13 races, which include the final 11 races of the season, set to be streamed live on NBC Sports Live Extra. ABC’s portion will also include the season-opening Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on March 30, the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix double header on May 31 and June 1.

On the Air

ESPN locked in the first five analysts for its coverage of the 2014 World Cup tournament next year, naming Michael Ballack (Germany), Alexi Lalas (USA), Steve McManaman (England), Santiago Solari (Argentina) and Taylor Twellman (USA) to its broadcast core. ESPN’s English-language domestic presentation will run on ESPN, ESPN2, ABC and WatchESPN throughout the month-long tournament, spanning June 12  July 13, 2014. Ballack, Lalas, McManaman and Solari will appear on pre-match, halftime and post-match shows, SportsCenter, ESPN FC, and FIFA World Cup-themed news and information programs. Twellman will primarily serve as a co-commentator. In their first assignment, the analysts will join host Bob Ley at the ESPN studios in Bristol for the Final Draw for the 2014 FIFA World Cup on ESPN2, Friday, December 6, at 11:30a.

Around the dial, Univision Deportes announced its own plans to cover the 2014 World Cup Final Draw with live coverage of the entire Draw including live interviews and predictions on the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil before the event. Sorteo Final de la FIFA Brasil 2014 will include special reports throughout the week on all Univision Deportes Network studio shows, and a special two hour Draw Preview in primetime the night before, Thursday, December 5. Following the Draw on Friday, it will offer a post-show with analysis of the results.

The Producers Guild Award nominations were announced with ESPN and HBO snatching up all five slots for The Award for Outstanding Sports Program category. Nominees include HBO’s 24/7, Hard Knocks and Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel and ESPN’s Monday Night Football and SportsCenter. In addition, ESPN’s 30 for 30 was nominated for The Award for Outstanding Producer of Non-Fiction Television.

MLB Network will televise the first-ever MLB Network Social Media Awards, designed to recognize the ever-growing social media connection between MLB players and clubs and their fans. The special will run on Sunday, December 15 at 8p, recognizing the best in social engagement from the 2013 MLB season. The event will give fans have the opportunity to vote on MLB.com across 12 categories of the most popular moments and players from the last year, ranging from Tweet of the Year and #OMG Play of the Year to Favorite Follow and Socially Savvy Rookie. Voting runs through Wednesday, December 4. The Miami Marlins’ Logan Morrison will join MLB Network’s Greg Amsinger and Heidi Watney to host the show at MLB Network’s Studio 3.

ESPN officially laid out plans for Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) and the station’s sportscaster, Champ Kind (David Koechner) to serve as the latest guest hosts of SportsCenter tomorrow at 6p. “When the opportunity presents itself to have the quintessential ‘Anchorman’ guest host SportsCenter,” said Jack Obringer, senior coordinating producer for the show, “you take advantage of it. I don’t know how to put this… but he’s kind of a big deal.” The duo will join regular anchors John Anderson and Lindsay Czarniak for the edition.

The chairman of the U.S. Olympic Committee stated that it was the organization’s “intention to bid” for the 2024 Olympics, according to the AP, provided a number of criteria are met. Requirements are set to include “the right message, the right technical plan, the right leader, right financial support, governmental support.” Potential host cities include Boston, Dallas, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Diego, San Francisco and Washington.

After more than 700,000 votes in NASCAR’s “Drive for the Cover” campaign, Tony Stewart was selected to be on the cover of the upcoming NASCAR ’14 video game. Stewart appeared on the cover of the officially licensed NASCAR game twice before, but this marks the first time he was selected by fans. NASCAR ’14 is scheduled for release in early 2014 on the PlayStation3 and Xbox 360.

The Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee revealed its new logo for Super Bowl XLIX, set to take place on Feb. 1, 2015. The logo will be showcased in all Host Committee activities and communications spanning the 14 months leading up to game: including community events, sponsorship activities and marketing such as digital engagement and social media.

After nabbing Canada’s largest broadcast rights agreement in NHL history, Rogers is out for more. The broadcaster has acquired the naming rights of Canada’s newest arena, which houses the Edmonton Oilers. The new arena will be dubbed Rogers Place.

IRONMAN announced today that Princeton, New Jersey has been selected to host the 24th race in the IRONMAN 70.3 U.S. Series. The inaugural IRONMAN 70.3 Princeton triathlon will take place on Sunday, September 21, 2014. The event will lead athletes through a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run through the Princeton Region of New Jersey. STOMP The Monster is the official Charity Partner of the 2014 IRONMAN 70.3 Princeton, which will support a team of 100 athletes through their endurance training and fundraising program.

Digital Fields

MLB Advanced Media unveiled a new mobile game, MLB.com Franchise MVP. The free-to-play game, available for iPhone and iPad, charges players with winning a World Series championship with every journey beginning as a minor league prospect playing for the Class A Advanced affiliate of their favorite MLB team, working his way up the ladder to the Major Leagues.

CBS Sports announced plans to stream select games from its 2013-2014 college basketball schedule, in complement to the game broadcasts, on CBSSports.com and on the CBS Sports mobile app for iPhone, iPad, and Android. Coverage begins with UCLA/Missouri on Saturday, Dec. 7. College Basketball Live will feature 28 games over the course of the season. New features for the 2013-2014 season include an updated user interface, more access to social streams and expert commentary around the game, and live game updates directly in the video player.

Sportsman Channel revealed that its Facebook users grew by 77% in 11 months, surging passed the 500,000 ‘Like’ mark on Facebook. Executives estimate the Sportsman Channel Facebook page will have nearly 1 million ‘likes’ by the end of 2014.
