Edward Samuel “Ted” Rogers, Founder/CEO of Rogers Communications, Canada’s largest MSO passed away yesterday due to congestive heart failure at his home in Toronto. He was 75. In the early 1960s, Ted founded Rogers Radio Broadcasting Ltd with Canada’s first FM station, CHFI-FM and later entered into the cable industry and in the 1970s Rogers Cable TV was the first cable company to carry more than 12 channels. By 1980, Ted acquired Premier Communications Ltd. and combined with his own company, Rogers became the largest cable television company in Canada. Ted continued to diversify his holdings adding wireless, media and publishing as well as buying the Toronto Blue Jays baseball club in 2000 and in 2004 the Rogers Centre, Canada’s biggest covered indoor entertainment facility. Ted’s company today serves 7.7 million wireless subscribers, 2.3 million basic cable subscribers and 1.6 million high-speed internet customers. The board of directors is expected to form a committee to search for a replacement CEO and in the meantime, acting CEO Alan Horn will lead the company. Ted is survived by his wife, Loretta, four children and four grandchildren.

Television sets and the television industry will be rejuvenated as a means for future advertising business, so says David Verklin, CEO of Canoe Ventures speaking at the Broadcasting & Cable/Multichannel News OnScreen Media Summit. Canoe Ventures, a joint enterprise by the six largest cable operators, is putting Verklin in charge of introducing new ways to target consumers through advertising and interactivity on a national basis with fresh ideas set to debut first quarter 2009. Canoe’s initial application is a form of targeted ads called “zone addressability” allowing national clients to pinpoint consumers within cable TV’s 2,700 geographic zones using demographic information from Experian. Says Verklin, “Don’t count out the TV set, don’t count out the programming networks, don’t count out the cable television companies, and don’t count out the traditional television business.”

Nielsen confirmed National Geographic Channel (NGC) will be the first network to gain analytical data about commercials from Nielsen’s new DigitalPlus service using more than 330,000 set top boxes within Charter Communications’ Los Angels cable system. Information provided to NGC will include commercial and commercial pod ratings with second by second granularity; commercial creative retention; and standard vs. hi-def measurement.

Barring a few ongoing political races, the election season ad spending has been tallied and according to TNS Media Intelligence the grand total spent was $2.5 billion and $2.7 billion, as reported by B&C. Television took the largest piece of the pie at $2.2 billion with broadcast television at $2 billion with national cable and national networks at $200 million; print, radio, online and local cable round out the remaining $200-$400 million.
