NBC ordered a new eight-episode, one-hour game show series Hollywood Game Night. The series is from Will & Grace’s Sean Hayes and is based on his real-life game nights with celebrities. The premise of the show will have two contestants playing games with celebrities to compete for a cash prize. Hollywood Game Night is produced by Hazy Mills Productions, Mission Control Media and Universal Television. Hayes, Todd Milliner, Michael Agbabian and Dwight D. Smith will all serve as executive producers.
Yesterday NBC reported its chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel and his network production team were freed from captors in Syria. Engel and his team had been abducted and taken prisoner five days earlier soon after they crossed the border into Syria from Turkey. NBC News released this statement yesterday: “After being kidnapped and held for five days inside Syria by an unknown group, NBC News Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel and his production crew members have been freed unharmed. We are pleased to report they are safely out of the country.”
Nielsen revealed yesterday it will acquire its research rival Arbitron Inc. in a deal worth $1.26 billion. In the past, Arbitron competed against Nielsen in providing local television ratings. In more recent years, however Arbitron has concentrated on radio ratings and measuring out-of-home media consumption.
A 12th season of the national PBS series P. Allen Smith’s Garden Home will debut with 13 all-new hi-def episodes this spring 2013. In the new season, gardening and lifestyle expert P. Allen Smith will usher viewers to public and private garden and historic homes across the country. In addition, Smith takes on a new challenge on his own farm property, building a small eco-friendly home in 150 days for $150,000. P. Allen Smith Garden Home reaches 95% of total US TV markets.
Just prior to the 2013 Presidential inauguration, HISTORY presents a new series The Ultimate Guide to the Presidents premiering January 15 at 9p. From George Washington to Barack Obama, the eight-hour series will chronicle the history of the 43 men who have held the highest office in our land and the most influential position in the world. Karga Seven Pictures produces the series for HISTORY.
Science Channel debuts a new half-hour series based on the podcast from Josh Clark and Chuck Bryant called Stuff You Should Know on January 19 at 10p. The series will follow Josh and Chuck inside and outside the recording booth as they record their podcast and research topics for the show such as zombies to artificial intelligence and other scientific facts. Several guests will make cameo appearances during the season including John Hodgman, Sarah Silverman, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Rufus Wainwright and Michio Kaku. Stuff You Should Know is produced by School of Humans.
A trio of new renovation series highlight DIY Network’s schedule in the New Year. Made In Milwaukee debuts January 4 at 11p and this original series goes inside Milwaukee interior design firm, Flux Design. New series A Bryk at a Time opens February 24 at 9p and features host Danielle Bryk who is owner of a property company and design firm called The Bryk House. The third new series Rescue My Renovation premieres February 27 at 9p and documents the serious side of renovation, as homeowners combat damage caused by shoddy contractors and builders who take the money and run. DIY Network also welcomes the first season of the HGTV show Holmes Inspection to its lineup on January 8 at 8p. Other HGTV series making their first runs on DIY Network include My First Renovation on January 5 at 7p; Kitchen Cousins on January 6 at 8p; and House of Bryan on January 24 at 930p. Furthermore, the second season of The Bronson Pinchot Project debuts January 12 at 11p; The Vanilla Ice Project returns January 27 at 10p; Rehab Addict in its third season debuts January 10 at 10p; Million Dollar Contractor season two airs on Sundays at 10p; and Renovation Realities season 10 beginning February 23 at 9p.
The Weather Channel is moving forward with a new series Hacking the Planet set to premiere February 28 at 9p. The six-episode half-hour series looks at the work of scientists who are developing ways to prevent, weaken or redirect threatening weather conditions and natural events such as tornadoes, hurricanes, lightning, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The series is produced by Castle Pictures, Inc.
HBO’s fantasy series Game of Thrones is super-sizing the third season. Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are adapting the largest of the Song of Ice and Fire novel by author George R.R. Martin, A Storm of Swords and as a result are producing slightly longer episodes for HBO. The next season will still have 10 episodes and each one will clock in at 56- or 57-minutes in length versus the 52-minute episodes from last season. Game of Thrones premieres season three on March 31 on HBO with the season two out on DVD on February 19.
A second season of Property Wars makes a comeback on Discovery Channel starting January 10 at 10p. Set in Phoenix, the series goes inside the world of housing auctions following bidders buying houses they can only see from the outside. Property Wars is produced for Discovery Channel by Sharp Entertainment.
In other Discovery Channel news, the reality series American Guns will not be renewed for a third season. The network said the decision to cancel the show was made prior to the school shooting tragedy in Newtown, CT. A rep from the network further said “American Guns concluded earlier this year. Discovery Channel chose not to renew the series and has no plans to air repeats of the show.”
Chef Anne Burrell is back for a second season of Food Network’s Chef Wanted with Anne Burrell, bowing January 31 at 10p with thirteen all-new episodes. In this series, Chef Anne puts four top-level chef candidates through the ultimate job interview to find who can fill the position of Executive Chef. Chef Wanted with Anne Burrell is produced by Smart Dog Films and Mannahatta Productions.
Lifetime returns Project Runway for an 11th season with the series’ first-ever Teams Edition, premiering January 24 at 9p. Host and judge Heidi Klum is back along with Marie Claire’s Fashion Director Nina Garcia and featured judge, fashion designer Zac Posen. Tim Gunn will also return as mentor to the designers and Michael Kors will be the finale guest judge. The 11th season will also feature guest judges from film, television and music including Bette Midler, Susan Sarandon, Miranda Lambert, John Legend, Joan and Melissa Rivers, Emmy Rossum, Kristin Davis, Jordana Brewster and designers Rachel Roy, Tracy Reese, Chris Benz and Project Runway winner Christian Siriano. Lifetime will also air the special Road to the Runway prior to the premiere at 8p which serves as an introduction to the new competing designers.
This holiday season BET airs the Network World Premiere of Alex Haley’s epic miniseries Roots (1977) beginning this Friday at 8p. All six parts of Roots, celebrating its 35th anniversary, will air from Friday night through this Sunday, December 23. BET will continue the story with Roots: The Gift (1988) on December 24 at 11p; Roots: The Next Generations (1979) on December 25 at 8a; and Alex Haley’s Queen (1993) on December 26 at 8a.
Univision aired the 28-hour TeletonUSA which reached 13.9 million viewers who tuned in to watch all or part of the broadcast. Overall, the 28-hour broadcast on Univision averaged 1.2 million total viewers and 585,000 among A18-49. Additionally, the broadcast raised more than $8 million for children with disabilities in the US.
Hallmark Channel reports its Countdown to Christmas original holiday movie series, 12 original movies airing on consecutive Saturday nights since November 3, have delivered an average 2.6 household rating in primetime and have reached more than 21.1 million unduplicated viewers. Five of Hallmark Channel’s original movies have also ranked as the #1 cable program of the day: Matchmaker Santa (November 17), A Bride for Christmas (December 1) and Help for the Holidays (December 9) all delivered a 3.0 HH rating; Baby’s First Christmas (December 15) posted a 2.8 HH rating; and Naughty or Nice (November 24) pulled in a 2.6 HH rating.

Ovation, the only cable network exclusively dedicated to the arts was informed by Time Warner Cable it will be removed from TWC’s lineup when the current contract expires on December 31, 2012. This move will mean TWC’s customers will no longer have access to Ovation’s arts programming. Over the last six years, Ovation has grown from 5 to 51 million homes (based on Nielsen Universe Estimate, December 2012). Ovation is also available on other major cable, satellite and telco systems across the US. The network has a petition that TWC customers can sign at: http://www.keepovation.com.
Cox Communications announced improvements to its premium TV product, Cox Advanced TV Plus with an upgrade to the Trio Program Guide. The new enhancement will allow customers to receive personal recommendations for up to eight users in a household, based on movies and shows that are favorites; pause live TV from any TV in the Whole Home DVR network; and navigate TV listings faster and easier with additional slots. Cox is the first US multichannel video operator to offer individualized recommendations for video on the TV. The updated Trio Program Guide debuted in certain Cox markets in November and will be rolled out to Cox’s full system by the end of this month. The upgrade is free to existing Cox Advanced TV Plus customers.
The talk show Jeremy Kyle will not be returning for a third season as announced by Debmar-Mercury’s co-presidents Mort Marcus and Ira Bernstein, reports B&C. The show featuring British talk show host, Jeremy Kyle did not see ratings progress in many of the local markets that carried the show. Kyle also stars in a similar show on UK’s ITV and that show, which is produced separately from the US version, will continue.

A month before the series finale of 30 Rock on January 31, Universal Television inked an overall deal with executive producer Jack Burditt. The deal is similar to ones made with creator Tina Fey and star-producer Alec Baldwin. Burditt’s deal is for another two years at Universal where he will develop new series.
GMC TV revealed production details on two new original GMC World Premiere feature films that were filmed in British Columbia. Filming is currently underway on Jingle Bell Rock starring Drew Lachey (Dancing with the Stars) and The Carpenter’s Miracle starring Cameron Mathison (All My Children) just finished production. Both films are produced by Entertainment One (eOne) and eOne also handles the international distribution.
Canada’s Peace Point Rights secured sales for several of its lifestyle series: Keasha’s Perfect Dress with 14 half-hour episodes was licensed to Mediaset in Spain, Digicast in Italy and Ebony Life TV in Sub-Sahara Africa. Mediaset also picked up the half-hour special Colin and Justin’s Street Swap. Bake with Anna Olson with 40 half-hour episodes was acquired by Digiturk in Turkey and Chello Zone in the UK. Chimp Mommy with two half-hour eps was sold to Thai Public Broadcasting Service and The Living Channel NZ through Peace Point’s distribution partnership with Bomanbridge Media for representation in Australasia.

Sunday A18-49 Analysis: NBC once again ruled Sunday night with the A18-49 viewers at 7.3/19, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. In the 7p hour though, ABC won with an encore of America’s Funniest Home Videos at 1.4/4 followed by back-to-back The Cleveland Show episodes on FOX at an average of 1.2/4. NBC won at 8p with a combo of Football Night in America Part 3 and the start of the NFL game at an average of 5.5/15 while CBS’ 60 Minutes was not far behind at 4.9/12. The San Francisco versus New England game on NBC climbed in ratings to an 8.9/21 during 9p and the season finale of Survivor: Philippines on CBS came next at 3.3/8. NBC logged the final win of the night at 10p for more of the NFL game at 8.8/22 and CBS’ Survivor finale ranked #2 at 3.1/8.

Music Mastermind named James Mitchell as its Chief Technology Officer (CTO), reporting to Matt Serletic, Co-Founder/CEO.
