Cynopsis

12/19/07

Good Morning.  It’s Wednesday, December 19, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live will return with new episodes starting January 2. In a statement released by the network, host Kimmel said “Though it makes me sick to do so without my writers, there are more than a hundred people whose financial well-being depends on our show. It is time to go back to work. I support my colleagues and friends in the WGA completely and hope this ends both fairly and soon.”  Meanwhile, Letterman’s WorldWide Pants continues to try to work a deal with the WGA so Letterman and Ferguson can return on January 2 with writers.

Tonight’s Finale:
NBC: Journeyman at 10p

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

NBC will repurpose two USA Network series, Monk and Psych, giving both series a potential larger audience. New episodes of both series will air first on USA in January then repeat on Sunday nights in March on NBC.

Tribune Entertainment has closed its syndication distribution unit, though it will continue with its ad sales services, per Variety. For the shows the distribution arm had been handling including American Idol Rewind, the Dreamworks movie package, Ag Day and Soul Train, new distributors will be named for each of these shows.  Earlier this year, Family Feud was moved to Debmar-Mercury.

Broadcast Evening News Ratings Wrap-Up: The gap continues to widen between NBC’s Nightly News and ABC’s World News, particularly with total viewers. The results for the week of December 10, 2007:
NBC: 9.30 million total viewers and 2.2/8 A25-54 (think Michael Douglas’ voice has had anything to do with this?  naw …. this was before his time)
ABC: 8.86 million total viewers and 2.1/8 A25-54
CBS: 6.82 million total viewers and 1.8/7 A25-54

Showtime’s season finale of Dexter Sunday night (9p) pulled in nearly 1.4 million total viewers, +14% more viewers than the season one finale at 1.2 million.

VH1’s Monday night season finale of I Love New York 2 (9p) delivered 3.6 million A18-49 viewers, earning a 3.2 A18-49 rating. The final episode also drew in 5.4 million total viewers.

Anime Network will introduce four VOD television series next month:

  • Magikano – opens January 3; a comedy about a middle school student who has three witch sisters and is about to discover his own powers. From Studio Gonzo.
  • 5 Centimeters Per Second – starts January 17; three-part story of two best friends and their attempts to get back together after being separated. Produced by Makoto Shinkai.
  • Welcome to the NHK – begins January 17; dark comedy about geeks and nerds with social satire and conspiracy theories. Also from Studio Gonzo.
  • Moonlight Mile – premieres January 31; sci-fi adventure about two mountain climbers who become space explorers. From Studio Hibari.

The FCC voted along party lines to relax media cross-ownership rules in place for more than 30 years. The new rule allows media companies to own both broadcast stations and newspapers in the top 20 U.S. markets, hoping to give relief to ailing papers by allowing them to compete on multiple platforms. The Democrats on the committee also joined with Chairman Kevin Martin to cap cable subscriber ownership at 30%. The cross-ownership ruling was opposed by a group of 25 senators from both parties, who sent a letter a day before the vote warning they would take legal measures against it if it were passed. Meanwhile, a decision on regulations regarding product placement and integration on television was postponed to a later date.

TVN Entertainment Corp. and Illusion TV formed a new multiyear, multiplatform partnership to launch and distribute Illusion On-Demand. TVN will distribute the free VOD network to 22 partner outlets including AT&T U-verse, RCN and Verizon. Programming on Illusion On-Demand consists of action series, news, talk, anime and movies in the sci-fi, fantasy and comic book genres.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Susanne Smith McAvoy was appointed VP/Ad Sales Marketing for Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel. Based at the network’s New York office, Susanne will supervise the ad sales marketing team and is charged with increasing ad sales revenue by creating and executing strategic marketing and promotional efforts. She will report jointly to Bill Abbott, EVP/Advertising Sales and Laura Masse, EVP/Marketing.

Len Randazzo moves up to GSM of KUKC/Kansas City, the Univision station owned by Equity Media Holdings Corporation. Len will spearhead national and local sales efforts on behalf of the station.

Joe Weber will resign as Manager/Media Distribution and Development at Red Bull N.A. effective December 31. While employed with Red Bull for six years, he was responsible for the development and creation of nearly 200 programs that aired on ESPN, OLN, FOX Sports and Showtime among other networks. Joe will reinstate his company M3, Media, Marketing & Management, a media consulting firm with outlets in Los Angeles and Dallas/Ft. Worth.

M3 Television tapped former Dancing with the Stars Senior Producer Victoria Mercado Guinto as Senior Producer responsible for a portion of M3’s field production and execution. Based in Burbank, Victoria will report to Andy Meyers, President.

Kelly Burkhard was made Senior Talent Booker for syndicated morning talk show Live with Regis and Kelly. Previously, Kelly was the talent booker for Live, starting with the show in 1997. She will now manage the booking of all celebrity guests for the show while based in New York.
