Looking to come up with a weapon against a multitude of devices that allow users to stream internet content through their televisions, Comcast has begun testing a new broadband enabled service in the college town of Augusta, GA known internally as “Xcalibur,” reports the WSJ. The device will combine the features of a DVR – accessing recorded shows from subscriber’s authorized channels, as well as add the ability to watch selected web video and comment on what shows their watching via social networks in real time. If that doesn’t get your Spider Sense tingling, the set top is being referred to as “Parker” internally – as in Spider Man’s alter ego.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and local media company Raycom Sports unveil a new online video archive today dating back to 1983, chock full of full-length, classic Tournament and regular season men’s basketball games from all 12 ACC member schools. The ACC Vault is powered by Video platform provider Thought Equity Motion.
 
As the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced its 2011 Golden Globe nominees it also made a push to expand its presence online and in the social media space. HFPA Digital launched a redesign of GoldenGlobes.org with a live video announcement Tues. morning – new features include HFPA’s news, past winners, interviews, photos and videos to fans. Social touch points can also now be found on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. NBC will feature a live telecast of the Golden Globes at 5 PM PST and 8 PM EST on Jan. 16, 2011.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has awarded PBS with close to $500,000 in grant money to create new, educational content to advance math achievement in partnership with New York City Department of Education’s experimental School of One. New content will be created specifically for the personalized classroom instruction platform, built by So1 and distributed through the PBS Digital Learning Library (DLL).
 
Realtime digital Q&A service ChaCha completed an integration with Gigya‘s social CRM technology to enhance the platform’s social connectivity and engagement. ChaCha.com’s 22 million unique monthly visitors can now share their questions, answers and related content via Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, Google, Windows Messenger and LinkedIn.
 
Audio Network
announced a 100 millionth view milestone of videos featuring music and effects from the Audio Network Production Music Catalogue, used by producers and broadcasters such as the BBC, MTV, HBO, Nat Geo and Discovery. Producers can select from more than 35,000 music tracks across genres.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
While 90% of Americans say they pay little attention to online ads, 61% of online users in the U.S. say they notice ads targeted to them and say that such targeting isn’t effective in keeping costs down, according to the results of a new USA Today/Gallup poll. If given the choice, some 47% of the respondents said they would allow only advertising networks that they have specifically authorized to tailor ads to them, with another 37% saying they wouldn’t allow any ad networks to target them.
 
Marketers are beginning to explore a variety of ad formats embedded in Ebook readers, containing videos, banner ads and sponsorships that give away free books, per the WSJ. Researcher Forrester estimates that 7% of U.S. online adult users currently read books (via e-readers, tablets, PCs, smartphones, ect.), with that number expected to double next year.
 
Taboola has expanded internationally in a strategic partnership with Canada-based online news portal Canoe to deploy the start-up’s video recommendation and distribution platform products, Text2Video and Video2Video. Taboola video recommendations are based on algorithms that combine behavioral and contextual data to analyze users’ engagement with the videos they watch and generate real-time predictions.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Bethpage, NY-based Cablevision Systems Corp. completed its acquisition of Bresnan Communications through a newly-formed subsidiary. The MSO adds systems serving approximately 297k basic cable television subscribers and more than 629k homes passed in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and Utah.
 
Yahoo
enacted its next round of lay offs targeting between 650 and 700 mostly from the product divisions of its US units, as first reported in All Things D.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
U.S. Households now spend as much time on the internet – an ave. of 13 hours/week – as they do in front of the TV, according to a new Forrester Research report. Time viewing online has increased 121% during the past 5 years while TV viewing has remained mostly flat.
 
Android was named the leading new platform that publishers/developers intend to support in 2011 in Millennial Media‘s monthly Mobile Device Index, with iPad and Windows Phone 7 tied for second on the list. Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch remained the top devices, with Android and Apple tying for smartphone OS share, enjoying 38% of overall impressions. Other findings included:

  • Gaming apps remained the leading app category on the network, accounting for 28% of all app impressions with Music and Entertainment finishing #2 with a 22% share
  • Automotive apps entered the list of top app categories for the first time last month, more than tripling, as consumers researched new auto purchases and end-of-year promotions

Nokia announced that it is delaying the launch of its next generation E7 smartphone until next year, thus missing the holiday season. The E7 is designed to run on the Symbian 3 mobile OS; will feature an 8-megapixel camera; and support both LED flash and HD video capture.
 
CNBC introduced a new CBN Pro desktop market data tool offering real-time global data and news alerts from over 100 exchanges throughout the world. The client app, also available for the BlackBerry, provides live access to CNBC US, CNBC Europe and CNBC Asia Pacific live programming as well VOD access to more than 200,000 analyst and CEO interview clips.

Forgoing a pay model for now, CNN is going global with the wide international launch of a new free iPhone/iPod Touch and iPad apps, securing Lexus as an official launch partner and committing to offering live breaking news video. Users have the ability to toggle between U.S. and International News Preferences to access text stories, blog posts, photos and live and on demand news mobile video and audio. A new “broadsheet” user interface displays up to 350 news stories in a vibrant grid format, offering both a list view of top headlines and visual side show users can scroll or swipe through to navigate. Kudos to CNN for designing a full-featured app to take advantage of the iPad’s more generous touchscreen, rather than just repurposing the iPhone/iPod Touch interface.
