Cynopsis: Kids!
12/14/11

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, December 14, 2011, and this your first early morning briefing.

Kid’s book author Brian Selznick‘s (The Invention of Hugo Cabret, Wonderstruck) new  Teaching with Brian Selznick  website for in-class use launches this week with a virtual field trip to NYC’s American Museum of Natural History, which is the setting for his newest book Wonderstruck.  Hosted by Selznick and the American Museum of Natural History’s president Ellen V. Futter, the virtual field trip guides kids through three of the museum’s exhibits, the Wolf Diorama, the Ahnighito Meteorite, and the Giant Anopheles Mosquito, also featured in the book.  The virtual field trip is also available in closed caption.  Students can also learn about the museum’s history, exhibits, and collections from a museum curator, an exhibitions manager, and a senior scientist.  The website also includes corresponding activities for each stop on the tour to help students and teachers further explore the subject matter through science, language arts, social studies and art resources and activities.  The Scholastic.com-based Teaching with Brian Selznick site also offers classroom resources for Selznick’s book, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, which is the basis for director Martin Scorsese’s new movie Hugo, as well as author interviews, book reviews, and discussion guides for both of his books.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Anime director Mamoru Hosoda (Summer Wars, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time) is working on his next movie “Okami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki” (The Wolf Children Ame and Yuki), which distributor TOHO is set to release in Japan in July 2012, per Anime News Network.  Hosoda created and will direct the movie, which is co-writing with screenplay with Satoko Okudera.  The movie will be produced by Hosoda’s new anime company, Studio Chizu, with the anime studio Madhouse.  The movie follows the story of a Hana, a 19-year-old college student, who falls in love with and marries a wolf man and together they have and raise two wolf kids, Yuki (which means snow) and her younger brother Ame (which means rain) until the wolf man dies.  Yoshiyuki Sadamoto is designing the animated characters, and Takaaki Yamashita is overseeing the animation, with Hiroshi Ohno heading up the art direction for the movie, which Seiji Okuda is executive producing for NTV.   Okuda served as an executive producer for a number of famed anime animator/artist/director/creator Hayao Miyazaki’s movies at his Studio Ghibli.  Summer Wars, which was also animated by Madhouse, was a big hit in Japan winning lots of awards around the world.  Not that you asked, but I really liked Summer Wars and totally recommend seeing it if you get the chance.
