Verizon Communications may not be interested in purchasing Netflix after all, reports Bloomberg. This follows an earlier report from Bloomberg that originally indicated Verizon was “very serious” about making an offer to acquire Netflix. Porter Bibb, managing partner of investment firm Mediatech Capital, had said in an interview with Bloomberg TV that Verizon would spark a bidding war for the online streaming company, which would have lead to a sale around Easter 2011 for $4.6 billion. According to a later update on the ongoing story, two sources familiar with the situation told Bloomberg that Verizon hasn’t had any discussions regarding a possible purchase of Netflix. The report also notes that at an investor conference on December 7, Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam said the U.S. phone company will seek to expand beyond its current FiOS TV offering and towards the video streaming market. For what it’s worth, Reuters reported last week that Verizon was mulling an entry into the streaming business.


Hulu has launched Hulu Latino, a Spanish-language arm to the video site accessible straight from Hulu’s homepage. Hulu has also announced 11 Spanish-language content partners who will start populating the site in early 2012. Content partners include Azteca America, Butaca, Caracol Television, Comarex, Estrella TV, Imagina US, Laguna Productions, Maya Entertainment, RCTV, Todebebe and Venevision. Viewers will also have next-day access to current season programming from Univision, Galavision and Telefutara. Hulu Plus subscribers will be able to watch any Hulu Latino content on any Hulu Plus-enabled device.

BBC has introduced a new iPlayer app for the iPhone and iPod Touch, joining the existing versions of the streaming video player currently available for the iPad and Android devices. The iPlayer app streams all BBC television channels and networks to mobile devices. BBC also announced that streaming is now available on all iOS devices over all of the U.K.’s 3G mobile networks; the Android version of the app still requires a Wi-Fi connection. However, the BBC noted that the mobile web version of the software would provide 3G streaming support soon. The app is compatible with iOS 4.3 and higher, however devices running on iOS 5 or higher can also stream content to Apple TV via the AirPlay service.

The newly-released DIYtoGo mobile app, which is available for free in the Apple App Store, delivers full episodes of many popular shows from DIY Network to the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Additional content includes how-to videos from, as well as exclusive clips and previously unaired video segments from the digital network’s programming lineup. Users also have access to current programming schedules, behind-the-scenes photos and the network’s Facebook and Twitter channels. DIY Network is a home improvement channel from the makers of HGTV and Food Network, and currently reaches over 56 million homes in the U.S.

Forbes has launched a new mobile site optimized for iOS and Android devices, with a beta version available for Blackberry phones. HTML5 was used to build out the site, allowing for the creation of a seamless multiplatform content experience. The mobile site features a new search option that displays related people, places and company results from Forbes lists. When the search item is clicked on, a second drawer is expanded to show entries related to that search item.


Court Square Capital Partners has acquired a majority interest in U.S.-based digital media and outsourced broadcast services provider Encompass Digital Media through funds managed by the private equity firm. The investment will enable Encompass to continue expanding the range of services and the geographical coverage it is capable of providing for customers. There will be no changes to the existing management team. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed; it is expected to close in the first quarter of 2012, pending regulatory approval.


Ace Hardware is stepping into the iPad advertising world with a new interactive campaign on The Weather Channel’s app for the iPad. Aside from tapping into the app’s wide reach, as it has already received 5.5 million downloads to-date, Ace will also take advantage of the app’s interactive features. For example, users can choose a tool (such as a shovel or snow blower) and “remove” the snow that accumulates on their screen (one of the app’s notable features is weather-triggered images). Once the action has been finished, the item, its price and the nearest Ace Hardware location will be revealed. The ads will daypart to the times when the iPad is used the most, the nights and the weekends, which lines up with Ace’s “Get Your Weekend Back” campaign message.


Verizon Communications has lost a patent infringement case that was brought against the company by ActiveVideo Networks. In four separate decisions, Verizon has been found liable for up to $250 million in damages, supplemental damages, interest and royalties for infringing upon ActiveVideo’s intellectual property. A November court injunction had ordered Verizon to make its first monthly royalty payment to ActiveVideo by December 16 and to end its Verizon FiOS VOD service by May 23, 2012 if the company is unable to offer the service without unlawfully using ActiveVideo technology. Verizon appealed the decision and sought a stay in having to make the first royalty payment. A decision in a U.S. District Court has denied Verizon that request. ActiveVideo offers cloud-based delivery of VOD and interactive television services. Its CloudTV platform currently counts numerous cable operators, including Cablevision, as clients.

Motorola Mobility will use FourthWall Media’s EBIF platform for Motorola set-top boxes and both the EBIF and AirCommand solutions for Motorola Medios, a multi-screen managed services offering for the cable industry. AirCommand is a set of cloud-based services that connect mobile devices to EBIF-enabled set-top boxes. Through AirCommand, it will be possible to develop applications that offer services such as remote programming of DVRs; the ability to view and play on-demand titles; social media and messaging apps between mobile devices and set-tops; and other cross-platform tools, as well as merchandising and commerce. Via this agreement, AirCommand and the EBIF platform will be deployed to link up Motorola set-top boxes with Motorola Android-powered devices.


A new two-year study conducted by RevTrax, and released in conjunction with Yahoo, finds that search marketing campaigns are effective in driving offline sales. The report reveals that for every $1 of eCommerce revenue generated by paid search, marketers can expect to see another $6 of in-store revenue; the average click on a paid search ad generates approximately $15 of in-store; and almost 9% of clicks on paid search ads lead to an in-store sale. The study used digital couponing technology to measure the offline effectiveness of paid search ads by linking the point-of-sale barcode coupon redemption and total sale data all the way back to the exact keywords a consumer used to find the paid search ad. RevTrax works with retailers and other multichannel merchants to assess the effectiveness of digital media on offline transactions.


Just like its competitor Flipboard, Zite has also extended its mobile offering onto the iPhone. The more users use the new iPhone app, the better it will be able to deliver a customized and relevant news-reading experience. By and large the iPhone app is similar to the company’s iPad offering; however slight changes include a locked horizontal view in order to help users read content faster. Users can also give articles a thumbs up or thumbs down, giving Zite another way to better personalize the magazine to each specific user.

LIN Media is a local multimedia company that operates or services 34 network-affiliated TV stations, interactive websites and mobile products. The company has released an enhanced, free iPad app for 31 of its TV stations, which is designed to deliver quick access to breaking news published on its digital channels. Available features include a video content catalog, breaking news alerts for when the application is closed, interactive weather maps and a new “Report It” functionality that allows users to share news, photos and videos.

A hidden, fragmented code from inside Elfster ‘s free Google Chrome app unlocks one of three special holiday levels on Angry Birds for Chrome. Clues for where the pieces of code are hiding can be found on Elfster’s Facebook page, or by following the #bonuslevelhint hashtag on Twitter. Elfster’s wish-lists allow users to secretly ask friends important questions in regards to holiday gift ideas. It also enables users to share their wish-lists with friends or on Facebook, and will keep track of gifts that have already been purchased so there is no danger of receiving the same gift twice.


BzzAgent, the social marketing arm of dunnhumby, has appointed Paul Hunter as COO. Previously serving as CIO on dunnhumby’s executive team, Hunter will oversee the integration of the dunnhumby operating model with BzzAgent’s business. Based in Boston, Hunter will report to BzzAgent CEO Dave Balter. BzzAgent became a subsidiary of dunnhumby in May 2011, marrying the two companies’ respective social marketing and shopper marketing services. BzzAgent has run campaigns for brands such as Unilever, Wrigley, Michelin and L’Oreal.
