CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!

12/14/05

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, December 14, 2005, and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

MTV Networks and Microsoft Corp. announced yesterday they have teamed up on the design and development of a new digital music service called Urge.  Set to launch in the US in 2006, Urge will also be integrated into a forthcoming version of Microsoft Windows Media Player.  At launch Urge will offer more than 2 million songs, as well as well as MTVN programming and original content and a range of new tools.  Additional details about Urge will be unveiled in January at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

POW! Entertainment has acquired the exclusive rights and ownership in perpetuity to Stan Lee’s name, his likeness, brand and his signature slogans (Stan Lee Presents, Excelsior and Stan’s Soap Box).  POW has also picked up a majority of the intellectual properties created by Lee following his tenure as Marvel’s CCO, Editor-in-Chief, and Publisher and prior to founding POW Entertainment.  Under these agreements POW Entertainment has the rights to license and receive royalties from Stan Lee’s future and recent creations.  Marvel retains the exclusive rights to his former co-creations like Spider-man, The Hulk, Daredevil, X-men, Fantastic Four and other original characters and properties Lee created while at Marvel.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Studio Ghibli, the Japanese animation studio that was founded by director Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata noted for its anime production, has re-launched its website ( http://www.ghibli.jp/) . And with that comes news that Studio Ghibli’s next animated movie project will be Gedo Senki, directed by Goro Miyazaki the son of Hayao Miyazaki.  Currently slated for a July 2006 release in Japan, Gedo Senki is based on the book A Wizard of Earthsea, the first book in The Earthsea Trilogy, written by author Ursula K Le Guin.  If the Earthsea books are ringing a bell, that may be because the Sci-Fi Channel produced a miniseries version of the books about a year ago.  Studio Ghibli movies include Castle in the Sky, Spirited Away, Ghost in a Shell, Kiki’s Special Delivery and Howl’s Moving Castle, that latter of which was named the Best Animated Film this week at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards.

Relativity Media, IDG Films, Platinum Studios, and Arclight Films have raised financing for the feature film adaptation of Top Cow Productions’ Witchblade comic book character.  Production is set to begin in 2006 on two feature films, which will be shot back-to-back, based on the popular action/fantasy comic book.  Producers are Relativity principals Ryan Kavanaugh and Lynwood Spinks, Platinum Studios chairman Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, and IDG Films general partners Steven Squillante and David Lee. Executive producing is Top Cow founder Marc Silvestri and Arclight Films’ Gary Hamilton and Harrison Kordestani.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Disney Channel will premiere the holiday special, The Koala Brothers Outback Christmas, Wednesday, December 21 at 11a during the Playhouse Disney program block.  The special coincides with the recent introduction of The Koala Brothers licensed products at retail in the US headed up by Master Licensee Fisher-Price with products from Mattel Games, Lion’s gate Home Entertainment, Random House Children’s Books, and View-Master.

Cartoon Network will help ring in the New Year with an 8-1/2 hour marathon of the anime series Naruto, December 31, 2005, beginning at 230p.  The 17 episode event will be capped off with the premiere of a new episode of the series at 10:30p.  Naruto is distributed in the US by VIZ Media, LLC.

Oppositely, Noggin will celebrate the New Year with the premiere of the sixth season of the animated series Franklin, Sunday, January 1 at 10a, followed by a Franklin marathon 10:30a-4p.  The network will continue to roll out new Franklin episodes everyday at 10a through Friday, January 6.

Nickelodeon‘s SpongeBob SquarePants will debut in Mandarin on China’s CCTV on January 29, airing weekdays. An almost simultaneous launch of consumer products, slated to begin rolling out there in 1Q 2006, will complement the series debut.

Animal Planet ordered up a 1-hour documentary titled Jessica the Hippo from U.K.-based Oxford Scientific Films (OSF).  It is a real-life story about a hippo’s unusual bond with a game warden and his wife when they rescue and raise her.  It will debut internationally on Animal Planet next year. The show is being produced in South Africa.  OSF’s Caroline Hawkins and Animal Planet International’s Mark Wild are exec producers.  OSF is a division of Southern Star Entertainment UK.

MARKETING/LICENSING

PorchLight Entertainment has granted Genius Products, Inc., the exclusive DVD and video distribution rights in the US for 9 x 30m episodes of the preschool series The Secret World of Benjamin Bear.  PorchLight Entertainment has been managing the US TV, home video and merchandising rights for The Secret World of Benjamin Bear for the past year as part of an agreement with the series producer Amberwood Entertainment.

Zizzle Toys has appointed DIC Entertainment the global licensing agent for its new three-legged musical iZ electronic product.  DIC will develop a mass retail-driven merchandising program with product lines slated to launch in spring 2006 with additional categories available beginning back-to-school and holiday 2006.  First up will be a tween/teen/young adult-targeted merchandising program that will include video games, mobile phone applications and accessories, apparel, and collectibles.  In addition DIC will develop direct-to-DVD movies and additional product categories such as games, puzzles, activities, apparel home products and publishing.  Zizzle has also signed exclusive distribution agreements with Sega Toys in Japan and Korea, Grand Toys in Canada and Vivid Imaginations in Europe for the sale of iZ.

Movielink, a broadband video-on-demand service, has introduced Movielink Family ( http://family.movielink.com ) a new website specifically designed for families to download movies.  Movielink Family features a library of G and PG rated movies, documentaries and cartoons.  Movielink is an online movie download service available in the US, which is operated by Movielink, LLC, a joint movie-studio venture of MGM, Paramount, Sony, Universal and Warner Bros.
