THE QUEEN – In Theaters Now
Tune in Alert? Broadcast petitioners, led by FOX, who oppose the FCC’s March profanity rulings pertaining to the Fox Billboard Awards telecast, will get a chance to argue their case on television December 20. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in New York has granted C-SPAN the opportunity to televise the arguments. Each side will get 12 minutes to state their case, and the broadcasters are scheduled to file their briefs with the court today.
NBC will broadcast the holiday episode of Bravo’s Top Chef on its air December 30 at 8p. This particular episode of Top Chef is set to air tonight on Bravo. This will be the first time the broadcast side of NBC will carry an episode from this particular series from its sister cable network.
SOAPnet will air the first season of ABC Family’s Falcon Beach, starting with a two-hour episode on January 6 at 11a which will repeat again on January 7 at midnight. The series will then air Saturdays at noon and also on Sundays at midnight.
TNT has decided not to renew to Saved starring Tom Everett Scott. The show ran for just one season.
Program Partners, Inc. has cleared the teen drama Degrassi: The Next Generation in more than 60% of the U.S. as a syndication strip for a fall 2007 launch. This clearance includes all top five markets, eight of the top 10, and 18 of the top 25. The show has been cleared by the Tribune Broadcasting group, in addition to stations from Belo, Clear Channel, Granite, Gray, Hubbard, Pegasus and The CW PLUS stations. Currently airing its sixth season, Degrassi returns with new episodes on The N January 5 at 8p.
An announcement is expected today that ABC News and Yahoo will expand their current content relationship by providing additional clips, stories and features including video segments. Content from both Good Morning America and 20/20 will now be included in the deal. This is not an exclusive deal -Yahoo News also has content deals with other news outlets including AP and Reuters.
Nielsen Monitor-Plus released its advertising spending report. During the first three quarters of 2006, advertising spending increased by 5.1% over the same period last year. Internet advertising led with +49.2%, followed by Spanish-Language TV at +16.6%, National Newspaper +8.4% and Spot TV Markets size 1-100) was +7.4%. Network TV ranked ninth overall with an increase of +4.1%, while Cable TV came in at +1.3% and Spot TV (Market sizes 101-210) had a modest bump of +0.6%. Spot radio was down by -0.6% and Network Radio even further at -2.9%.
The race seems to be getting a little less predictable in the broadcast evening news numbers. For the week of December 4, NBC was again in front, as it has been, but this time by a fairly slim margin. It should also be noted this was the week NBC Nightly News presented the Monday 12/4 newscast with a single ad sponsor who took up a limited amount of commercial time. That particular newscast brought in 10.34 million viewers for NBC:
- NBC Nightly News averaged 9.116 million viewers
- ABC World News averaged 9.005 million viewers
- CBS Evening News averaged 7.455 million viewers
Sci Fi Channel is looking at a project called Avery House, from Tagline Television and Mark Burnett Prods., and produced by NBC Universal TV. The scripted drama revolves around a family who move into a haunted house, says Variety.
ABC has given a put pilot commitment for a drama called Pushing Daisies about a guy who can bring dead people back to life by a simple touch. The project is from writer Bryan Fuller and producers Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen via their Jinks/Cohen Co. and Warner Bros. Television, per Variety. FYI, this is the same pair behind ABC’s midseason drama series Traveler, of which ABC has ordered eight eps.
Two new projects at TNT, both dramas – Heartland from Warner Horizon TV and starring Treat Williams as a cardiac surgeon; and Grace from Fox 21 starring Holly Hunter as a cop who talks with an angel.
Fox has ordered up a comedy pilot called The Return of Jezebel James (working title) about two sisters with a vast age difference, who come together so one can carry the other’s baby. The project is from creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, who is also the creator of Gilmore Girls.
Larry the Cable Guy is getting his own show – an animated series for Comedy Central, according to Hollywood Reporter. So far, the cable network has ordered a pilot of the project, which will be written and produced by Larry along with writers Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow. In the project, Larry stars as the half-owner of a cable network; the other owner is a well-to-do lady with distinctly different views on how to run a station.
Matt Baxter joins Big Fish in the new position as VP/President, Multi-Platform Marketing. Matt’s roster of duties will include finding new technologies and new partners to increase the company’s array of services, researching new digital media platforms, managing projects involving multi-platform components, developing client marketing plans, as well as creating a non-broadcast video production unit.
Steve DeLorenzo is the new COO/CFO at Screenvision, reporting to Matthew Kearney, President/CEO. Based in New York, Steve will provide strategic leadership to the company’s executive committee in addition to heading the areas of finance, campaign management, operations, technology and human resources.
Ramon Escobar is leaving his position as Head of Programming at Telemundo as of December 31 to start his own production company. He has already signed a first-look content development deal with Telemundo that begins January 1, covering both English- and Spanish-language productions for the network’s broadcast, cable and digital platforms. An announcement has not yet been made concerning Ramon’s replacement but rumors point towards Carlos Bardasano Jr., a former Univision and Telemundo VP/programming development.
The Walt Disney Internet Group, which includes mDisney and Starwave Mobile, has upped Trish Halamandaris to VP/Marketing and Carrier Sales and Stan Liu to VP/Mobile Content Development. Trish will continue to manage the division’s carrier sales and marketing, and will supervise its consumer and partnership marketing and market research initiatives. Good morning. It’s Wednesday, December 13, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
In an effort to create more interest in the NFL Network among potential subscribers, the network has offered a free week of its programming to Cablevision and Time Warner Cable. The free week is available during the week of December 24-30 and if carried by the cable companies, would be on their expanded basic packages. While the free viewing will not include the game between the New York Giants and Washington Redskins, it will include both the Texas Bowl – Rutgers vs. Kansas State – on December 28 and the Insight Bowl – Minnesota vs. Texas Tech – on December 29. Neither cable operators carries the NFL Network, citing what they consider to be unduly high carriage fees. No news yet from either Cablevision or Time Warner if they will run the free week.
Tonight’s Finale:
NBC: The Biggest Loser at 8p
