Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, December 12, 2012, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Hasbro unites all its TV, film, short-form and commercial production content under Stephen Davis, President of LA-based Hasbro Studios. Davis will report to Hasbro CMO John Frascotti. Davis, who has helmed the worldwide TV development/production/distribution group for Hasbro Studios since its launch in 2009, will add to his purview Hasbro’s Film Group in LA and Hasbro’s Rhode Island-based studio, the latter of which produces its commercials and short-form content. Davis will be responsible for Hasbro’s multi-year feature film initiative, which includes Transformers 4 with Paramount, Stretch Armstrong with Relativity Media and Candy Land with Sony. Bennett Schneir, SVP/Motion Pictures, and Terry Scott, SVP/Cake Mix Studio in Rhode Island, will now report to Davis. Prior to Hasbro, Davis served as CEO, Family Entertainment Group. Previously, Davis led ITV Studios America-predecessors Granada America and Carlton America, mobile and online digital media company InfoSpace, TV production-distribution company Hamdon Entertainment, a joint venture between Carlton and Studio Hamburg (NDR), and has overseen TV programming, motion picture, live entertainment, new media and entertainment-related M&A activities for Merv Griffin’s company, The Griffin Group.


Producer John Cohen (producer – Despicable Me, exec. producer – Hop) signs on to produce the new CG-animated 3D Angry Birds movie, based on Rovio Entertainment‘s Angry Birds game. David Maisel, formerly Chairman of Marvel Studios and executive producer of Iron Man, will serve as executive producer on the movie. Produced and financed by Rovio Entertainment, the Angry Birds movie is slated to fly into theaters in summer 2016. Cohen previously served as VP/Production Fox Animation. He also worked with Blue Sky Studios on films such as Ice Age, Robots, Ice Age: The Meltdown and Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who.

Coolabi completes new publishing and licensing deals for its preschool property Poppy Cat, which was created by Lara Jones in her Poppy Cat book series. Under a new deal, Immediate Media will feature Poppy Cat in its new publication Sunshine, which will launch in March 2013. Poppy Cat will also appear in Kennedy Publishing‘s magazines Busy Time and Get Busy beginning this month. Also, signing on as a new licensee is Portico Designs, which will offer Poppy Cat branded on demand greeting cards that will be sold exclusively via beginning in March 2013. The Poppy Cat TV series is co-produced by Coolabi Productions and King Rollo Films. The series can be seen in the US on Sprout as well as on NBC Kids Saturday morning programming block, and in France on France5’s Zouzous kid strand.

One Direction new singing toothbrushes debut around the world (excluding North America) from Brush Buddies, a brand of licensed manual toothbrushes, and music merchandising company Global Merchandising Services. The Brush Buddies singing toothbrush line launched in 2001 with two products that featured two Justin Bieber songs, which was followed this year by new songs by Bieber and products featuring songs by Lady Gaga and LMFAO.

Lawless Entertainment enters into a licensing deal with Pioneer Balloons for Suzy’s Zoo, created by artist Suzy Spafford. The deal will see Pioneer Balloons develop a line of various balloon types (e.g. latex, foil, bubble, punchball) featuring art from three Suzy’s Zoo brands and characters, Suzy’s Zoo (aka Duckport), Little Suzy’s Zoo and Wags and Whiskers.


Nickelodeon Australia and Tennis Australia are teaming up for Kids Tennis Day in 2013. Under the new partnership, Nickelodeon Australia will produce entertainment for the free annual event, which is set for Saturday, January 12, 2013 and feature a range of family-targeted activities, including Nickelodeon characters such as SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer and a Slime Time Live stage show event, at The Rod Laver Arena Spectacular at Melbourne Park (8:30a-1p), as part of the Australian Open 2013. For more information about the event go to Kids Tennis Day was established in 2011 in association with Tennis Australia’s MLC Tennis Hot Shots program for kids.


Disney Channel premieres the new music video Holla At the DJ, which is performed by Hollywood Records recording artist 14-year-old Coco Jones, this evening, Wednesday, December 12, during its play of Shake It Up (7-7:30p). Ahead of the debut, the network will also feature a behind-the-scenes making of the music video in Radio Disney Total Access interstitials. Jones achieved her recording contract as the result of being a finalist on Radio Disney’s N.B.T. (Next BIG Thing). Additionally, Jones will perform Holla At the DJ during the 124th Rose Parade in Pasadena, California, which is presented by Honda, on Tuesday, January 1, 2012.

The Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop and E-Line Media announced the sponsors and partners for the 2013 National STEM Video Game Challenge (, which is designed to motivate interest in STEM learning (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) among American middle and high school students through their love of playing and making video games. For the third year, the AMD Foundation, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) return as sponsors of the Challenge. New partners signing on this year are the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the Hive NYC Learning Network, who will reach out to underserved youth nationwide through hands-on game design workshops and supplemental curriculum activities. Additionally, this year’s Challenge also brings together outreach partners and mentors who will be key in supporting youth and teacher participation, these new partners include BrainPop, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting PBS Kids Ready To Learn Initiative, Learning Games Network and Edmodo. The Challenge was inspired by the Educate to Innovate Campaign, President Obama’s initiative to promote a renewed focus on STEM education. This year, 3,700+ US students participated in the 2012 Challenge.

Silver Dolphin Books, a kid/young reader-centric imprint of Baker & Taylor Publishing, dives into the digital publishing arena with the acquisition of the app publishing rights to classic kid’s brands, Little Critter and Richard Scarry. Silver Dolphin Books will release a total of six new apps in 2013, also including those based on the new intellectual property, Astro B-1. The apps are all being developed by John Sansevere (Little Critter: Where’s My Frog) and will debut on both iOS and Android platforms. The new apps include:

  • Little Critter: The Trip  based on the books by author/illustrator Mercer Mayer’s Little Critter books, the new app is set for release in January 2013 and will feature preschool and early elementary curriculum-based games and activities, including identifying numbers, shapes, colors, patterns, letters and simple words, as well as telling time and solving simple equations.
  • Richard Scarry’s Busytown’s Busy Kids – set for release in spring 2013, this new app is based on Richard Scarry’s Busytown books celebrates everyday life and encourages kids to make their way through the Busytown world and help character solve problems and have fun, and experience stories. The property was created by Sansevere.
  • Astro B-1 – this new property is set on the tiny star Asteroid B-1, not far from the North Star and the Big Dipper and is designed to encourage users to learn to embrace and respect differences, resolve conflict and to get along with others, reflecting the notion that “it takes all types to make the world go round.”

DreamWorks Classics (f/k/a Classic Media) will release the animated Jackson 5ive TV series on Blu-ray and DVD  for the first time ever Jackson 5ive fans! The new Jackson 5ive: The Complete Animated Series DVD includes all 23 episodes, which features 46 original Jackson 5ive songs. Jackson 5ive: The Complete Animated Series ( will be available on DVD ($32.99), and as a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack ($39.99), from January 15, 2013. Produced by Rankin/Bass and Motown Productions, The Jackson 5ive animated series, very loosely based on the lives of the Jackson brothers and their manager, Berry Gordy, originally aired on ABC from September 11, 1971 – October 14, 1972.


Disney Channel‘s premiere of its 1-hour special Austin & Jessie & Ally: All Star New Year, a mash-up of its series Austin & Ally and Jessie, on Friday, December 7 at 8p, was the top TV telecast of the night across K2-11 (2.9 million), K6-11 (2.3 million) and Tweens 9-14 (2.0 million). The evening also included the network’s debut of the fourth season of Phineas and Ferb, which delivered the series biggest highs in almost four months (8/24/12) among K2-11 (2.2 million), K6-11 (1.8 million) and Tweens 9-14 (1.4 million).
