Cynopsis: DIGITAL
08.07.13
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, August 7, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Netflix has been steadily rebranding itself as a place for high-quality original content, recently snagging a few Emmy nominations for House of Cards and Arrested Development. It apparently is continuing that effort with the acquisition of the rights to the nine-episode Marco Polo series, being produced by the Weinstein Company and expected to be released next year, sources reports. The series follows the 13th-century adventurer’s exploits in Kublai Khan’s court.
In Other Words: Netflix is going to push forward in its rebranding as an original-content company that can keep pace with the likes of HBO.
Teen-oriented YouTube network AwesomenessTV, which was bought by DreamWorks Animation in May for $33 million, introduced folks at VidCon to two of the new web series coming in its next lineup. Expelled will follow a troublemaking high school student who figures out a way to disguise the fact that he’s been chucked out of school, and Side Effects is a musical drama focused on a teen girl who hallucinates song and dance numbers after medicating. Neither has a premiere date as of yet.
Univision has partnered with Quaker Oats to launch a digital destination for Hispanic moms, Fuente de Energia (Energy Source), that will feature a monthly web series starring Mexican pop singer and actress Jimena Gallego. It is part of the Univision site’s Vida y Familia section. Univision News is also launching a special projects section that will highlight in-depth, innovative features focusing on topics of particular interest to the millions of U.S. Hispanics that visit Univision.com and UnivisionNoticias.com and its mobile apps daily. One of the main subjects covered in the section will be immigration reform.
In Other Words: As the US Hispanic population grows, watch more and more Spanish-language web series (and mobile games and apps as well) to debut.
YouTube’s Geek Week has seen the debut of a new animated web series on the Geek & Sundry channel. Featuring the voices of Felicia Day of Buffy, the Vampire Slayer fame, and comedian Doug Benson, Outlands tells the tale of a bunch of misfit soldiers who are sent into space to “clear the outer planets of any life forms that may stand in the way of building shopping malls and multiplexes.”

Four major unions, including IATSE, the Directors Guild of America, American Federation of Musicians, and SAG-AFTRA all have voiced their support for Viacom in its ongoing $1 billion copyright infringement case against YouTube. The Google-owned company dismissed the support, saying that it was purely a recycling of the same statement the unions had made back in 2010 at another stage of the case. YouTube went on to say in a statement: “They don’t seem to have followed developments in the case or recognized the changes to YouTube’s place in the entertainment ecosystem. The Court has twice rejected Viacom’s unfounded copyright infringement claims. And even Viacom has conceded it doesn’t object to how YouTube has operated for the last five years. YouTube has signed licensing agreements with every major movie studio and record label, has developed an industry-leading Content Identification system used by 4,000 media partners, and does more to prevent piracy than any other major video hosting provider.”
In Other Words: This battle isn’t going anyway anytime soon.
Streaming video service Redbox Instant is now available on Roku and priced at $8 a month. For that price, consumers have access to the service’s more than 5,000 movies and pick up 4 DVD credits as well. If the consumer lives near one of Redbox’s thousands of kiosks across the country, they can use the credits there. Netflix is already on Roku for the same monthly price while Amazon Prime charges $80 annually on the device. (That’s $6.67 a month for those of you keeping score at home.)
Comcast is testing a cloud DVR app for the iPad and iPhone that subscribers can use at home when near a Comcast cable modem. The app is available on iTunes and will allow Comcast customers to have access to the cable company’s services on an iPad or iPhone.
News Distribution Network (NDN), a digital media exchange, is adopting Akamai’s Sola Media Solutions to power its offering of premium content, video, and ad serving, analytics and monetization services for online news publishers. NDN distributes thousands of hours of content to more than 4,500 publisher partners each month. The adoption of Sola should make it easier for news publishers to populate their sites with relevant high quality video, simplify NDN’s video-management requirements, and address accessibility of content across connected devices.
Nielsen has not only found that an increase in live TV viewership can cause an increase in tweets about the TV show but that the rise in tweets about a show can also cause viewership to rise. Using SocialGuide, a partnership between Nielsen and McKinsey & Co. that collects activity on Twitter related to all American TV programming, as a tool, the study found that a rise in ratings of a show drove up the tweets about the show in 48% of the episodes sampled. At the same time, a rise in tweets led to a rise in ratings in 29% of the episodes studied by Nielsen. Nielsen and Twitter will debut their Nielsen Twitter TV ratings, which will “measure the total audience for social TV activity on Twitter,” this fall.
In Other Words: If you had any doubt about the connection between tweeting and ratings, Nielsen’s here with the proof.
A new study shows that people who stream video on their TVs or mobile devices are generally pretty happy with the experience. However, the large majority, regardless of which device they stream the video onto, are streaming on their home WiFi network. The ForeSee Mobile Satisfaction Index says that consumers rate most categories and services of streaming-service apps as being between 75 and 80 on a 100-point scale. HBO Go and Netflix are at the top of the heap with 79, and Crackle and Hulu Plus are at the bottom with 75. Amazon Prime Instant Video slid in with a 78. However, of the 5,500 people surveyed this past June, 8% used the apps while away from home and 32% divided the app time between home and mobile use.
Marriott is launching a new mobile game, Xplor. After choosing an avatar from five different traveler types, such as backpacker and jet-setter, players can explore five cities – New York City, Paris, Beijing, Dubai, and Sao Paulo – and pick up Marriott Rewards points at the same time. One million games will be given away before November and three of the people who actually finish the game are promised to win “big prizes.”
In Other Words: Marriott is hoping that if Gen X and Millennials play the game, they’ll gain some kind of brand affinity. Time will tell.
Yodo1, a publisher of Western smartphone games to the Chinese marketplace, has announced that it will also publish select free-to-play games globally. Its first global title, Cavemania, will launch in mid-September. Yodo1 has been in China for less than a year and already has more than 50 million players on its games there.
Boingo Media has launched an advertising product, App Download, that allows brands to reward users with free WiFi access in exchange for verified downloads of their iOS or Android apps. It’s priced on a cost-per-install basis. App Download campaigns are already being run in high-traffic areas such as New York’s JFK, London’s Gatwick, and Chicago’s O’Hare airports as well as in the New York City subway system, among other locales.
Siemens is shifting its ad strategy to run more high-impact programs with fewer publisher partners. It’s kicking off with the launch of a new online campaign with the help of ad-management company DG and global strategic planning network PHD on sites like Bloomberg, Salon, Fox, and Time. Each publisher will be dedicating media resources to the Siemens brand. For example, Bloomberg will be creating a specific manufacturing channel that will be solely sponsored by Siemens. “Siemens incorporated video into each one of their high impact rich media units, running across desktop and mobile,” Craig Phillips, product marketing manager, rich media, at DG, told Cynopsis. “This not only combines the power of video, but drives product and brand awareness. For example, their Billboard unit has a video of beer filling up the ad and transitions to Schlafly Brewery manufacturing plant highlighting how their technology is transforming companies across America.”
Facebook has hired its first chief marketing officer. Gary Briggs, who was the chief marketer at Google’s Motorola Mobility, has been brought on to replace Eric Antonow, currently Facebook’s vice president of product marketing. Briggs also worked on marketing Google’s Chrome and Google+ and spent time as eBay’s vice president of consumer marketing… ThinkAnalytics has added Christy Martin as its chief technology advisor. The developer of a popular multiplatform TV search and recommendations engine has hired Martin, who previously worked at her own company, iBox Systems, as well as Canoe Ventures, Thomson (now Technicolor) and Canal+ Technologies.

AMC’s Breaking Bad is heading into its final eight episodes starting on August 11, but fans of the show are likely already trying to figure out what will happen to Walter White and his sidekick Jesse Pinkman. The folks over at Blip.tv apparently know the latter. A parody video has been posted that shares a preview of his spinoff show, Jessie!, which is “filmed before a live studio audience.”
