Good morning, it’s Wednesday, August 5, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Here we go again with calls of voter fraud. Yahoo admitted there were errors in the tabulation of votes for its standing board members by third party voting intermediary Broadridge Financial Solutions, inflating support for five of Yahoo’s nine directors by significant margins. Revised tallies revealed 33.7% of votes withheld for CEO Jerry Yang (up from the 15% originally reported) and 39.6% of votes withheld for Chairman Roy Bostock. The results of the ballots, however, remain unchanged. Minority shareholder Capital Research Global Investors, led by vocal Yahoo critic Gordon Crawford, called for the recount.
DirecTV is offering some iTV enhancements for golf fans this weekend. The PGA Championship Mix Channel (channel 701) features a quartet of channels including HD tournament coverage from CBS and TNT, featured group and hole coverage and a Players in Depth Channel with interviews, highlights, press conferences and up-to-the-minute stats.
VH1 muscled its way into the crowded landscape of celebrity news with Scandalist, a celeb/pop culture blog launching with – you guessed it – a list of the Top 100 Celebrity Scandals of all time. In case you’re curious, The Murders of Tupac and Notorius B.I.G. edge out the Monica Lewinsky Affair and the death of Princess Di.
CBS’s ad supported music streaming service Last.fm struck a partnership with Universal Music Group, CD Baby, The Orchard, IODA and others to create a Japanese version of the site. To kick off the service Last.fm is offering Japanese users exclusive access to Radiohead’s In Rainbows. Retailer HMV Japan will offer click through sales at the site.
Hulu increased its HD Gallery of shows adding a few full episodes of shows such as Heroes, The Office and 24 as well as nature programming, movie trailers and the entire Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. (Yep, Josh Wheaton is still giving it away for free.)
Granddaddy of web video news shows Rocketboom was acquired by Sony Pictures Television for a seven figure guarantee plus a share of future revenues generated from the show. Sony plans to distribute the show across multiple digital platforms including Crackle and its syndication network, the PS3, the PSP and Bravia internet video link televisions. Rocketboom is already one of the most widely distributed video blogs on the net, available via iTunes, Tivo, Apple TV, Pando, TVTonic and multiple web video portals including YouTube, Metacafe, blip.tv and Vuze.
Burlingame, CA-based HD-quality internet video delivery specialist BitGravity raised $2.5 million from Allen & Co. and Blake Krikorian, co-founder and CEO of Sling Media. BitGravity powers video delivery for a number of web 2.0 creators including Revision3 and Tom Green.
Federated Media Publishing and Microsoft teamed up to launch CrowdFire, a social networking platform for uploading, sharing and remixing music and musical performances with the festival scene as a sweetspot. Federated Media CEO John Battelle describes his vision of it as a happening enabler of sorts. Users are encouraged to send SMS, email and uploads of media directly into the CrowdFire database and media jockeys will create streams of CrowdFire imagery in real time, sent back out into the festival grounds through a network of digital screens. Groovy. Crowdfire will be on full display at the Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival in San Francisco on Aug. 22-24.
Toronto-based GS New Media announced it is adopting Project Darkstar, a new open source online gaming platform developed by Sun Microsystems, to develop a virtual world/social networking site for tweens and teens based around the live action series The Saddle Club.
Here’s another way to get video such as Netflix movie rentals over to your television: HP’s Expansion Base Docking Stations connect to any HP laptops and add a number of ports including an S-video out, allowing you to plug in peripherals without having to plug and unplug them every time you get up. The cheapest of these goes for about $100, while the more advanced costs over $300, including a DVD Rom drive. Simply connect an S-video cord to the back of your TV and you’re good to go. News Corp. reported revenue of $8.59 billion for Q2, up 16.5% over the previous year on income of $1.48 billion. Television was hard hit due to lower ratings and revenue, with income dropping 28%, while investment costs at Fox Interactive Media were high, driving operating income at FIM down to just $6 million. A silver lining was MySpace’s new contextual display advertising efforts; advertisers are paying double CPMs on hypertargeted branding campaigns within the social network.
Women’s fashion and lifestyle email newsletter DailyCandy was acquired by Comcast for a reported $125 million. The site sends out daily emails to some 2.5 million readers in 12 U.S. cities and London, England.
Google’s DoubleClick division is utilizing NBC Universal Digital Media’s herculean Olympics coverage to showcase In-Stream, a new capability to serve video ads within the Microsoft Silverlight 2 platform. The IAB-compliant system is designed to integrate with the reporting features of DART for publishers, provide a full complement of tracking metrics and accommodate a range of video ad effects including Shadow Ads, Bugs, Telescoping and Interactive Video elements.

Reality Television and internet video have proven to be a potent mix for Yahoo in recent months. Yahoo’s TV portal climbed to #1 on ComScore’s ranking of the top TV sites and posted record traffic numbers for the category in April and May about the time audiences started to bond with Prime Time in No Time, according to Yahoo Entertainment GM Sibyl Goldman. The daily recap show hosted by comedian Frank Nicotero (GSN’s Street Smarts) has become a morning ritual for fans who want to catch up on what happened on the reality shows the night before. The show peaks at around 4.5 million daily unique viewers (a huge number considering it’s not syndicated or embedded anywhere else.) PiNT has also become a must view for folks who don’t really watch reality fare but want to keep up with watercooler chat at the office, according to Ms. Goldman, who says celebrity gossip portal Omg! will be next to have a video show. Ah, reality television … the common denominator of American culture.
