Cynopsis: Kids!

08/04/10

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, August 4, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Twilight fans will have to wait a full year between parts 1 and 2 of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, which concludes the series.  Summit Entertainment announces it will release The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn  Part 2 in theaters on November 16, 2012.  The studio previously said Breaking Dawn  Part 1 will release on November 18, 2011.  Directed by Bill Condon from screenplays by Melissa Rosenberg, Breaking Dawn parts 1 and 2 will shoot simultaneously beginning this fall.  Meanwhile, Warner Bros. will release the Harry Potter two-part movie series finale less than a year apart, with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows  Part One releasing on November 15, 2010, followed by Deathly Hallows  Part 2 on July 15, 2011.

Teen singer Justin Bieber‘s life story will be the focus of a new book and a 3D feature film.  HarperCollins acquired the official illustrated memoir, Justin Bieber: First Step 2 Forever: My Story, which will publish this October in the US and UK.  Then, Paramount will release a 3D biopic (title TBD) about Bieber, per Deadline, on February 11, 2011.  The movie will feature Bieber as himself and is expected to include concert footage from his current tour.  Discussions are underway with Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth) to direct.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Warner Bros. and Unique Features have signed Brian Nathanson (The Occasionally Interesting Anti-adventures of an Unnamed Girl, The Many Deaths of Barnaby James) to re-write its family comedy Alien Zoo, per Variety.  A mixed live-action and CGI animated movie, Alien Zoo is based on an original idea by Dylan Sellers and is described as a combination of Jurassic Park with aliens.  The first draft of the movie was penned by Joe Stillman (Shrek, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief).

A new Babar movie is in the works as Twilight Saga movie producers Temple Hill’s Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey ink a deal with rights holders Nelvana and The Clifford Ross Company to adapt the property as a mixed live-action and CG movie, per Deadline.  Nelvana and Clifford Ross are producers of the new animated series Babar: The Adventures of Badou.  Created by French author/illustrator Jean de Brunhoff in 1931, and later taken over by his son Laurent de Brunhoff, Babar has been the subject of multiple books, and several animated series and movies.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Disney EMEA acquires the family-targeted Argentine series Nini (140×60) from Endemol Worldwide Distribution for satellite broadcast on Disney Channels in Spain, Italy, Israel, Central and Eastern Europe.  The series will broadcast in Central and Eastern Europe in Romanian, Bulgarian and Ukrainian.  Produced by Endemol Argentina and Kaberplay Productions for Telefe Argentina, the series stars noted actress/singer Florencia Bertotti (Floricienta) as Nini who takes a job as nanny for a new ambassador’s family until through a series of mishaps she loses her job.  In order to remain with the family she adores, Nini takes on a male persona and returns to the embassy in her new job as the ambassador’s new chauffeur and confidant.  Based on the success of the series in Argentina, where it premieres in September 2009, there are Nini stage shows/concerts touring across the country.  Additionally, a merchandising program for Nini is in full swing with 400+ items (e.g. t-shirts, hats, mugs, school bags etc.).

Nickelodeon looks at kids and the jobs they have outside of school in the new edition of Nick News with Linda Ellerbee, Workin’ It, which debuts Sunday, August 8 at 9p.  The episode looks at kids with various types of jobs including babysitting, working in a restaurant, being in the cast of a Broadway musical, and announcing baseball games.

Treehouse, Corus Entertainment’s preschool network, celebrates Dora the Explorer‘s 10th anniversary with the debut of the primetime TV movie, Dora’s Big Birthday Adventure, on Sunday, August 15 at 6-7p, the same day and date as its premiere on Nickelodeon US.  The special guest voice-overs by Rosie Perez, John Leguizamo, and Hector Elizondo.  Treehouse will also mark the Dora milestone at the Dora and Friend’s Celebration event at the CN Tower in Toronto this Thursday, August 5 (10a-3p).  Additionally, Treehouse and Nickelodeon Canada are set to launch the Dora pro-social campaign, Beyond the Backpack this month.

The Library of Congress and the Advertising Council launch a new series of family-targeted and reading-centric public service announcements (PSAs) featuring Curious George.  The TV and print PSAs aim to encourage parents to read to their kids, which, according to research conducted by Florida State University, makes kids more willing to read and increase a their willingness to read as well as comprehension.  The campaign, created in partnership with Universal Partnerships & Licensing and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company, also directs families to visit Read.gov ( www.read.gov ).

MARKETING/LICENSING

King Features Syndicate teams Betty Boop with the year-old United Football League (UFL) for a co-branded licensing program.  Betty Boop will be featured on a range of UFL ( www.ufl-football.com ) team-specific products.  Trevco Sportswear signs on as the first licensee and is developing co-branded UFL, team logos and Betty Boop T-shirts, beginning with Junior sizes, for this fall, the start of the UFL’s second season, which will be available at retailers in UFL cities, stadiums and local businesses and e-tailers.  UFL games will be broadcast nationwide on Versus and HDnet.  King Features is the worldwide exclusive licensing agent for Betty Boop, which was created by Max Fleischer in 1930.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Nickelodeon names Keith Dawkins to the expanded position of SVP and GM, Nicktoons and TeenNick.  Dawkins adds oversight of TeenNick to his current responsibilities as GM, Nicktoons.  He will continue to report to Sarah Levy, COO, Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group.  Previously, Dawkins was a Supervising Producer for VH1 News and prior to that as a Producer for Fox News Channel.
