Cynopsis: Sports
08/03/11

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, August 3, 2011, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

After Monday’s NBA lockout talks went nowhere, the league stepped up its game, filing a lawsuit in a with the National Labor Relations Board against the NBA Players Association citing unfair labor practices and claiming in a federal suit in Manhattan that  the lockout does not violate antitrust laws. The union refuted the league’s charges and stated that the lawsuit “totally without merit.” The federal lawsuit also adds that if the union decertifies in order to file an anti-trust suit, then every player contract would then become void and unenforceable. Ouch! The NBA season is slated to begin on Nov. 1,

On the Air

High schools games won’t appear on the Longhorn Network, at least for this year. Athletics directors for the Big 12 agreed to begin a one-year moratorium on the broadcast of any high school content (or any other content involving prospective student-athletes) via any medium branded as a Conference or member institution platform. In addition, no games will be permitted thereafter “unless and until the NCAA determines that such use is permissible.” The ADs also recommended that the Big 12 Board of Directors strongly request the NCAA Board of Directors establish a national moratorium for a minimum of one year in order for the entire NCAA membership to determine whether such use should be permissible under NCAA regulations.

The United States Olympic Committee has filed paperwork that could lead to a hosting bid on the 2020 Olympic Games. Although the USOC has maintained that any bid would be contingent on successful revenue-sharing discussions with the IOC, multiple people in the industry have said that the US has been “encouraged” to bid despite losing recent attempts to host the games in New York and Chicago. The submitted compliance forms are an IOC requirement ahead of the formal bid application, with countries having until September 1 to submit the names of applicant cities. Other countries that look to be in the running include South Africa, Italy, Japan, Spain. Turkey and Qatar.

AT&T has officially dropped ESPN 3D, citing a high price tag and low demand. The channel launched in 2010 and has showcases events ranging from the World Cup, the X Games, the 2011 NBA Finals as well as tennis, and college football and basketball. AT&T required subscribers to pay an extra $10 a month to receive the channel although carriers such as DirecTV provide ESPN 3D for free.

MLB Network’s Trade Deadline coverage this past week propelled viewership growth for the channel this year, with Sunday’s broadcasts averaging a 20% spike in homes and 17% more viewers than the network’s trade deadline coverage in 2010. Those numbers were good enough to make July 31 the highest-rated Sunday in MLB Network’s history. Overall, approximately two million people watched MLB Network’s Trade Deadline-specific studio programming throughout the week, to give the network 24 consecutive weeks of growth.

Back in full swing, NFL Network sent the press a fun fact sheet about their coverage since business resumed, with a numerical look at the channel’s training camp coverage over the past week.

According to the channel, the network has scored:

  • 6,165 minimum number of air miles to cover training camps.
  • 202% increase in viewership over the same week in 2010
  • 87 hours of live coverage
  • 32 NFLN talent on the air
  • 10 teams with practices aired live.

With the addition of Boise State to the Mountain West conference this year, DirecTV has shifted the conference’s The Mtn. to its Choice package and above in all Idaho zip codes. The Mtn. is set to air three Boise St. football games this year.

Media Day for the Big East kept coming back to expansion and television, with Commissioner John Marinatto saying the conference’s upcoming TV deal will be the most important in its history. Conference members are still mulling whether to continue expansion or not, and the conference put a hold on rights renewal talks with ESPN. The Big East has separate deals with ESPN for both football and basketball that expire in 2013.

The state of Connecticut is naming ESPN as the third company to become part of the state’s “First Five” program, which is designed to create jobs via incentives such as loans and grants to specific organizations. In return, ESPN will now add at least 200 more jobs in the state within five years with extra incentives in play for up to 800.

“Hard Knocks” may be taking a pass this season, but college football fans can get this fix of training camp with Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic’s upcoming show about the 2011 preseason camp for FCS team the Richmond Spiders. The series will chronicle the Spiders’ 2011 preseason camp, and will debut as a two-episode series on Sunday, August 21 and Monday August 22 at 9p, with the second episode airing Sunday, August 28 and Monday, August 29 at 9p.

Sponsorship & Promotion

John Korpics has been named ESPN’s Vice President/Creative Director for Print & Digital Media and will begin on Sept. 6. He most recently served as the Creative Director of Fortune magazine, and will now work with ESPN The Magazine Editor-in-Chief Chad Millman in overseeing the magazine’s design group, as well as provide long-term vision for the editorial integration of the design and photo teams across all platforms.

Hilton Worldwide announced that Hilton HHonors will be the official hotel sponsor of the Chinese Olympic Committee through 2019. The partnership marks the first time a multinational hotel company has supported the organization and makes Hilton Worldwide one of only two multinational sponsors for Team China.

Puma has signed on as a sponsor for America’s Cup, and will provide America’s Cup-branded merchandise beginning with this month’s series in Cascais, Portugal and continue through to the final America’s Cup races in San Francisco in 2013.

Digital Fields

EA Sports is offering fans the chance to get in the action early with the EA Sports Season Ticket. The yearly $25 subscription will give players priority access to EA Sports titles beginning with Madden NFL 12. GameStop will serve as the exclusive retail marketing partner of the Season Ticket application.

ESPN has signed on with news reader application Pulse for a content syndication deal that will deliver the company’s brand to Pulse’s mobile apps. Pulse has been installed more that 5 million times and the deal, according to Mashable, will include ESPN headlines as well as news and analysis from around the world of sports.

Rafael Nadal made his debut on Twitter yesterday, quickly scoring more than 70,000 followers by the afternoon. His Facebook fan page currently boasts nearly 8 million likes.

The Main Event

The Yankees and White Sox both look to gain ground in a clash on ESPN at 8p.

ON THIS DAY in 1949 – The Basketball Association of America and the National Basketball League merge to form the National Basketball Association

Answer to Yesterday’s Sports Trivia Question: When was the last time the Brewers won a pennant?  They won the AL pennant in 1982. Kudos: Ivette Herrera – Dial-Global/NY; Kurt Lundberg – Ogilvy/NY; Corey Goff – Turner Sports/Atlanta; Mike Hardy – ITN Networks/NY; Susan O’Sullivan – Laughlin Constable/Milwaukee; Jessica Schoep – STARZ Entertainment/Denver; Colette Carey – HDNet/Denver; Dennis Treleven – Fox Networks Group/LA; Paul Gygli – NBCUniversal Television Distribution/Universal City; Andrew Hilton – KPMR Univision, KTSB Telefutura/Santa Barbara; Patrick Reynolds – Reynolds Media Consulting/LA

In The Know:    Which Big East football team was the last to finish the regular season undefeated?  (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)

In My Opinion …

The upcoming Pac-12 networks are taking a look, the Longhorn network is taking a look, and now the NCAA is taking a look. Is high school sports on a university-branded TV network really a sly recruiting advantage or is it inevitable in a digital society desperate for content? The answer, of course, is both and I give props to the NCAA for quickly pulling together the summit to explore the issue. If a university or conference feels its brand is strong enough to carry a network, great, but how much more friction will the have-nots be able to handle? Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald said Thursday he was concerned about the potential negative effects of high school football games on Texas’ Longhorn Network calling it a “Pandora’s Box.” And that is literally what it is. Of course, I fully expect games to (eventually) be allowed.
