A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM WARNER BROS. DOMESTIC CABLE DISTRIBUTION
A Match Made in Heaven
ONLY YOU AND CUPID ARE THINKING WBDCD.COM WBDCD.COM: Get with the programming – online. CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, August 31, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing. According to Nielsen Monitor-Plus, advertising spending for the first half of 2005 was up 5.7% over the same period last year, due to gains across major media. Looking first at category spending, the 10 largest categories (automotive, pharmaceutical, restaurants, wireless phone, D.R., credit card services) spent $21 billion in the first half of the year, up 5.4% over last year across all major media. Nielsen says that most product categories are up year to year, with the exception of motion pictures and department stores, both of which were down slightly. Nielsen’s Product Placement tracking service shows ongoing growth in this arena with the top 10 brands in the category (Coke, Everlast, Gatorade, Toyota, Nike, Sierra Mist, Home Depot, Foot Locker, Boston Red Sox) tallying up 11,455 occurrences in primetime broadcast network television during the first six months of 2005. The top ten programs utilizing product placement were in rank order: The Contender, American Idol, Amazing Race, What I Like About You, The Apprentice, Road to Stardom, Extreme Makeover Home Edition, King of Queens, Fear Factor, and America’s Next Top Model. The first broadcast primetime premiere of the new season aired on Monday night. Fox’s Prison Break won its 8-10p block with a 4.6/12 A18-49 rating, dominating that demo category for the night according to final numbers from Nielsen Media Research. Among M18-49, Prison Break earned a 4.7/13. While it helps that all of the other broadcast networks were in wall-to-wall repeats for the night (with the long exception of ABC with preseason football), that’s still a pretty darn fine start for any new show, particularly for this time of year. Fox will re-broadcast the first two eps on Thursday. * MORE GOOD STUFF *
The premiere of Rome on HBO Sunday night drew 3.8 million viewers, delivering a 9.1/13 in the HBO universe. Comparatively speaking, that makes it the highest rated show on HBO since the premiere of Six Feet Under in June 2004 which drew a 9.4/14. MTV’s Video Music Awards pulled in more than 8 million viewers from 8-1130p on Sunday, and making it the most watched program for the week on basic cable among A18-49 for the week (see chart below). With that said, the draw was down from 10.3 million last year. Sundance Channel picked up a total of 21 independent films from three separate outlets – Zeitgeist Films Ltd., Palm Pictures and Strand Releasing. All of the films will make their US debuts on Sundance. Titles include Cowards Bend the Knee and James’ Journey to Jerusalem (both from Zeitgeist); City of Men from Palm Pictures, and The Nomi Song from Strand Releasing. BET and Wal-Mart are starting a joint venture to market BET content and branding in the megastore. BET will provide Wal-Mart with DVDs of its programming and content connected to urban-focused music and film releases. The DVDs will be branded as “BET Official” 2-packs and located in BET-branded areas and merchandising displays within Wal-Mart and SAM’S CLUB stores. The first DVD to hit shelves under the new agreement will be from rapper/producer Kanye West with his new CD “Late Registration”. * NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *
NBC has added John Leguizamo to the cast of ER as a new doctor on the team. He will appear in at least 12 episodes this upcoming season. MTV has ordered up additional seasons of two series: Nick Cannon Presents Wild’n Out and Date My Mom. Wild’n Out has received its marching orders for Season #2 after just five eps into season #1, perhaps because the show is #1 in the time period among P12-34 (Thurs. at 10p). MTV has ordered 10 eps for next season of Wild’n Out. As for Date My Mom from Reveille, the greenlight is for Season #3 after this show also delivers the 12-34 demo for the network. Cartoon Network has ordered 13 episodes of a new comedy project (as yet untitled) from Andre Benjamin, aka Andre 3000, aka the other guy of music duo Outkast. Benjamin has been developing this project together with creator/producer Tommy Lynch Co. and Moxie Turtle, according to Variety. The story is about a group of young musically gifted kids and the person who inspires them. Cartoon is looking at a Fall 2006 premiere. Fox has ordered a script for a project based on the Dirty Harry film franchise, currently titled McCabe from Wonderland Vision & Sound and Warner Bros. TV. According to Variety, the story is about a school teacher who becomes a cop so he can go after his wife’s murderer. Writer John Glenn will pen and exec produce the script. Correction : USA Network‘s drama project Psyche is from writer Steve Franks and Tagline Pictures. Steve was misidentified in yesterday’s edition. * EXECUTIVE MOVES *
Sesame Workshop has promoted Myung Kang-Huneke to VP/General Counsel. Myung will oversee the Legal Department and serve as Board Secretary to the Board of Trustees, reporting to H. Melvin Ming, Chief Operating Officer. Jamia Bigalow has joined Fox Cable Networks as VP/Affiliate Marketing, announced Todd Schoen, SVP/Affiliate Marketing and Affiliate Ad Sales, to whom she will report. Eric Schmidt will likewise join the Fox Cable Networks Affiliate Sales staff as Manager/Advanced Services, reporting to Staci Weiss, Director/Affiliate Sales. Jamia immediately becomes responsible for creating strategic marketing and promotions campaigns utilizing Fox Cable Networks’ 26 different programming networks. As such, she will oversee the development and execution of collateral sales and marketing materials to enable FCN’s hundreds of cable, broadband, satellite and telephony affiliates to expand their SD and HD multi-channel video, PVR, VOD, broadband and other consumer offerings. Eric will now work closely with Staci to develop advanced service offerings like high definition, video on demand, personal video recorder-based, broadband and interactive applications, among others, utilizing the core FCN video network offerings. Rainbow Advertising Sales Corporation announced the appointment of Hanna Gryncwajg to SVP/Advertising Sales and Marketing Strategy. Hanna is charged with overseeing the day-to-day operations for RASCO’s national ad sales offices in Detroit and Los Angeles and will direct integration and major marketing initiatives for Rainbow Media’s national networks, AMC, IFC and WE: Women’s Entertainment. She reports to Arlene Manos, President/Rainbow National Network Advertising Sales. * RATINGS *
Monday — A18-49 Analysis: The battle on Monday night in final numbers from Nielsen Media Research was between Fox and ABC – that is Prison Break and ABC Monday Night Preseason Football.
