Good morning. It’s Wednesday, August 2, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
TBS will launch a new original and interactive game show called Midnight Money Madness on August 28, airing as its title suggests, at midnight. The live show produced by Endemol will air four nights a week, Mon-Thurs, says Hollywood Reporter. As for the interactive portion – the contestants will be viewers at home who have registered their phone numbers to participate as potential game players. The contestants play over the phone by answering trivia questions for cash prizes. TBS has ordered 8 weeks worth of episodes.

Lifetime Television has picked up two new off-net comedies, both of which begin airing next week. Still Standing and Reba will join the network’s Monday through Friday schedule starting August 7. Lifetime will also premiere Desperate Housewives starting August 5 at 11p beginning with season #1.
The History Channel will debut its new series Where Did It Come From? a show that delves into the ancient origins of modern technology on September 7 at 8p. Dr. Michael Guillen hosts this exploration that finds parallels from the past and present.
The July sweeps results indicate just how competitive the landscape is becoming for broadcast evening news: ABC World News with Charles Gibson and NBC’s Nightly News tied with a 2.1/9 each among A25-54. NBC’s total viewers are still higher for the month at 7.7 million, while ABC’s total viewers came in at 7.4 million. CBS’ World News delivered a 1.8/8 among A25-54 and nearly 6.8 million total viewers.
Content from Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. is now available for download and purchase on Apple’s iTunes Music Store. Turner’s offerings include Cartoon Network’s Johnny Bravo, Adult Swim’s Aqua Teen Hunger Force and original episodes of the documentary series CNN Presents. Adult Swim has actually made available free video podcasts on iTunes for the last three months, and CNN has been featuring original podcasts in addition to Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer and Reliable Sources for more than a month for free.
The Gospel Music Channel is now carried on DIRECTV as part of its local channel grid in markets such as Dallas-Ft. Worth, Denver, Jacksonville and Philadelphia among others. Gospel Music Channel’s schedule includes artists’ biographies, music specials, live concerts, and hosted music video blocks highlighting all styles of gospel music targeted to all age groups and demographics.
Media General has sold off its four CBS stations in three separate deals. It was announced yesterday WDEF/Chattanooga will be acquired by Morris Multimedia Inc. for $22 million. WIAT/Birmingham and KIMT/Mason City will be picked up by New Vision Television for $35 million. Last week it was announced KWCH/Wichita and its three satellite stations would go to Schurz Communications Inc. All deals are pending FCC approval and are expected to be completed by year’s end.
Feller Broadcasting, LLC has just sold its three radio stations which serve the Sioux Falls, SD market to Backyard Broadcasting South Dakota, LLC. The stations include KWSF-FM (Flandreau), KSQB-FM (Dell Rapids) and KSQB-AM (Sioux Falls).
The CW has ordered up 8 episodes of a new competition/reality series called The Search for the Next Pussycat Doll. From Warner Horizon Television, a nationwide search will begin ASAP to find the participants. The show is expected to get on the air some time in the upcoming season. the winner of this show will become the newest member of the pop group.
Fox has ordered a pilot of a new comedy project from Amy Sherman-Palladino, the creative force behind the WB’s hit series Gilmore Girls. The premise is about two sisters who come together after years apart, when one of the sisters agrees to carry the other’s baby.
Judith A. McHale, President/CEO of Discovery Communications, Inc., will leave her post on December 1 to pursue her public affairs interests and involve herself more directly with discussions based on crucial domestic and global issues. Furthermore, she will assume a special advisory role to Discovery’s Founder/Chairman, John S. Hendricks regarding Discovery’s educational efforts and will continue her voluntary role as Chairman of the Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership. Discovery will conduct a search of both internal and external candidates for a new Chief Executive Officer to succeed McHale.
Bob Friedman joins @radical.media as President/Radical Thinking, the company’s new division which concepts, creates and distributes entertainment ranging from television, film digital media and other branded content across multiple platforms.
Sony Pictures Television International has promoted Klaudia Bermudez-Key to SVP/General Manager, Advertising Sales for the Latin American territory. Reporting to Andy Kaplan, President/International Networks and T.C. Schultz, SVP/Managing Director, Latin America, Klaudia will be based in the company’s Miami headquarters.
The USA Network has upped both Lindsay Sloane and Michael Sluchan to VP/Original Scripted Series Programming, reporting to Jackie de Crinis, SVP/Original Scripted Series Programming. Michael will continue to manage the production elements for the series Monk as well as develop new programming, and Lindsay will continue to oversee production for The Dead Zone, The 4400 and Psych.
Tom Halleen is the new SVP/Programming and Scheduling at AMC. Reporting to Rob Sorcher, EVP/Programming, Packaging and Production, Tom will supervise the network’s program acquisitions, scheduling, media planning, in addition to directing the operations teams.
Initiative Worldwide has assigned Robert FitzGerald to the position of EVP/Managing Director for the company’s North America East Coast region. Robert will manage daily operations for the East Coast division with special focus on the company’s media planning and buying. Also in charge of Initiative’s New York agency where he will be headquartered, Robert reports to Richard Beaven, CEO/Initiative North America.
NBC Universal has named George Kliavkoff as its first Chief Digital Officer. Starting in September, he will oversee the company’s digital media strategy and develop new business models and markets, as well as manage the operations of NBCU’s new broadband and wireless initiatives among other duties. George reports to Beth Comstock, President, NBC Universal Digital Media and Market Development and is based at the company’s New York headquarters.

Monday – A18-49 Analysis: CBS, slightly up from last week, brought home another win Monday night with 3.0/9 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. FOX was #2 at 2.7/8, followed by ABC 2.0/6, NBC 1.6/5, UNIV 1.6/5, UPN 0.9/3, WB 0.6/2 and TELE 0.5/1. CBS led the 8p hour with a combination of The King of Queens/How I Met Your Mother averaging a 2.4/8. FOX was on fire at 9p with a new Hell’s Kitchen that topped the charts at 3.7/10. Then at 10p, CBS took the lead again with an encore episode of CSI: Miami at 3.6/10. Also at 10p, ABC’s premiere of the steamy beach drama One Ocean View came in fourth with a less than steamy 1.5/4.
