Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, August 24, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

This week marks the expansion of Nickelodeon in Central, East and West Africa on DStv (channel 305), under a new deal between MTV Networks Africa and Multichoice Africa.  The channel will be available to viewers in sub-Saharan Africa on the DStv Premium, Compact Plus, Compact, Family and Access bouquets.  Programming on the new channel Nickelodeon channel will include shows such as SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer, Victorious, Big Time Rush and iCarly and Bubble Guppies, among others.  Nickelodeon, which made its initial launch in southern Africa in July 2008, is broadcast in 47 countries across Africa, and will now reach 3 million households across sub-Saharan Africa.  Further information about the programming lineup can be found at


Tiny Island Productions, a Singapore-based Stereoscopic 3D CG animation production company, is working on production of the new Cartoon Network Asia CG animated TV movie Ben 10: Destroy All Aliens (1×66), which will premiere on Cartoon Network channels around the world in 2012.  Tiny Island has teamed up with director Victor Cook and Silas Hickey, Creative Director/Animation, Turner Broadcasting Systems Asia Pacific to produce both the stereoscopic 3D and non-stereoscopic versions of the new Ben 10: Destroy All Aliens TV movie, penned by Marty Isenberg.  Ben 10 was created by Man of Action.


CBBC (UK) will launch Sam & Mark’s Big Friday Wind-Up, its new prank, hidden camera and games-filled series, this September 2011.  Hosted by the singing and CBBC hosting duo Sam & Mark, Sam Nixon and Mark Rhodes, the big lead into the weekend series will also feature celebrity appearances, live musical performances, and sketches.  The show will also surprise two families in the audience each episode to complete for a chance to “Win the Presenter.”

Fans will get their first nibble of The Hunger Games movie when Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone, X Men First Class), who stars as the protagonist Katniss Everdeen, introduces exclusive footage from the movie during the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards (VMA).  The 28th annual VMAs will air live from the Nokia Theater in LA on Sunday, August 28, at 9p.  Directed by Gary Ross, the Lionsgate movie is based on Suzanne Collins’ young adult book of the same name and is set for release March 23, 2012.  The Hunger Games clip will then be available at ( ) following its VMA premiere.

The Hub is set to premiere and sneak peek new original series, as well as debut new seasons of returning shows and welcome other series to its lineup next month, as well as special programming stunts.  September 2011 programming highlights include:

  • Friday, September 2 – the second season of The Hub’s original series Family Game night premieres with back-to-back hour-long episodes at 7p and 8p.
  • Saturday, September 3 – the network offers a sneak peek of two new original series: The Game of Life, a live action family game show with 3D elements based on the board game, at 4p. The series, which officially premieres September 17 at 6p, is hosted by comedian Frank Nicotero (The Sharon Osbourne Show, Street Smarts, Primetime in No Time); Scrabble Showdown – a game show that challenges families to work together to solve word games/puzzles, which is hosted by Justin Willman (Hubworld, Cupcake Wars), at 4:30p.  Scrabble Showdown gets its official premiere on September 17 at 6:30p.
  • Monday, September 5 (Labor Day) – Family Game Night marathon 10a-7p
  • Tuesday, September 6 – joining the network’s schedule are Batman: The Animated Series at 5p and Goosebumps at 5:30p.
  • Monday, September 12 – season two of the network’s original series The Adventures of Chuck & Friends debuts at 11a
  • Monday, September 19 – joining the network this day is the syndicated series Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? at 8p and 8:30p.
  • Friday, September 23 – the network’s new original reality series Majors & Minors premieres 8-9p.

Atlantyca Entertainment‘s 3D HD CGI animated preschool series Dive Olly Dive! is featured all this month in Italy on Boing.  Dive Olly Dive!, a coproduction of Mike Young Productions, Flying Bar Productions (Australia), KI.KA, ARD (Germany), Telegael Teo (Ireland), Atlantyca Entertainment (Italy), and GDC (China), is airing seven days a week on Boing at 7:30a as part of a two-hour Cartoonito programming block that has been running during the school summer vacation.  Furthermore, Dive Olly Dive will joint the programming line up of the new Cartoonito channel, a 24/7 free digital terrestrial TV channel that is making its debut in Italy at the end of August.  The Boing and Cartoonito channels are both joint ventures between Turner Broadcasting System Italy and Rti (Mediaset).  Dive Olly Dive! premiered in Italy on Boomerang earlier this summer.

Discovery Communications partners with Imagine Tomorrow, a provider of computer classes for younger kids, to launch the new online educational program Discovery Kids Puterbugs ( ).  Targeted to kids 8 and younger, Discovery Kids Puterbugs is designed to encourage kids to use technology to solve problems and build skills as they undertake 30-minute interactive missions.  The interactive program, which features a Mr. Scott, a live-action teacher and guide, also educates about tech etiquette, including the top 100 computer and internet skills, such as basic file navigation, internet and keyboarding skills and understanding the newest technology, like mobile apps and cloud computing.  The deal was brokered on behalf of Discovery Communications by Big Tent Entertainment, the North American licensing agent for the Discovery Kids brand.

Bulldog Licensing reveals that the characters Roobarb and Custard, the dog and cat stars of the animated series Roobarb and Custard Too, will serve as the brand ambassadors for the UK animal charity PDSA (People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals). Roobarb and Custard will be featured in various online and retail activities, as well as a text campaign that will allow mobile users to receive a free Roobarb and Custard screensaver in return for donations.  The characters were already featured on a line of PDSA I Love Dogs and I Love Cats T-shirts from licensee Poetic Gem.  The PDSA provides medical care for 400,000+ pets annually.  Created by Grange Calveley in the 1970s, Roobarb and Custard were initially the stars of the BBC animated series Roobarb.  In 2005 the cartoon duo debuted returned to TV in the UK in Roobarb and Custard Too on Channel Five.


American Greetings Properties (AGP) promotes two.  Matt Schweitzer is upped to Sr. Brand Manager handling Care Bears and Strawberry Shortcake.  Schweitzer will work internally and with external partners, domestically and internationally, to drive business for both properties.  Gabrielle Oliff is promoted to VP/Brand and Marketing.  She will lead development of AGP’s global branding, marketing and public relations programs, as well as overseeing strategy and execution, business development and strategic partnerships for its existing and future properties.

Xilam names Erick Rouille as EVP/Sales, reporting to founder and President Marc du Pontavice.  As the new head of international sales for Rouille, who is based at the French animation company’s Paris Studio, will be supported by current Sales Manager, Laurence Marty.  With this new appointment Xilam will consolidate and bolster its Brand Management strategy combining TV Sales and Licensing.  Rouille previously toiled for Planeta Junior, Saban Consumer Products DreamWorks Home Entertainment and Disney.  Xilam is currently focusing its distribution efforts on properties including the new series Floopaloo, Where are you? (52×13 or 26×30), the slapstick comedy Zig and Sharko (78×7 or 26×30), and the comedy The Daltons (78×7 or 26×30).
