CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

08/24/05

Good morning.  It’s Wednesday August 24, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.  (We’re using a new server this morning. Didn’t and don’t expect any kinks, but if there are – you know why.)

The 700 Club continues to air on ABC Family via a long-standing contractual agreement it inherited as part of its purchase of the network from Fox Family Channel.  Fox Family had the same agreement when it purchased the network from Pat Robertson.  After Robertson’s comments on Monday nights edition of The 700 Club in which he called for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, ABC Family issued a statement saying they have no editorial control over the show, or the comments made by Pat Robertson or any of the show guests. The statement went on to say ABC Family “strongly rejects the views expressed by Robertson” and then directs all inquiries and comments to the Christian Broadcast Network.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

Feel like your town’s name could use a little pick-me-up?  Would you consider renaming it “Dish”?  If you do, Echostar Communications’ Dish Network will be delighted to come in and provide every home in your town free satellite service for the next ten years. So rename your town, change all the signs, get the free TV service, and have every cable homeowner in town take the equivalent of their monthly cable bill and put it in the town’s education fund.  (Okay, the last part is my idea, the free service, that’s EchoStar’s idea.)

National Geographic Channel‘s two part miniseries Inside 9/11 which aired on Sunday and Monday evening last, was host to more than six million viewers total viewers, with 3.5 million in the A25-54 demo.  Part One: War on America earned a 2.5 HH rating and a 2.0 A25-54.  Part Two: Zero Hour upped the ante with a 3.6 HH rating and a 2.9 A25-54 rating, ranking it #1 cable network from 9-11p on Monday night in that demo. It also ranked #2 among M25-54 with a 3.3 rating.  The miniseries will be re-aired three times – 8/26 at 7p, 9/8 at 7p and on September 11 at 1pm.

Sunday night’s series finale episode of Six Feet Under on HBO drew 3.9 million viewers and earned an 8.9/13 in the HBO universe

Program Note:  Come September 9, WWE Smackdown gets a new night and a new name.  Airing on Fridays this fall, the wrestling series will be retitled Friday Night Smackdown!  Makes sense.

IAG Research’s Top Ten Most Recalled New Ads and Top Ten Most Liked New Ads for new campaigns airing during the month of May (7/18/05-8/14/05).  The list is ranked by viewers’ ability to recall the new ads (or how much they like them) and their associated products and brands. The Recall Score is the percentage of TV viewers who can recall within 24 hours the brand of an ad they were exposed to during the normal course of viewing TV.  The Likeability Score is the percentage of TV viewers who report to like “a lot” an ad they were exposed to during the normal course of viewing TV (among those recalling the brand of the ad).  For example, with a Likeability Index of 182, the top ranked Kodak spot has proven to be 82% more liked than the average new commercial during the past four-week period. The scores are then indexed against the mean score for all ads during the time period to create the Recall Index; 100 is Average. For example, with a Recall Index of 241, the top-ranked Febreze spot was nearly two and a half times as memorable as the average new ad during the four week period.

* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *

ESPN will be bringing back Stump the Schwab (Inward Eye Ent.) for a third season with host Stuart Scott.   With that news, they will also be looking for sports fans and fans of the show to be contestants!  If you’re interested, check out http://www.espn.go.com/eoe/STS/  for an application. But be forewarned – last season Schwab was only stumped 4 in 78 attempts, so you better know your sports stats and trivia!

* RATINGS *

Monday — A18-49 Analysis: ABC and CBS tied on Monday night in fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research.  Fast affiliate ratings measure time period numbers – not program numbers.  When the final numbers come out, ratings for live sports events or other live broadcasts, will likely change.  To that end, ABC and CBS each earned a 3.1/9 A18-49 rating – CBS for its standard lineup of sitcoms and CSI Miami (all in repeats), and ABC with its preseason Hall of Fame game. At 8p ABC was in front with a 3.3/10, outpacing CBS by two share points, and Fox by 3 share point.  At 9p CBS’ back to back eps of 2-1/2 Men won the hour with a 3.4/9, tho ABC was not far behind with an 8 share. A repeat of CSI Miami at 10p delivered the win for CBS with a 3.3/9, while the final hour of football scored a 2.8/8.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
79- In southern Italy, Mount Vesuvius erupts, devastating the prosperous Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.  After the initial explosion, clouds of toxic gas and an avalanche of mud and rock killed the thousands who remained in the two cities.  Their bodies lay undiscovered until the eighteenth century.  The subsequent excavation of the cities yielded rich detail of everyday life in the Roman world.  Today, everyday life goes on for the 700,000 people who live within reach of Vesuvius, which remains an active volcano.
