Good morning. It’s Wednesday, August 23, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
MTV and Nickelodeon have graduated to full movie labels under the Paramount Motion Picture Group as part of Viacom’s newest structural change. Prior to this MTV and Nickelodeon acted as on-lot producers at Paramount. Scott Aversano will serve as President, MTV Films and Nick Movies. Nick Movies is currently in pre-production on The Spiderwick Chronicles, based on Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black’s book series, and is set to release a live action version of E.B. White’s book Charlotte’s Webb December 2006. MTV’s upcoming releases include Freedom Writers, Jackass: Number 2, and with DreamWorks the comedy Blades of Glory with Will Ferrell and Jon Herder (Napoleon Dynamite). PMPG’s other movie labels include DreamWorks SKG, Paramount Vantage and Paramount Classics.
It’s two, two, two-ads-in-one! YouTube, the website where folks can watch and share videos, has unveiled its new advertising strategy that includes the launch of Participatory Video Ads (PVA) and Brand Channels, which are designed to offer advertisers and marketers an opportunity to focus on specific products, while providing a way to interact with that content. YouTube’s first brand channel partner is Warner Bros. Records which has created the YouTube Paris Hilton Channel to support Paris Hilton’s debut album. The channel features re-playable video content including a message from Hilton created specifically for the site, and behind-the-scenes of her music videos. In addition the Hilton channel is being sponsored by Fox through a PVA that promotes the new season of its series Prison Break, which also includes video content. The PVAs are user initiated and can only be activated by clicking on the ad. Once activated, a user can rate, share and comment on the videos. YouTube’s advertising also includes banner ads, promotions and sponsorships.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Harry Potter fan sites are abuzz with rumors that Jessica Stevenson (Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, Shaun of the Dead, Confetti) might just be the actress cast to play Mafalda Hopkirk in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which Warner Bros. is set to release on July 13, 2007.
MORE KIDS STUFF
PBS Kids has picked up PorchLight Entertainment’s preschool series, Jay Jay the Jet Plane, through June 2009. Jay Jay launched on PBS Kids in June 2001 and is currently seen on 220 PBS member stations.
VIZ Media, LLC has inked deals with terrestrial broadcasters in Latin America for its anime series Naruto and Zatch Bell. America TV (Peru) has acquired 52 episodes of each series; TV Globo (Brazil) picks up 52 episodes of Zatch Bell; and Televideo Services picks up 52 episodes both shows for Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Honduras.
B*tween Productions has launched a revamped website based on its tween girl-targeted book series, The Beacon Street Girls. The new site is designed to offer fans an online community as well as new content, games, activities and a new club, all focused on Beacon Street Girls stories, characters, trivia. The site is also home to the newly launched Club BSG, which is free and open only to girls under 17, where girls they can interact with other BSG fans, get inside information, get special offers and take part in contests. In addition, some members will be invited to join the BSG Tween Advisory Board, which currently has 3000 members across 40 countries. Launched about two years ago, the books follow five 12-yr-old girls as the encounter and deal with tween related issues like friendship, arguing, loss, self-esteem and differences of various kinds.
Broad Bell Broadcast and New Media Fund have agreed to fund the corresponding website to the preschool TV series Harry and his Bucket Full of Dinosaurs. Produced by CCI Digital, a unit of indie production/distribution company CCI Entertainment, the Harry and his Bucket Full of Dinosaurs website will allow kids to create up to 240 mini-games. Broad Bell also provides funding for two other websites produced by CCI Digital, which are both based on YTV’s series, Ghost Trackers and its upcoming series Erky Perky slated to bow this fall. CCI Digital is also currently developing other projects including Bands and the Tank, a multi-platform tween targeted sports brand. Created in association with Smiley Guy Studios, a Flash animation studio, CCI is also partnering with Starbridge Media, a sports marketing agency, to sell the series to minor and major leagues baseball teams across North American.
MARKETING/LICENSING
National Geographic Digital Motion, the stock footage service of National Geographic Digital Media, has tapped Thought Equity as the exclusive online distribution partner to complement its existing licensing business. Under the deal the National Geographic Collection will provide production companies with real time access to its movie/video content via Thought Equity’s website. Digital Motion is the digital archive and licensing service for all National Geographic film and video.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Scott Aversano has been appointed as President, MTV Films and Nick Movies, Paramount’s new movie labels. Aversano will be responsible for film development, production and acquisitions for the labels. Aversano will report to Gail Berman President, Paramount Pictures. For image- and brand-related matters he will also report to Van Toffler, Group President, MTVN Music Group, and Cyma Zarghami, President, Nickelodeon and MTVN Kids and Family Group. Prior to this Aversano was an independent movie producer for Paramount. Previously, he was President/Production, for producer Scott Rudin, where he served as Executive Producer on The School of Rock and Team America, and Co-Producer of Nick Movies’ Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events.
Diane Nelson has been named President, Warner Premiere, Warner Bros’ new direct-to-DVD production unit. Nelson will report to both, Kevin Tsujihara, President, Warner Bros. Home Ent. Group and Jeff Robinov, President/Production, Warner Bros. Pictures. Nelson and Warner Premiere will develop, produce and market feature length films tapping into known creators, talent, brand equity, and sequels/prequels to existing Warner Bros. properties. Warner Premiere will produce up to 15 titles a year, the first of which is Dukes of Hazzard II, a sequel to theatrical release Dukes of Hazzard (2005), will be released spring 2007. Nelson was most recently, EVP/Global Brand Management, Warner Bros. Entertainment. She previously served in a range of senior roles for Warner Bros. including as EVP/Domestic Theatrical Marketing for Warner Bros. A new head of global brand management will be named shortly.
Olivier Gers has been appointed as GM/FremantleMedia Licensing Worldwide. He will be responsible for developing product and promotional relationships to enhance and extend FLW’s properties on and off screen, including brand licensing, music publishing, online and interactive, sponsorship, live events and telephony. Based in NY, Gers will report to David Ellender, CEO, FremantleMedia Enterprises, with whom he will work to establish the strategic direction for ancillary rights within the newly-created FremantleMedia Enterprises Group. Gers moves up to GM from his previous role as EVP/FLW, Americas. Previously, Gers founded and led two different start-ups, Odaddy.Com, an online parenting community for dads that put things in ‘guy-speak,’ and Fulcrum Group, a consultancy.
Channel One, the teen centric news/public affairs in-school content provider, has named three new anchors for the network for the 2006-07 season. Each comes with experience in covering a mix of current affairs and public policy: Eileen Wu most recently worked an online news agency at the United Nations; Meka Nichols joins the network from a TV channel in the US Virgin Islands reporting on Capitol Hill and the Supreme Court among other topics; and Alexander Marquardt has lived and traveled throughout the Middle East and Europe, he has also worked on the Today show, the Macy’s Day Parade and coverage of the 2006 Olympic Games. Wu, Nichols and Marquardt join returning anchor Cali Carlin. Channel One’s previous on-air talent has included Lisa Ling, Anderson Cooper, Serena Altschul among others.
