Digital ad solutions provider YuMe partnered with research firm Frank N. Magid Associates to conduct an online survey of 736 connected TV owners and users in May and July of this year. Among the findings, 87% of connected TV users notice ads on the platform; 57% notice pre-roll ads; 66% report that they’re likely to interact with a relevant ad; and roughly 20% indicate that they’ve purchased a product as a result of an ad they’ve seen on a connected TV. In addition, the study reveals that when it comes to short-form content, 59% of connected TV consumers prefer 15-30 second ads over a monthly subscription or pay-per-view model, while 44% of connected TV users prefer watching an ad-supported stream of a TV show rather than via a paid, ad-free model. Other notable findings include:
- 67% of respondents said they watch professionally produced, full-length and short-form videos that are unavailable on regular TV or cable.
- 26% of connected TV consumers stream short-form content multiple times a week; 24% of users watch TV shows on networks; and 29% stream TV through the internet.
- When it comes to movies, connected TV consumers prefer the subscription or pay-per-view models.
Popular shoe brand Nine West has launched Channel 9, a new online video network of sorts for which the company plans to offer a wide array of shoe- and fashion-related original programming, from profiles of shoe addicts and red carpet reporting to how-to videos. The content will be accessible through Channel 9’s own microsite, a branded YouTube channel (not part of the site’s premium channels initiative), and through branded Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr pages. Series available to watch on the network at launch include: You’ve Been Schooled: Fashion Shoot 101, which features reality star Kelly Cutrone and other style experts dispensing advice about how to prepare for photo shoots; Shoe Fix, which offers advice on how to pick the right shoes as well as DIY repair tips; and Confessions, in which celebrities will chat about their favorite pairs of shoes and users will be invited to submit their own stories. The content for Channel 9 is produced by Hud:sun Media, the production studio behind Bravo’s Pregnant in Heels and Oxygen’s I’m Having Their Baby.
The BBC has no plans at the moment to bring its iPlayer to the Windows Phone, according to what Daniel Danker, GM/Programmes & On Demand, BBC, told Engadget in an email. Danker cites the device’s lack of support for HTTL Live Streaming and a “bug” in the smartphone’s software that prevents content from being played on the device, even when accessed through the mobile web, as reasons why.
UK-based social TV company Zeebox is set to cross the sea and launch in the US. According to a report from TechCrunch, Zeebox will soon announce a deal with Comcast, and potentially also Time Warner Cable, through which it will provide both cable operators access to its social TV technology for their existing mobile apps, as well as launch its own app in the market. Comcast’s deal with Zeebox would also include an investment in the company (unsure if Time Warner Cable’s partnership with Zeebox would include the same). Zeebox’s mobile app allows TV viewers to see what their friends are watching, follow social conversations and interact with others around shows, access additional information on a program, and has an m-commerce capability that allows users to buy things they see on TV.
Hearst Digital Media has partnered with mulu to launch the muluBox shopping widget on Seventeen.com. The muluBox, which will be interspersed across all types of content on Seventeen.com, allows users to buy any product that is mentioned in any video, slideshow, or article on the site (here’s an example of it in action). In doing so, users will also be able to support STOMP Out Bullying, a national anti-bullying organization, which will receive a portion of every purchase made through the muluBox. After a user makes a purchase, they will be able to share the muluBox on their own personal webpage or blog to further support the organization and the cause. The two companies say the muluBox will launch on other Hearst sites in the coming months.
Mobile ad company Jumptap is partnering with Evidon to create and implement the Digital Advertising Alliance’s (DAA) AdChoices icon into mobile web and in-app ads. Through this partnership, Jumptap’s mobile ads will notify consumers when they are targeted with behavioral data. If the consumer clicks on the icon, he or she will be directed to Jumptap’s Privacy Overview page, where they can access additional information about targeted mobile ads and opt-out if desired. The icon will be deployed through Evidon’s ad-notice platform, which the company says serves over 50 billion notices a month.
The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) has announced the finalists for its 2012 MIXX Awards. This year’s nominations feature 111 finalists from around the globe and a new award category, the IAB Standard Rich Media Display Ad, which the Bureau says reflects the marketplace’s “significant adoption” of its Rising Stars display ad formats. Also new to the Mixx Awards this year, Nick Law, Global CCO of R/GA has agreed to be the Chair of this year’s judging panel, the first time such a position has been established for the committee.
Gannett has acquired social marketing solutions provider Blinq Media for an undisclosed price. “Blinq will enhance Gannet Digital Marketing Services’ ability to deliver a one-stop shop for all marketing needs, including social marketing,” said Gracia Martore, President and CEO of Gannett, in a statement. Per the deal, most of Blinq’s core business operations will remain unchanged. Its headquarters will remain in NY; its technology, finance, and marketing groups will stay in Atlanta; its sales and support offices will continue in London, Chicago, Boston, LA, and San Francisco; and it will still work with brands and agencies to develop and manage social marketing campaigns, but now as an official Gannett business unit. Blinq’s CEO, Dave Williams, will report to Vikram Sharma, President and CEO at Gannett Digital Marketing Services. Blinq was one of the first companies to gain access to the Facebook Ads API and is a Preferred Marketing Developer for the social network.
In more social marketing-related news, social/mobile engagement solutions provider ePrize has been bought by “consumer-focused” private equity firm Catterton Partners. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. However, ePrize’s current leadership team, led by CEO Matt Wise, will remain intact. “With Catterton’s consumer insights and operational and financial expertise, we can further accelerate our growth and innovation in helping companies engage their consumers through online, mobile, and social means,” he said in a statement. Wise also said that ePrize currently serves over 800 clients, including a majority of Fortune 500 companies and 60% of the largest ad agencies.

The initial success of Microsoft’s Windows 8 and Windows RT devices will depend largely on its price, according to ABI Research. Since the devices won’t be launched until October, the firm first estimates that Microsoft will capture 1.5% of total tablet shipments for 2012. Looking ahead, if Microsoft prices the tablets closer to current Android devices, ABI expects 2013 shipments to increase 10-fold year-over-year. However, if Microsoft tries to price it against Apple’s iPad, Windows tablet shipments may only double or triple in 2013. ABI Research also points out an opportunity for Microsoft to gain a strong foothold in the tablet market by being more enterprise-friendly. “Neither of the leading tablet OS platforms has squarely addressed the needs of IT organizations and business users,” says Dan Shey, ABI’s Enterprise Mobility Practice Director. With that in mind, “flawless execution” by Microsoft on this front would “catapult it into a mobile computing leadership position,” he says.
Big Tent Entertainment has inked a licensing agreement with Bare Tree Media to launch a new Domo Photo Bomb app for iOS devices. Domo is Japanese public broadcaster NHK’s mascot, who has gone viral over the last decade, appearing in a large number of user-generated content online as well as on a wide number of apparel and gear from licensed retailers. This photo-sharing app offers a selection of free Domo images, along with the ability to upgrade to access premium images, which users can pair with a personalized message and then share their creation across Facebook, Twitter, and email.

Klondike has teamed with Paramount Digital Entertainment and GorillaSpot Media to allow users to find, personalize, and share movie clips with friends on multiple social networks. An extension of the Unilever brand’s “Moments of Glory” campaign, the Facebook app, which retains the same name as the campaign, features roughly 150 clips from popular titles in the Paramount Pictures library, including The Godfather, Forrest Gump, Tommy Boy, and Wayne’s World. Once a clip has been selected, users can add music and a personal message in order to create a custom video card, a “Moment of Glory” if you will, that can be shared across Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and via email. The app, which is built on the back of GorillaSpot’s ReelCards on Facebook app, also allows users to buy and watch full-length films from Paramount.
