Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, August 20, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Sorpresa, the US Spanish-language kid’s network, is set to launch the popular live-action Chilean tween/teen-targeted telenovelas series, Karku, on August 25 at 9p, as part of the network’s back-to-school programming. Set in Santiago, Chile, the series follows Emilia (13) and her five friends as they go to school and face the mileposts of growing up (e.g. school work, earning money, friendship).  New episodes of Karku will debut on Sorpresa every Monday through Thursday at 9p.

Nick Jr.‘s The Wonder Pets will star in the new Bollywood-themed primetime special Save The Bengal Tiger! on Monday, September 8, at 8p on Nickelodeon.  The special features noted Bollywood actress Nandita Das as the voice of the Bengal Tiger, with a score from celebrated composers Salim and Sulaiman Merchant.    Nickelodeon Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Entertainment will release The Wonder Pets!: Save The Bengal Tiger on DVD the next day, Tuesday, September 9.  To support the premiere and DVD release: an advanced screening of Save The Bengal Tiger will be available via Comcast’s VOD service from August 25; on September 8, the special, shorts and song clips from the episode and other The Wonder Pets episodes will be available via VOD on Time Warner Cable, Charter, Cablevision, Verizon Fios and Cox; from September 1, broadband service Nick Jr. Video will stream a two-minute sneak peek and song clips for the special along with other episodes; the same will be available on wireless carriers; and beginning August 13, NickJr.com will launch an interactive game The Bengal Tiger’s Bash.

4Kids Entertainment, Inc. will introduce the newest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, TMNT: Back To The Sewer (13×30), to broadcasters at Mipcom in October.  4Kids has inked a number of broadcast deals for Back To The Sewer including the most recent on with cITV (UK), which joins those already signed on including Alter (Greece), DRTV (Denmark), MTV3 (Finland), Children’s Channel via UCOI (Israel), Indosiar (Indonesia) and RTE (Ireland).  The new series will premiere on cITV in Q1 2009, as the TMNT’s 25th anniversary celebration gets under way.

Animation studio Renegade Animation (Hi Hi Puffy Amiyumi, The Mr. Men Show) will showcase its new tween/teen-aimed animated short-form series, Funny Face (25×1), this October at Mipcom/Mipcom Junior for the first time.  Fitzroy Media is handling international sales and licensing efforts for the irreverent interstitial series.  Following in the tradition of classic physical cartoons Such as Tom & Jerry and Looney Tunes, Funny Face revolves the slapstick adventures of Loud Mouth Lime, Jolly Olly Orange, Goofy Grape and their “fruit-flavored” friends. If you are thinking those character names sound familiar, well, first, you are right the characters were initially introduced on drink packets made by Pillsbury in the 1960s, think of each flavor as a fruit with a silly face.  Secondly, yeah  you’re getting old if you remember that.

iaTV, the 24/7 US Asian pop culture network, enters into a series acquisition deal and ad sales partnership with publisher/distributor Tokyopop.  Under the deal, iaTV’s ad sales team will represent the ad sales for Tokyopop’s digital assets including www.tokyopop.com, brand integration within original and user-generated video content, mobile advertising and other areas.  On the programming side, iaTV acquires a range of Tokyopop anime properties including Initial D (41×30) (Monday-Friday 5:30p and 11p PT, from September 1), Psychic Academy (8×30) (Tuesday at 10:30p PT on September 9), and the anime film Spring and Chaos (1×60) (TBD), all of which are in Japanese with English subtitles.  Also included in the pact are short-form ‘iManga’ series, three-four minute shorts based on Tokyopop’s manga series.  As always, not all manga and anime series are for all ages.

Scholastic Audio is set to launch the audiobook edition of the new K8-12-targeted ten book adventure series The 39 Clues, beginning with the first book in the series titled The Maze of Bones, from author Rick Riordan (Percy Jackson and the Olympians series), on September 9, 2008.  Narrated by David Pittu, the audiobook debuts simultaneous to Scholastic Press’ release of the print version of The Maze of Bones in the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.  Not just a book series, The 39 Clues includes multimedia elements including a series of collectible game cards (each with its own code), and an online game that allows readers to be a part of the story and compete for prizes.  Each book of the series will be penned by a noted young adult book series writer, with the second book, One False Note, by author Gordon Korman will be published December 2, 2008, followed in 2009 by the third, fourth, and fifth books, which will be written by Peter Lerangis, Jude Watson, and Patrick Carman, respectively.  Movie rights for The 39 Clues have been picked up by DreamWorks Studios, with Steven Spielberg potentially directing. Deborah Forte, President of Scholastic Media, will produce.

MARKETING/LICENSING

This week marks the launch of Cartoon Network New Media’s new Ben 10 Alien Force: Bounty Hunters, Cartoon Network’s first real-time, multiplayer, side-scrolling casual battle game for kids.  Available at www.cartoonnetwork.com, Ben 10: Alien Force Bounty Hunters allows players to don virtual jetpacks and play either individually in matches of up to eight players or in teams across three different battle settings, with options of nine weapons and four power-ups.  Gamers earn experience points while playing the game that let them advance in the games, and beginning later this year players will be able to earn Mini Match points redeemable in the recently launched Mini Match virtual world.

Galleon Holdings inks its first distribution deal in the US with Zizzle Toys, a toy manufacturer and marketer, for the animated comedy-action series Skunk fu! (52×13).  Brokered by Galleon’s North American licensing agency, The Sharpe Company, Zizzle will have the exclusive rights to distribute the Skunk fu toys line in the US.  Croco Worldwide, Galleon’s toy arm, developed the toy line.  Skunk Fu! airs in the US on both Cartoon Network and the Kids’ WB! Saturday morning block on The CW.  The series is a Cartoon Saloon, Cake Entertainment and Telegael co-production for TG4 (Ireland) and SUPER RTL (Germany), with Galleon handling all licensing and merchandising rights and Cake controlling the audiovisual exploitation rights.
