Good morning. It’s Wednesday, August 1, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
Disney Pictures has acquired the movie rights to Pet Robots, a graphic novel by Scott Christian Sava, according to Variety. The story is described as a high-tech and futuristic comedy about robots that wind up in the hands of those least likely to have them. Not yet released, Pet Robots will be published by Sava’s Blue Dream Studio. Chris Bender and JC Spink will serve as producers under their Benderspink banner.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Nickelodeon will launch the new live-action preschool music centric series Yo Gabba Gabba! (20×30) with a simulcast of the premiere episode on Nick Jr. and Noggin on Monday, August 20 at 10:30a. Nick Jr. will debut a new episode of the series each day from Tuesday-Thursday, August 21-23, 10:30a. Each episode will present simple life lessons for preschoolers, all underlined by music with a strong beat. The series includes a mix of original animation, puppets, real kids, a range of music genres, and recurring segments such as Biz’s Beat of the Day, in which Hip Hop legend Biz Markie teaches viewers how to beat-box, and singer/illustrator/composer Mark Mothersbaugh (Devo) in Mark’s Magic Pictures, a drawing segment. Additionally, each episode will include a celebrity and/or musical guest visit, beginning Elijah Wood in with the premiere episode. Other first season guests include Mya, The Shins, Sugarland, Rahzel, Tony Hawk, Laila Ali, Sean Kingston, Nikki Flores, Hector Jimenez, Smoosh, The Aquabats, The Aggrolites and Cornelius. Yo Gabba Gabba is produced by The Magic Store and Wildbrain.
Disney Channel will highlight the preschool CG animated series Higglytown Heroes the week of August 27 at 7:30a, during the Playhouse Disney block. The week concludes that Friday, August 31 with a new episode titled Calling All Heroes, at 7:30a. Actor Jeffrey Tambor guest stars as the radio announcer in the debut episode.
Planet X Television, a production unit of Planet One Ventures, Inc., is producing a national TV special featuring coverage of the all-girl action sports and empowerment festival Boardfest ’07, being at The Pier in Huntington Beach California over Labor Day Weekend, September 1-3, 2007. The Boardfest ’07 special will run on Planet X, which airs in 90 million TV households via broadcast, cable and satellite TV. Multiplatform kids service Kabillion introduces Kabillion Jr., a new preschool-targeted programming platform today, available online and on demand across Comcast systems nationwide. Initial programming offered on Kabillion Jr. includes Taffy Entertainment and EM.TV’s 3D CGI-animated series Dive Olly Dive and the animated dolphin series Flipper & Lopaka. Additional shows will join the line-up over the coming months.
Aardman Animation is set to launch its programming content on mobile operator 3’s ad-supported video service, which is operated by Rhythm NewMedia. Aardman’s line-up will include video clips from Creature Comforts, A Town Called Panic, Purple and Brown and Morph.
Retailer, American Eagle Outfitters launches its new multi-channel entertainment platform, 77Entertainment, this week with the premiere of It’s a Mall World, a 12-episode series, today. Directed by Milo Ventimiglia (Heroes). 77E will feature original and user-generated content on ae.com, in AE stores, on TV, and on web sites such as YouTube, MySpace and Facebook. MARKETING/LICENSING
Walt Disney Records releases the High School Musical 2 Soundtrack on August 14. The album features 10 original songs from the Disney Channel sequel, and a bonus track from a musical number that will be included on the DVD release later this year.
STONE SOUP
TOMY Corporation’s i-SOBOT humanoid robot has been recognized by the Guinness World Records as “the smallest humanoid robot in production.” An articulated and bipedal robot, the i-SOBOT stands 6.5 inches tall, and will be available for approximately US$350, from October 2007 and will be featured in the 2008 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records. EXECUTIVE MOVES
DreamWorks Animation has tapped theme park operation and marketing executive Joel Ward to head the new theme park and location-based entertainment for DreamWorks Animation Consumer Products. Ward is charged with developing DreamWorks Animation involvement in theme park attractions and location specific entertainment worldwide, including extending and building franchise opportunities for properties such as Shrek, Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda, among others. He will also further develop the relationship with Universal Studios. Ward will report to Kerry Phelan, Head of Worldwide Consumer Products. Previously, Ward toiled for 18-years at Universal Studios Hollywood, where he held several positions in park operations and marketing, most recently serving as VP/Brand Marketing for the Hollywood park.
MumboJumbo, a casual game developer and publisher, has acquired Hot Lava, a Russian-based casual games developer (7 Wonders game series). In addition to the strategic acquisition, former Hot Lava CEO, Matt Lichtenwalter, joins the MumboJumbo executive team as its new VP/Product Development.
