Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, August 17, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Netflix launches Just for Kids, a new section that allows members to more easily access content for kids 12 and under.  Just for Kids features pictures of popular kid-aimed characters, such as those from SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer and Phineas and Ferb, and Sesame Street, which kids can click on to get to shows/movies featuring those characters.  The section is also designed to make it easier for parents/caregivers to sift through genre headings like superheroes, princesses, dinosaurs and girl power to find shows/movies for their kids.  To make these categories, Netflix used ratings and reviews from the non-profit group Common Sense Media.  Currently, the Just for Kids area is available via the Netflix website, with similar functionality set to launch on the Wii, iPad, Xbox, Playstation and other devices over the next year.

DisneyToon Studios has begun production on Pixie Hollow Games, a new animated special that will premiere on Disney Channel this fall.  Based on the Disney Fairies franchise, the special features the voices of Brenda Song (The Suite Life On Deck), Jason Dolley (Good Lucky Charlie), Tiffany Thornton (So Random!) and Zendaya (Shake It Up) as the new fairies and sparrow man that join Tinker Bell and her friends as they participate in the Pixie Hollow Games.  The special is executive produced by John Lasseter and directed by Bradley Raymond (Tinker Bell).  The cast, Raymond and the special’s producer Helen Kalafatic will make appearances this weekend at Disney’s D23 fan expo in Anaheim.  To support the Pixie Hollow Games, the virtual world or Pixie Hollow ( ) is hosting a How Will You Train? art content now through September 6.


Cartoon Network in the US will launch season four of Star Wars: The Clone Wars with a one-hour premiere on Friday, September 16, at 8p.  The new season of creator George Lucas and Lucasfilm Animation’s CG animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars is comprised of 22 new episodes.  That Friday, September 16, also marks the debut of new episodes of several Cartoon Network and Warner Bros. Animation’s series, including new episodes of: Batman: The Brave and the Bold (6p); Young Justice (6:30p); Generator Rex (7p); Ben 10: Ultimate Alien (7:30p); and of course Star Wars: The Clone Wars (8-9p).

ION Television (US) acquires the live-action family movie Mandie and the Forgotten Christmas from Canada’s CCI Entertainment.  Based on the Mandie books by Lois Gladys Leppard, the movie is produced by Lost World Pictures.  Ion Television plans to launch the movie during the holiday 2011 season.

Sprout celebrates Food Week with special guest appearances by Iron Chef Jose Garces in a Sunshine Chef cook-off against the Chica the Chicken on Tuesday, August 23 during the network’s The Sunny Side Up Show (9a-12p).  Taped at Garces’ new restaurant JG Domestic, Chef Chica and Chef Garces went at it with the secret ingredient (it was cheese).  Chica’s recipe will be available at ( ).  Sprout will also feature cooking-based crafts, games and activities, among other things, all that week.

Australia-based Beyond Distribution will introduce the new CGI animated, multimedia preschool series Buzzy Bee & Friends at MipJunior this October in Cannes.  Based on New Zealand’s 70-year-old Buzzy Bee brand, the new series is the result of a partnership between Beyond and New Zealand-based producers Lion Rock Ventures and their Malaysian co-production partners Lemon Sky Animation.  Since its introduction as a wooden toy, Buzzy Bee has appeared on TVNZ (New Zealand) and in a live stage show, as well as at retail in categories such as apparel, books, DVDs, footwear, and furniture.  The original pilot series for the show was produced by Lion Rock and sold to TVNZ.  This new series was also commissioned by TVNZ, and is supported by MDeC the Multimedia Development Corporation of Malaysia.  Buzzy Been & Friends follows the adventures of the very positive Buzzy Bee, who hasn’t quite mastered the art of flying yet, and his pals Mary Lou and Oscar Ostrich among others, each with their own personalities.  Each episode begins with Buzzy in his radio studio taking calls from folks (including viewers) who are seeking solutions to everyday issues.

This week marks Classic Media and World Events Productions’ (WEP) release of the first seven episode of the 1980s animated TV series Voltron: Defender of the Universe on the new DVD, Voltron: The Legend Begins.  In addition to telling the whole original story of the team of space explorers, the new DVD title includes bonus content such as: Voltron 101  an introduction to Voltron; Voltron Art Slide Show  an exclusive slideshow featuring professional fan art from the new art book Voltron: United and Drawn; and Voltron Force Sizzle Reel  which offers fans a look at the new mixed CGI/2D animated series Voltron Force series set five years after the completion of the original series.  Voltron Force debuted this summer in on Nicktoons (US) and will rollout around the world this year.

Turner CN Enterprises (TCNE) is launching its new Cartoon Network Originals brands in the UK, a trend-driven licensing program for a number of Cartoon Network retro brands, including Cow and Chicken, Samurai Jack, Dexter’s Laboratory and Johnny Bravo, dating back to 1997.  TCNE has signed a number of licensing deals including Fusion Clothing for promotions in Germany, Frumo BV for a range of stationery products in Benelux, and LPP for adult apparel across CEE.  Turner will also be working with Poetic Gem on a new Cartoon Network Originals apparel line that will be available to UK retail in summer 2012. To support the UK licensing program, Cartoon Network (UK) will showcase a number of its classic titles from its library from 9pm every night, targeting young adults and student viewers.  The UK debut of Cartoon Network Originals brands comes on the heels of its Italian counterpart, which includes products designed by Rent me, a PR and events group that specializes in design.

SpongeBob SquarePants will be soaking it up at Sea World in Australia this summer as Village Roadshow Theme Parks (VRTP) and Nickelodeon partner to create the SpongeBob SquarePants parade specifically for Sea World.  The multi-year VRTP and Nickelodeon pact will also include a live stage show of Nick Jr.’s Dora the Explorer at Sea World.  Furthermore the Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. brands will be integrated into the Sea World Resort and kids’ club, where SpongeBob and Dora products will also be available, including some exclusive to Sea World.


American Greetings Properties (AGP) appoints Peter Baghdassarian as VP/Business Affairs.  Based in LA, Baghdassarian will oversee all deals related to production, co-production, and entertainment financing for The Care Bears, Strawberry Shortcake and all new productions.  He will also serve on AGP’s senior management team, to help strategic planning across all its businesses (entertainment, licensing, distribution, and new media).  Most recently, Baghdassarian toiled for eight years in business and legal affairs at Starz owned animation studios Film Roman and Starz Animation.


The Disney XD premiere of the animated TV movie Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Across the 2nd Dimension, Saturday, August 13 (10-11:45a) now stands as the top movie telecast for the network (including when it was Toon Disney) among K6-11 (698,000) and Boys 6-11 (407,000).  Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Across the 2nd Dimension improved the demos over the same Saturday last year (August 14, 2010) by +345% in K6-11 and +303% with Boys 6-11.  The TV movie made its original TV premiere on Disney Channel on Friday, August 5, 2011.
