NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
BET’s President/Entertainment, Reginald Hudlin announced that the network’s newly established animation division has inked two new deals. First up, BET has secured a three-year pact with Film Roman animation studio to produced a slate of animated films, series and multi-platform content for internet, broadband and mobile applications. BET and Film Roman also plan to co-develop and produce direct-to-DVD and theatrical releases. The terms of the three-year, non-exclusive deal also include international distribution outside of the BET Network. Secondly, BET is re-teaming with Denys Cowan, BET SVP/Animation and his former creative partner, Milestone Media co-founder Dwayne McDuffie (the folks behind Static Shock) to create a new adult targeted action/adventure series. BET is currently developing Hannibal the Conqueror series an animated project from Vin Diesel and One Race Productions.

Jinkies! Warner Bros. Online rips the mask off its all new Scooby-Doo website this week. In addition to an overall new look, the site has several new features including downloadable mystery podcasts, a social networking site for pets, long-form episodic mysteries, games, a preschool area called Scooby’s Playground, and parents guides. And no, Velma did not get a makeover. Zoinks! (www.scooby-doo.com)
Cracked magazine re-launches this week with its first issue. Targeted to adults 18-34, the humor magazine was born 48-yrs ago. So, what should we expect when you open Cracked? Glad you asked. The humor magazine has a new look, sans the well-known illustrations, and sections for headlines/headliners, news, reviews and interviews, and it’s bigger (80 pages up from 48). The first issue includes a spoof on ESPN’s magazine, an article on celebrity idiots, a periodic table of the ’80s and a variety of general humor pieces on pop culture, war and politics, as well as interviews with Rob Corddry and Ed Helms of The Daily Show and South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker. Monty Sarhan acquired Cracked in 2005, and put the magazine on hiatus for 18 months while a team redesigned and rethought what they wanted the magazine to be. Sarhan serves as the magazine’s CEO and Editor-in-Chief. The creative team includes Editor-At-Large is actor/comedian Michael Ian Black. Cracked is being distributed by Curtis Circulation, the largest distributor of magazines in North America.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE), Cartoon Network’s branding and merchandising unit, has inked a number of new deals to produce fashion related products based on two of its properties:
- CNE has partnered with Mighty Fine, a fashion design studio, in a multi-year pact to develop apparel items based on CN’s property, The Powerpuff Girls. Targeted to juniors and tweens the line launches this fall 2006 and will include knit top tops, t-shirts and fleece tops, which will feature the Girls in retro designs. Mighty Fine is the creator and licensor of popular characters including French Kitty, Ruby Gloom and Bad Cat as well as the fashion brands, Doe and Disney Couture.
- CNE has also inked license deals with SGFootwear and ODM to produce products for boys/tweens/teens based on CN’s series Ben 10. Ben 10 t-shirts will arrive in stores this fall 2006 and shoes are slated to be available in spring 2007.
Nexus Editrice, an Italy-based game publisher, has entered into a licensing agreement with Paradox Entertainment/Conan Properties to produce a strategy board game based on the adventures of Conan the Barbarian, the pulp hero warrior created by the writer Robert E. Howard. Tentatively titled Age of Conan The Strategy Board Game, the game is planned to be released in late 2007. Nexus Editrice published the popular board game War of the Ring, under license from Tolkien Enterprise/Sophisticated Games, and will release Marvel Heroes, under license from Marvel Enterprises this September 2006.
STONE SOUP
BBC Scotland has launched Wee Gems, a new talent initiative to encourage and develop directors, producers and writers in the area of kid dramas. BBC Scotland is asking for submissions of 15-minute kid targeted films, with plans to commission two that could air in the 4:35p time period on CBBC One and possibly be developed into a series. The pilots must be produced in Scotland with a Scottish-based crew. Wee Gems is open to both new and experienced Scotland-based talent. The clincher? Those who enter a film must work within the confines of an agreed production budget. Has that ever happened in the history of TV production? The deadline is Friday, September 22, 2006, for more information and applications call 0141 338 3588.
