The partnership between Yahoo! News and ABC News has given birth to two new digital-only daily shows: Beyond the Headline and Nightline Fix. The former is an extension of World News Tonight and features Diane Sawyer and her team of reporters sharing the stories behind the stories. Nightline Fix further investigates some of the reports on Nightline.
In Other Words: These two paired up in October of 2011 and have bolstered each other’s status ever since. This relationship ain’t breaking up anytime soon.
FourthWall Media and Deep Root Analytics, a Republican data company, have formed a partnership that will find Deep Root using FourthWall’s TV viewing data to target political campaign advertising in individual markets. “FourthWall licenses its data to organizations looking for sophisticated insights into their media buys,” senior vp of communications Dan Levinson tells Cynopsis. This is the first time a Republican organization is using cable set-top box viewing data like this to target program-specific commercials matched to appropriate voting sectors. FourthWall provided similar data to the Democratic Party in last year’s presidential campaign.
Netflix is closing its only DVD distribution center in Connecticut today, in the city of Bloomfield, leaving Netflix with just 42 distribution hub locations. The company’s DVD customers have dropped from 10.1 million at the end of March last year to 7.5 million at the end of June this year; revenue for DVD subscriptions has fallen from $320 million to $232 million in that time.
In Other Words: Take it as a sign of how much digital streaming is replacing actual DVDs.
TiVo and Time Warner Cable have picked up a few Emmy Awards. TWC will bring home two trophies for the categories of network DVR and video-on-demand dynamic ad insertion. TiVo won for its personalization and video search platform. But they don’t get the actual statuettes till January, so there’s plenty of time to pick out just the right tux and dress.
Creative folks who want to make it big on YouTube now have their own version of Kickstarter. New crowd funding platform TubeStart focuses on supporting people who want to create weekly short content for YouTube. Those who pay the monthly fee on the platform will have access to exclusive content from the creators involved. TubeStart also takes a cut of whatever dough creators pull in.

Two of TV’s ad biggies are becoming one. Extreme Reach, which delivers ads to about 7,000 television stations, is set to acquire DG‘s TV ad business for $485 million. DG delivers ads to about 5,900 different channels. DG will now be focused completely on online advertising using its MediaMind platform.
Broadcast Interactive Media Director of Engineering Kevin Springborn is planning to tell the Usenix Security Symposium in D.C. today that pay-per-view networks fraud cost advertisers more than $180 million annually. The study he and Paul Barford, co-founder of BIM spinoff MdotLabs, just put together, entitled Impression Fraud in On-line Advertising via Pay-Per-View Networks, lays out how the pair came up with the estimate that the number of invalid impressions generated from pay-per-view networks is around 500 million daily.
In Other Words: That’s a lot of wasted money for advertisers and chances are they’re gonna want to do something about it.
Facebook is aiming to buy the company that created a speech recognition and language translation app, Pittsburgh based Mobile Technologies.
In Other Words: Facebook is fighting back a week after Google-owned Motorola introduced its Moto X phone and its voice-recognition software to the world.
Want your MTV? Xbox Live, the online multiplayer gaming and digital media delivery service, is now serving up an MTV app that gives subscribers access to on-demand streaming of full episodes of most MTV and MTV2 shows as well as a selection of older MTV content like Laguna Beach and Beavis & Butthead. It also has a whole library of MTV shorts to choose from. “We’re always on the lookout for expanding options for how fans consume our content, allowing them the freedom to experience MTV through the platform of their choice,” Colin Helms, senior VP-connected content group at MTV, told Cynopsis Digital.
Roku and game maker Marmalade have struck a deal, which means that some popular mobile games may be coming to Roku soon. The device doesn’t have many games on it as of yet, but Roku owners might soon be playing Cut the Rope, Draw Something, Plants vs. Zombies and Sims 3.

The first episode of Doctor Who aired way back in 1963 and the brand is still going strong, having garnered a lot of attention for the recent unveiling of the actor playing the titular character in its next incarnation. To celebrate the 50th birthday, though, father and daughter filmmakers Robert and Alex Doyle have launched a new web series, Doctor Who TARDIS In Orbit Project, that features the pair putting together and launching a TARDIS (the show’s name for its phone-booth-shaped time machine) into space. The Doyles funded the project through Kickstarter, where they picked up almost three times the amount of cash they were asking for. So, enjoy it, Doctor Who fans.
