NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS FROM MIP TV 2008

It’s amazing the amount of people here, how crowded the floor is and how much business is being done.  This is how a market should be! Very meeting-centric, and if you don’t have a Stand to meet in, there is the Participants Tent where you can meet with people, pitch shows, sign deals.  You walk in there and there’s a flat screen with all of the scheduled meetings (how do they know?) and a couple dozen numbered tables.  The screen will tell you at which table your meeting will be held, which is extraordinarily helpful if you’re meeting with someone you’ve never met (I was meeting with the Italian broadcasting company CRC).  And of course, there’s always plenty of water and coffee (both large and small).  I understand there’s also a Buyer’s tent, also quite civilized and organized, only they also have booze.

Now I know this is an international congress, so it makes sense there would be plenty of people from other countries: Tokyo, Brazil, Italy, UK, India, Mexico, Germany, France (that’s an easy one), Ireland and just about every where else you can think of. (Duh … I gotta get out more!) So talking – or rather communicating – with people is always an adventure.  Tho there are some things that transcend language … I’m standing at the top of the stairs to the market yesterday waiting for my lunch date, when someone comes up to me, all bright eyed and smiling, and says Hi! How are you? like we’re old buddies.  I haven’t a clue. He says, don’t you remember me?, clearly astonished I wouldn’t remember him, and he offers his first name at which point of course  I “remember” him.  Oh sure sure, how are you, you look great, so glad to see you again, etc.  He then heads off down the stairs and the gentleman standing to my right who happened to oversee the whole thing, bursts out laughing.  He doesn’t speak English but clearly understood the exchange, and that I still had no idea who that guy was.  Maybe a memory class is a good idea …

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Two prominent media chieftains revealed a little of what keeps them up at night this week. NBCU‘s Jeff Zucker warned International Advertising Assoc. World Congress attendees how crippling an actors’ strike could be to the TV business, given the current state of the economy and “the future” on the broadcast side. (On a brighter note, NBCU’s future initiatives seem to be going well. Hulu.com‘s ad inventory is already sold out, according to Mr. Zucker, and NBC is still hopeful it can work out a flexible pricing model with Apple for content sales on iTunes.)  Disney CEO Bob Iger admitted at a Newhouse School Media Breakfast how much of a dogfight it has become in the digital news business. Without a cable network to help drive digital traffic, he said, ABCNews.com is at a disadvantage to counterparts such as CNN.com and MSNBC.com. Then there’s competition from online news entities such as Huffington Post.   Full edition: CYN DIGITAL. (Or to listen to the Cynopsis Digital Podcast click here or subscribe to it at iTunes here.)

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORYUPFRONT 2008-2009 SEASON – DISNEY CHANNEL:  At its annual ad sales upfront presentation in NYC yesterday, Disney Channel looked to The Next Big Thing and focused on finding and cultivating new talent, as well as announcing that there will be a High School Musical 4 (insert fan shrieks here) and of course its top cable standings in ratings for 2007, in primetime among Total Viewers, K6-11 and Tweens 9-14, and in Total Day among Tweens 9-14.  The small gathering of about 30 people took place at a recording studio in midtown, the network is holding a handful of presentations versus the usual bigger events, where it presented its newest young singer/actress 15-year-old Demi Lovato, who stars in Disney Channel’s upcoming original TV movies Camp Rock and Princess Protection Program.  Lovato, who performed a soulful ballad from Camp Rock, has starred in As The Bell Rings, a short-form series for the network, and is also the star of a current Disney Channel pilot.  Full edition and MIP TV Kids-related news: CYN KIDS.

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORYGermany’s ProSiebenSat.1 Group is partnering with IBM to create a pan-European digital platform in a new 10-year outsourcing deal valued at more than 200 million euros.  As part of the agreement, IBM will manage and improve ProSiebenSat.1 Produktion’s IT business applications, IT and media systems, transferring 170 of that division’s employees to IBM in 1Q2009.  IBM will also build a broadcast integration center and more in the next few years.  ProSiebenSat.1 Group will establish a new Munich-based playout center in addition to its existing center in Chiswick/London.
